walking to my car after work is scary!!!

a lot of the time @ my club, we only have one doorguy....maybe two. and on a thur/fri/sat night there are like 17 girls. so after we all check out with the manager and pay our stage fee, its already like 2:45am and im ready to GOOO. i dont have time to wait for our doorguy to walk 17 chicks to their cars. i live an hour away and im trying to get home as soon as fucking possible!! so i'll usually just tip everybody and leave. i work on broadway in SF, so its a busy street with a ton of clubs, so its not like im walking down some dark alley, but it seems like no matter what time i leave i always get harrassed...well not always, but alot. like earlier tonight, i was walking to my car and i passed by 2 other clubs and a liquor store...outside there were about 5 younger black guys...not upscale type dudes...some street/hood/from the ghetto type dudes. as they observed me walking to my car, they were asking hella questions, i.e. "what's your name? where you goin? where you work? blah blah blah" SHUT UP!!! do you not understand that it is 1:30 am, im a female, there is nobody else really outside and you are a group of young ghetto looking individuals? i know that you are fully aware that i am a stripper (im carrying a big duffle bag and have on a TON of makeup) and you probably think i am holding hundreds if not thousands of dollars somewhere on my person. its a WEE bit scary for you to be following me to my car!! why don't guys understand why we are in such a hurry to leave after work. do they think its in our best interest to hang around in the middle of the night with a bunch of cash on us and no security?? come on guys, get a clue!!

When I leave, I always wear my hair in a ponytail, remove my makeup and dress in unattractive clothes. I know it's dumb but I really think it helps.

Can you tip slightly more and have first dibs on him walking you to your car at the end of the night? I understand being exhausted and over it at the end of a shift, and I can't imagine having to drive an hour and then take a shower and take the makeup off etc. However, I'd wait for him to walk you to your car. You have no idea on which day you might be caught in an ungodly scary or dangerous situation after work.

After being held at gunpoint myself, I can tell you that I now do not trust any situation or person. You can say that you don't trust anyone, but you're willing to walk to your car unescorted... so you must think that it won't happen to you. You think it might, but you also think it won't. Making sense?

It's not worth taking the chance. I lucked out and ended up not dead.

You are in denial. If someone wants to do you harm, they're not picking you out as a target based on your level of attractiveness. You're just as vulnerable whether you feel like it or not. If you have something that someone decides they want to take from you, and they think they can get it with little or no consequence... does makeup matter? It might fend off the flirts. Maybe. Maybe. But if the issue is safety, and I believe it is, then we need to wake the f*** up.

I'm not in denial. I realize that I am vulnerable no matter what I wear but truth is, I do feel safer when I am not very "noticeable". When I'm in a dangerous situation in a group, for example the one time this bus I was on had a man on there to cause trouble, I immediately try and make myself as unnoticeable as possible. I truly believe that the more you stand out, the more likely you will become victim of an attack whether you stand out in your fancy hairstyle, bright colours, or standing apart from a crowd.

And the difference between an annoying flirty asshole and a rapist can be just a few beers........

Please reread my post. I'm not saying that if you don't wear flashy clothes or makeup you are safe. I'm NOT saying that at all. What I am saying is that you are a teensy bit more safe. Bad things can and will happen no matter what you do. We can only reduce the chances and maximize our safety.

I think that guy who beat you up and took your money did a number on you. Can't blame you. Maybe you shouldn't work at this club as often if the security is so shitty? I mean, even the thing in the pr should've NEVER happened. They should've been on him like brown on rice. Now this shit? Oh mannnnnn, I hope you ARE making hundres of thousands in a night, 'cos that's baout the only thing that would make up for all the scariness at your club. Take care of yourself, miss!

yeah but at least you take out the stripper quotient and you're less of a target for robbery.

OP, do you have pepper spray that you carry in your hand?
do you park near another girl? Can you carpool with a girl who lives on your way to work?

this is serious, so unless you're going to get a pit bull, bring it to work everyday, leave it with the bouncer and then try to use him as a deterrent on your way home-- don't walk by yourself.

worst case scenario. have a phone buddy (though realize that you need to work extra hard in this case to be aware of what's going on around you) who knows exactly where you are and exactly who's around you.

I'd go with tipping more to try and get walked out first. I drive over an hour home so I know hoe badly you just want to get the f*** out and get home, but its not worth your safety. There are a lot of sick assholes out there and at that point they're all drunk so it's even worse. If you really need to get out of there at least carry mace or something, or pretend to be on the phone (or be on the phone if you can) and say things like "yeah I'm on my way to my car right now, should be home in 20 minutes ect."

But honestly, wouldn't you rather get home later then never get home because somebody beats you up and robs you or worse? Not to be scary or anything but you gotta take care of yourself!

I hate guys like that. They have no frickin' clue that they're being scary (and it's scary even if you're NOT just leaving the club).

Girl, alls I can say is I feel you!! When I worked at Hungry I it was the same thing. Scary as shit!! Most of the time I was wasted, too...no way I could tolorate that ghetto bullshit when I was sober. I have no advice...maybe switch to a larger club with more security? Or find a girl who is parked nnear where you are and stand in he check out line together and walk together?

Where I'm at now we always, always, always have enough guys on to walk us out, weather it's down the street a few blocks or just to one of the little lots on Broadway.

    Stay safe!!

A ponytail make it easier for a guy to grab you by your hair. I've read more than one safety website where one of the things attackers/rapists look for is someone with a ponytail...maybe a beanie would be slightly better. It's more the time of night, however, that is most dangerous. Attacks tend to happen between 11pm and 6am.Women doing an early morning jog/walk in the am or exiting/entering a parking lot/parking garage of a nightclub,sc, grocery store, etc are most at risk, regardless of clothing, hairstyle(to an extent), etc...Having a cell phone handy is good but be careful about being too involved in a conversation and losing awareness of your surroundings in a dark or poorly lit area. I've been wanting to get a LOUD personal alarm, myself. We have bouncers walk us to our cars, this is mandatory. However, when Im out at night or parking on the street somewhere at night I have a 'safe' friend to call who I havea code word I'd use if I feel unsafe and what they should do if the call is dropped and I dont call back within 2 minutes. Be careful, ladies!

I'm not scared at work because I always get walked out (and lately my bf has been driving me because I don't wanna leave my car in the club parking lot). But I used to get hella terrified going from my car to my apartment after work. Like if someone turned off the main street by my apartment after me, I'd circle around until they drove off. I would NEVER park in my spot unless there's no one around. Even if someone was in the parking lot at the apartments across the street. No one would ever want to rape me or kidnapp me, but I'm still the biggest chicken.

Why do you have to walk by two other clubs and a liquor store before you get to your car, there's no closer parking? That is way too dangerous. I've always parked valet or gotten walked to my car. If you can't do that, is there a group of a couple girls you can walk with? Predators usually pick single victims, so try to stick with somebody if you have to walk that far.
