They're not "hackers" per se. They're basement-dwelling gamers on the /b/ board of 4chan.org

They've had threads up about that for days now. I'm often on there.

But still, they're doing something pretty awesome.

But then I neither live in a basement nor am I a gamer...

Woh... They should watch out when they f*ck with scientologists. They love to sue and have plenty of funds for going to court plus an army of lawyers.

Hackers did wage a successful attack on the country of Latvia last year. I suppose attacking religious organization's computer servers would be easy compared to shutting down an entire sovereign nation's computer servers.

OKay, I've been following this and I know a couple of people involved. Not personally, since they are "Anonymous", but well-enough to know how all this got started.

It all started as a joke, from what I've gathered.

A few of them were chatting online and decided, as a lark, to pick on a particularly weird and stupid religious cult that has a large internet presence. With the release of the Tom Cruise video, the Church of Scientology was chosen. IMHO if the Moonies or Hare Krishnas were the top news topic at the time, they would have been picked. But, they weren't. The Scientologists were and continue to be the top news-getting cult. It was started as a way to amuse themselves, to get "LULZ" or laughs.

However, upon closer examination of the Scientologists, they discovered a truely dark side to the Church. The Church carried-out the largest infiltration of the US Government when they sent people into the IRS to tamper with government records and tap into the private information of people whom the Church considers their enemies. Top officials in the Church were convicted and imprisoned for this and L. Ron HUbbard lived on the run from the Feds for the rest of his life.

The Church as a long history of vexatious litigation. Sueing people for speaking-out against them. Releasing copies of the Church's religious texts can get you sued. Even though they are a religious group, they have copyrights on all their books. So, if you post a scanned image of their books on the internet, they can and will sue you for it. There have been smear campaigns against the Church's enemies and invasions of people's homes and private lives.

I could go on and these a just a few examples of why Anonymous is going after the Church. But, it would take-up a lot of space and a lot of my time to type it all out.

Basically, Anonymous took a good look at the Church of Scientology and decided that it needed to be destroyed, not just harassed. Plus, it might result in some LULZ for them.

From what I've seen, Anonymous has been very open about what they want to do. They have no problem with people practising Scientology or any other religion. It's just the Church's leadership that hey have a problem with and they think it has to stop and that people around the world should be made aware of exactly what the Church has been doing and is doing in the USA and around the world.

If somebody wants to be a Scientologist, be my guest. I'm all in favor of people believing and worshipping how they want. But, I've got serious issues with people who try to infiltrate government offices, run smear campaigns against their opponents, sue people for speaking-out against them, etc.

So, what began as a joke has developed into a worldwide campaign. There are planned demonstrations against the Church of Scientology around the world on February 10th involving people from all walks of life, from hackers to housewives.

The problem with getting information about Anonymous is that it is anonymous. There are no clubhouses or established membership lists anywhere. Anyone can simply claim to be Anonymous if they agree with what they are trying to accomplish. Some people who claim to be part of Anonymous are just a bunch of stupid kids who do more harm than good, so Anonymous has problems of their own internally.

Yes, Anonymous can be scarey. But, I've found a few people in it who seem to have their act together and are staying on-target for the tenth of February. It is anyone's guess how this will all turnout. Here is the most common slogan Anonymous uses:

"Be wary of the tenth of February.
    Anymous is everywhere and nowhere.
Anonymous is everyone and no one.
Anonymous is united as one and divided by zero.
    Anonymous does not forgive.
    Anonymous does not forget.
    Expect us."

I can't wait until February 10 to see how it all turns-out.

If you've been paying attention, you might know that it went well. There was another protest on March 15, and yet another on April 12. All worldwide, with (by our estimates) about 15-20 thousand people protesting, total.

There was some media coverage, but not as much as we would have liked. That could change in the next week or so, though.

There's another major worldwide protest happening on May 10. This will be the biggest one yet. Chances are, there's going to be something happening near your area.

Here's the best part. You're invited. Everyone is.

Drop by Xenu(dot)net and see what's going on. Find out why we protest against the "Church" of Scientology. Find out what we're doing to stop it. Find out why we wear masks.

We are Anonymous. We hate evil cults. We love cake and strippers.

How many protest groups come right out and say that?

There've been two protests in my area alone.

Except my friend keeps posting pictures on her LJ of her and her friends in the protest and saying 'this is me an xxx xxx xxx'... so I didn't participate because she would've ruined it.

Yeah, that would kind of defeat the purpose.
