    Default Breast implants: Capsular contracture

I am considering getting my boobs redone in the near future and I like to take care of my body so I have done a great deal of research on breast augmentation. I have found a great doctor, chosen what size, etc. etc., but my biggest concern was capsular contracture.

The general consensus seems to be: doctors don't know what causes it and there's not much we can do about it. However they DO know that smokers have an increased risk of capsular contracture and many doctors suggest that patients take a vitamin E supplement during recovery.

I have done SO much research on this I can't cite all the articles and studies properly, but if you research them yourself I think you will find the same information.

One thing some doctors have noticed is that there is a lower rate of capsular contracture in breast augmentation patients who have asthma and are taking a prescription called papaverine. It is a smooth muscle relaxer allows blood to flow more freely through the blood vessels. Papaverine also reduces capsular contracture once it has started to form. Its a vasodilator. (Vitamin E is also a vasodilator, might I add.)

Basically capsular contracture is caused when capsules of tightly-woven collagen fibers normally form as an immune response around a foreign body (eg. breast implants, pacemakers, orthopedic joint prosthetics), tending to wall it off. It create a pocket of blood around the implant (hematoma.) My conclusion is that capsular contracture is related to vasopression/ blood circulation.

SO, IT IS MY HYPOTHESIS THAT CAPSULAR CONTRACTER CAN BE REDUCED AND TREATED BY AVOIDING VASOCONSTRICTERS AND CONSUMING VASODILATORS (in moderate amounts.)

This is why I don't think this information is widely known or published:
    1. Because there haven't been enough conclusive studies published, and
    2. Plastic surgeons don't benefit from spending gazillions of dollars on research because they gain more business from capsular contracture patients.

Here are some vasoconstricters (things to AVOID) from wikipedia:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasoconstriction
including amphetamines, antihistamines, caffeine, decongestants and stimulants

Supplements that IMPROVE blood circulation include vitamin E, grapeseed extract, fish oil capsules, and garlic.

So, for all of my girlies on stripperweb and any of your friends that are getting their boobs done, I hope this information is of some help to you. good luck.

    LO

I have mine done and of course I was worried about this too. However, if you massage them daily it is a big preventative towards CC. That keeps the pocket open.

^^^^Yep. Massage, massage, massage!! My PS had me doing it at least 4 times per day, in addition to taking vitamin E supplements. It hurts like hell in the first few weeks, but keeping the blood flowing and the tissue moving helps to prevent the build-up of scar tissue and CC.

5 years later, I still take the vitamin E and massage my breasts. You can't be too careful!

Wait! Not so fast! Increase the vitamin E and others AFTER you have your boobs. Cut back now, before the surgery to reduce bleeding, swelling and bruising. The very thing that prevents capsular contracture can cause complications during surgery.

Before surgery, avoid blood thinners like vitamin E, aspirin, and ibuprofen. To reduce swelling and speed healing take bromelain and eat a decent amount of protein, amino acids and monounsaturated fats.

Omg most definitely. You don't want to be on anything that reduces your clot ability. No alcohol either.

I had BA in 2004, with salines b/c that's all they offered at that time and boy am I pissed that now you can get silicone , and my surgeon said (because I asked) that massage makes no difference as far as CC is concerned, because that was my big worry too. Nobody wants to look like they have gym socks under their skin. So anyway I did no massage. No particular supplements. I wore my support bra (even in the shower) & did no strenuous activity. Not hard, I'm extraordinarily lazy. My breasts still look, by all accounts, perfectly natural. Now, I did have a baby after BA, and one before too, but I think it might not hurt to rub your new boobs (gently, at first, they will feel like alien boobs but that changes) and take vitamin E but don't go nuts & worry too much. Boobs will more than likely look great. If you have a good dr and something goes wrong, which is statistically rare, he/she will work with you. Happy boobs!

    THIS.

My physician has my massaging as well. Proper massaging really, really reduces your likelyhood of developing CC. Another thing is to get the implants placed under the muscle.

Keep the pocket soft, and it's very unlikely you will develope CC. In theory you still can, but my physician said is was unlikely. His CC rate is 0.
    But do those massages!!!!

Every surgeon is different. But research has indicated that massaging and Vitamin E really do make a difference.

I'm thinking that the difference has to do with whether your skin is virginal (i.e., not been expanded via pregnancy and some breastfeeding) or has a bit more 'stretch' built in, like in my case. Immune system response probably also plays into it. I've never read or heard about anybody adversely affecting their implants by moderate massage (sorry, must qualify: I am a certified massage therapist. Moderate means the edge of pain. Till you feel it, but no harder).
There's a lot of swelling post-surgery, go easy for longer than you think you need to.

I have CC in my right boob. I took vitamin E and massaged. It couldn't be helped. Both boobs look the same, they just feel different. CC really is not that a big of deal to me, but I truly hated my old small boobies.

    I was never told anything about having to massage mine by my surgeon, although I'd read lots about it and it seemed the majority of people are advised to massage;
I got textured implants and heard that you are not meant to massage these as it can prevent the adhesion of the implant to the pocket/tissues...

Anyway I am 90percent sure I have a fairly mild case of CC in my right boob, from the minute I woke up after the op to this day it was more painful, took longer to drop, firmer than the other(only slightly, I notice it though) and I can feel the edges of the implant are kind of firmer now too(10 months later),

It's hard to say if it is getting worse or not, sometimes it is a constant awareness of a very mild achey feeling, sometimes nothing, sometimes but not as much anymore, sharper pains...

I really wish I had got unders, maybe that would have helped, I have little tissue and quite a bony chest and although I think my surgeon did a good job, he kind of talked up going over because of me being athletic, distortion of pecs etc, but I know they would look better and more natural under too, I am only 80percent happy with them and that's not good enough for all that money.

Welcome. I did a LOT of research, and yes I did get my boobs re-done in January with no complications. Good luck with everything.
