    Default Life after Humans

If anyone out there has the chance to watch this on the History channel I recommend it. It is an amazing show about what would happen to the world if human life disappeared off the planet suddenly..starting with what would happen to house pets left behind to what hundreds of years of no human life would do to the planet.

Makes you appreciate how small we really are and puts the things we see as SO important(like money) in serious perspective.

With all the people crying about how humans have destroyed the earth and taken it the point of no return...science shows how if we werent here, nature would reclaim the earth in a biological nanosecond.

They show a town near Chernobyl in the Ukraine where people(over 50 thousand) were evacuated overnight 20 years ago. Just now have the radiation levels dropped enough for humans to begin to safely return and it is EERIE. Everything is exactly the same as it was when it was suddenly left 20 years ago...except that nature(even with incredible radiation levels) has taken it over...buildings crumbling, wildlife flourishing, etc...

    Again...highly recommended!

Yeah, but seeing as how we're probably going to be here for a while, what does it matter what would happen if we weren't here. Just because the earth would heal if we weren't here doesn't erase the things we're doing while we're presently here.

But the point is we havent DESTROYED the Earth irrevocably. Humans will not last forever..in fact, when you look at things on a universal evelutionary timeline..human existance in its entirety will barely register as a blip. We dont have much time left as a species when you look at it that way and nothing we are doing, while it may be making the Earth worse NOW and may speed up making it uninhabitable for human life, will actually destroy the planet itself.

I just found it very interesting to see what scientists speculate the earth will be like when we are gone.

I wish I had seen this show. I've never gotten to see a documentary on that subject and it's always interested me. I still feel bad for everything that's been destroyed/is beying destroyed so far.

Look for it, I'm sure they will run it again. They also have it on DVD from the History channel..they ran an ad for it

That was the inspiring thing..everything we are screwing up repairs itself and thrives when we get our destructive asses out of the picture

Well...the ones who are able to break free of the homes slowly turn feral...the small dogs would be the first to die out along with breeds we created with defects(cats and dogs with squished faces and squat legs...).

Cats would pretty much rule everything...it was cool to watch it happen!

Such a rip-off of Alan Weisman's "The World Without Us" but I wanted to watch it nonetheless. The History Channel is one of the last reasons I have cable.

Cameron, definitely pick up Weisman's book. It goes into so much detail about nearly every part of the world, it's absolutely amazing.

It's really sad to see what we've done to the world and how much better off it would be without us.

Is it related with the recent Alan Weisman book The World Without Us? Appears there is a lot in common.

Nothing is guaranteed. It is possible for a unique virus/disease to quickly kill us off. Just look at what AIDS is doing to Africa. Another virus slightly more damaging that AIDS and we might all be gone in 100 years.

My only gripe with the The World Without Us was I was expecting to hear more about what the world would be like without US, as in modern western society. Yes, the topic is talked about but not quite enough. More elaborate descriptions of how our infrastructure all over would fail, not just NYC. An interesting related book is Collapse by Jared Diamond. The two make a good tandem read.

    I missed this proggy, dammit.

Hey HardCandee, did Weisman have anything to do with this? I figured he'd be one of the talking heads on the show.

I started watching it and got bored I know the point and it's a good one but I'd rather spend my time worrying about right now than fretting about the fact that if all that happens my dog will be left without me
