    Default quitting a jeaaarb

Oh man. I started at my current job about 2.5 weeks ago. It's only 2 days a week and not enough hours.

I just applied for another job which is full time and super awesome. I sent in my resume last night and they just wrote to me asking for an interview asap. This bodes well for me.

However! I've never had to quit a job before that did not involve high heels and alcohol! What is the protocol! This is a very tiny company (4 employees. Actually I think I might be the only employee and everyone else is an independent contractor). I feel bad, but I really want the job I'm interviewing for. There is no HR for this job just the owner.

If the job interview goes well and they ask me the soonest I can start, what do I say? How much advance warning do I need to give my current boss? Should I try to help her find a replacement or would that be patronizing? (She actually advertised on the portland livejournal, which is how I found out about the job.) I'm a scared!

Good for you! Its really hard making the transition from stripping to a full time job. Technically you're supposed to give 2 weeks notice, but it might be a little different for you since you just started. They might let you go as soon as you tell them. Otherwise, given the circumstances I would probably give 1 week notice.

On your application for the new job, write "7 days as of notice." That means 7 days from the date they tell you that you're hired.

Take care of you first. It might suck for her for a minute, but she'll deal and find someone else. Try to be as accomodating as you can without screwing yourself over..just because it's never a good idea to burn bridges in buisness unless you have to.

And high five on the Homestar Runner referance!! JJeeooorrrbbbb.....

If the job you don't like is only 2 days a week with not long hours then what I would do is tell the job you don't like ASAP that you have found a better job. Do you have a schedule? Just tell them you will finish out your schedule so you don't leave them hanging and they can find someone else. A lot of places still do like a 2 week notice and if that wouldn't interfere with the other job I would probably do that.

Just tell the new job you are working somewhere else but that it is only a couple days a week and you are quiting that job. See if they will work around those 2 days a week until you finish up your notice.

If not that, well this is what I have always been told in situations like this. It is your life, if this new job is a lot better than just go for it, it isn't worth losing something that is a lot better.

Ah! I wonder how. Should I email her? Other than today I'm just coming in on Wednesday, when I'm supposed to get my first paycheck. I'm hoping that she just forgets to pay me so I have a really good excuse. Well I think that after the job interview tomorrow I'll know if I have the job or not (I'm prepared to ask them at the end of the interview if I'm getting it), so by Wednesday I'll know if I should quit or not. But I'm scared of doing it in person!!!!!!!!!

Man, I SO hope I get this new job. I'm super qualified and their headquarters are only ten blocks from my house!

Nah, ya gotta do it in person. This way you don't burn down any bridges. Believe me, any sane business person is going to understand why. We are all in this to make money and a safe financial future for ourselves.

I have quit many jobs and am still friends with many of them.

If you explain to your employer why you are leaving (more hours, better pay, shorter commute), she will certainly understand and may even waive the two weeks' notice. It's a job, nor a marriage. Thank her for giving you your start, and part friends.
