Default Do it yourself home projects

I'm getting into this stuff lately. I've had this house for 3 years and never tried DIY projects, but I have free labor (boyfriend) now, so we're going at it....I'm pretty psyched about how it's turning out.

first was the floor (italian ceramic with slate mosaic border)
    end

And since I now own a wet saw, I decided to go for the backsplash in 3 x 6 multicolor slate.

in progress....I think this is going to look awesome with my stainless steel appliances and black granite counters.

That floor looks fantastic! I love seeing these before-and-after shots of other people's hard work...I can't even commit to caring for a cherry tomato plant, let alone hardcore DIY stuff. But serious kudos to you and other crafty craftspeople!

Wow looks cool! You guys did a great job. The floor looks very unique. I can't wait to do that to a house of mine one day.

Hey Emily, we're doing a bunch of DIY home improvement projects and I'm looking forward to tiling... If you don't mind, I might PM you with questions in a couple of months since your floors turned out FABULOUS!!!

I'm not really a great source for asking questions. I learned everything from the web, but I will say that the tile forum I found is the bomb!

    http://www.johnbridge.com/vbulletin/....php?forumid=1

I got lots of great ideas from it. It's why I did that pattern with diamonds surrounded by squares (it makes the space look bigger) and why I'm doing slate. Slate is basically the latest trend and people love seeing it. I think I want to do it in my bathroom too after seeing some of their photos.

Thanks for the compliments too. I'm so proud of it. I did have free labor, but the patterns and material choices were all mine.

Holy shit! You're so cool. That is quite an accomplishment, worthy of reality TV.

LOL I love the pic with your dog's head in it! You did a fantastic job! Super impressed. Can't wait to see what else you do.
I want to redo my bathroom if my aunt lets me (she owns the apartment) but I think I am in love with that slate and granite look too. I want the shower/bath to look like some rainforest waterfall or something. I am just itching to paint all the walls too.
All of these things are not only fun projects but they add value to your house. Smart investment, but I wouldn't expect anything different from you!

I think a nice island would look great in the middle and really add to the cooking space. Are you going to add one?

I should say that to the boyfriend so he'll give me this "you've got to be fucking kidding" look. I drive him crazy during these projects because I get anal about it looking perfect and I tend to micromanage.

But no island. The kitchen really isn't big enough, imo.

It's hard to tell from the angle, I supposed it could be a little cramped in there with an island. You could go with a small butcher block type roller island though. To me it almost looks like you have an empty spot that needs to be filled. Could be the angle though.

updates! I'm really happy with the way it turned out. The tiles look like they change brightness, but that's the lighting.

I've dubbed the backsplash the Root Beer Memorial wall since he passed away during the making of it.

I've obviously got to get rid of the hot pink espresso machine.
