Cardio is necessary for good cardiovascular health. As far as its importance in your appearance I would say that 20 min at least three times a week is pretty necessary, unless your diet is super super clean, and then you might be able to get away with not doing cardio and just doing strength training.

Hate to say it honey......you had some extreme cardio goals (based on other thread). No wonder you're burnt out, I would be too.

They say that resistance training burns more calories than cardio because of the lean muscle you are building.

Here is what I recommend, per my trainer: employ resistance training sets that employ a total body workout. Ie, larger muscle groups AND your core. Have a short, purely aerobic warmup/cooldown, and do something aerobic between sets.
Here is some of what we did today:
    1.Warmup: jog treadmill 5 minutes....
    2.Abs/core stuff. For example:

    http://www.shapefit.com/abs-exercise...-crunches.html
    http://www.shapefit.com/abs-exercise...eg-raises.html
    http://www.shapefit.com/abs-exercise...-pull-ins.html
    Above is my favorite!

    3. Jog a lap around the gym

    4. Repeat core workout

    5. Jog lap

    6. Optional repeat core, or move to total body.

    7. Legs with tot. body. Heavy weight till exhaustion (usually 12-15 reps)
    http://www.shapefit.com/butt-exercis...ng-lunges.html
    http://www.shapefit.com/butt-exercises-plie-squats.html
    http://www.shapefit.com/quadriceps-e...-step-ups.html
    Above is fucking killer!
    http://www.shapefit.com/quadriceps-e...ll-squats.html
    http://www.shapefit.com/quadriceps-e...mp-squats.html
Above can also be done as lunges

    8. Jog lap
    9. Repeat
    10. Run Lap
    11. Repeat if time
    12. Jog lap, walk lap

I was totally out of breath and heart rate was way up after this today. I hope it was helpful. I have some options for upper body too if you would like.

I also recommend a trainer to help you master some of these routines. The reason I say so is that I had been doing some of them incorrectly for years, and injured myself repeatedly.

I don't do much cardio, but I also do very heavy weight lifting for at least 2 hours a day, 6 days a week. It works for me. My body is in good shape. However, I do walk a lot. If you're tired of sweaty, heart pounding cardio, walk. It's one of the best things you can do for your body.

I thought you were a professional dancer. I think that's cardio enough if you do it a few times a week, right?

You may be softer but the same weight if you've replaced some lean tissue with fat. You'll start toning up again relatively quickly if you find an effective routine you can stick to, though. Maybe daily cardio isn't for you, and it probably isn't even necessary if you do enough of it in any given week. Try and find a form of cardio you like and begin doing it two or three times a week, with strength training on other days. If you still find yourself loathing it, switch to something that isn't cardio, like walking at a moderate pace. You might find yourself wanting to up the intensity naturally after a while anyway, since walking can become such an enjoyable habit. I wound up becoming a runner from walking alone.

May I ask what cardio you've been doing? I may have suggestions for activities you might find to be much more pleasurable than the routine you've come to hate. If you've just been sweating it out on gym equipment, it's really unsurprising that you're bored with the whole process. Classes are a lot more enjoyable, and you can mix and match as much as you like. Boxing is awesome fun and a great workout, for instance. You might find a boxing circuit class that's convenient. Aqua aerobics is fun, too- it feels like dancing in the water. There are so many activities out there. You just need to try new things until you find the ones that give you pleasure as well as a workout. And don't push yourself hard daily unless you actually enjoy doing that. It's obviously made cardio become a hated chore for you and has led to your burning out. Begin slowly to moderately. You can always increase it if you want to.

WOW, y'all have given some amazing advice. I think I have a good idea of what to do, but I'm always down for more advice.

P.R.P.- I'm done with dancing right now. I will have to sit out next season, 'cos I can't work my first year of law school. I'll go back 2nd year, though, wherever I'm at, if I make it.

fliackd- right now I just run on my treadmill. it's all I've done for the past freaking year. I don't like working out in front of people, though. any suggestions?

ps- I'm thinking of just dancing at the studio next door, but their advanced classes are kinda lame. it's SOMETHING, though.

Treadmills are horribly boring. Do you enjoy the act of running per se? If you do, try finding some scenic outdoor routes. Try and run on grass rather than pavement to reduce the impact on your knees. If you're tired of running, you might enjoy bike rides around the neighbourhood or anywhere else. Hiking is also good fun, especially if you go somewhere lush. There's also the option of exercise DVDs- I believe Carmen Electra has released a pole dancing one.

Would you feel as though you were working out in front of people if you took up a sport in a group on a beginner's level, say a martial art like karate or some amateur boxing?

I know exactly what you mean. Currently I'm away from my gym (only another 3 weeks) so I just have access to a treadmill and exercise bike and I am so bored and dreading cardio.
I know you said that you don't like to work out in front of anybody but what about Tae Bo or Spin classes? I love these classes and I always get a good workout and 45-60 minutes always feels like 10. Lots of gyms too do their spin classes in a dark room, which is good because you can push yourself or go at your own pace without worrying what everybody else is thinking.

I havent been to the gym in soooo long I moved away from my gym and then kept getting sick for a month. Ive only gained like 4 pounds, but I know what you mean about being the same weight and looking pudgy. I've lost most of my muscle and my definition. I love cardio but its so so so ahrd to get back into it. Good Luck.

why dont you try different things? mix it up and you wont hate it so much maybe.. like one day run, one day do something else. i personally like cardio yoga, and though its not the same as doing a typical cardio workout, it mixes cardio with strength exercises and thats great!

and try the workouts on demand if you have comcast. if not, rent some workout dvds from blockbuster.

I'm totally with you! I need to get back in there, but I just haven't been feeling it... at ALL! I'd rather skip lunch (although I know how bad that is) than do cardio.

How does cardio yoga work? I've never heard of it but it sounds good.

Get a jump rope. It's easy, you can do it at home, you don't have to watch a work out dvd/video. It burns calories, tones legs like crazy, and improves bone density which is good for the future.

I hate going to the gym doing the same crap over and over so I go on hikes with my dogs. It's an activity and it's a work out for me and them. Different trails, different days never gets boring!

I am the same way with fast pace cardio like running and jogging. But i realized that walking helps which i try and do everyday. Two other dancers live by walking everyday for 30 min or more and thats all they do with great results.

I, too, hate cardio. When I was dancing, I just did strength training + 5-20 minutes of cardio, often just 5 minutes. I don't know why, but even five minutes seemed to keep me slimmer and fitter, if I did it directly after strength training.

I sympathize with the difficulty. I'm also struggling to find a routine that works for me to lose fat here. (I have about two months before I get back to the States, and I'm not in shape for dancing yet, though the last couple weeks have made a little difference...) I don't have a gym available to me. I do wind up climbing up and down three flights of stairs, 1-3 times daily, which I suppose is good. Sometimes with heavy bags of groceries. I've been doing "grocery lifts" for my biceps. I've also been trying to work it with squats and pushups and situps, but I'm worried about plateauing.

Jump rope is a GOOD suggestion. Do I even remember how to jump rope? Guess I'll find out... =)
