    Default Computer question

Does anyone out there use a Macbook laptop, and or Firefox web browser? My problem is that I keep getting logged off the internet "due to inactivity". By the time I read through a page of threads and try to write an intelligently worded reply, it's already cutting me off. Seriously, if I'm not constantly linking around to different pages, my computer closes the connection in a matter of minutes. My wife who uses the same phone lines (I know, crappy old dial-up. ) and the same server for access has no problem staying connected for hours at a time on her PC using windows explorer. So I know it's not the server cutting me off, it's my own damn computer.

What settings can I change to help prevent this?

I poked around and found this discussion on Apple's site.

I don't have my Mac at work (and haven't used a modem in years) so I don't know exactly what settings you'll find or need. But this should get you to the right area for the setting you're looking for:

Go to the Apple Menu -> System Preferences -> Network and click on the "Modem" tab. Poke around for an "inactivity" setting.

I'm totally doing this from memory, so apologies in advance if I'm off-base.

    Lunar,
You are the man! I asked this question to a tech assistant at my local Mac store during one of my personal training sessions, and he couldn't figure it out. A few minutes spent poking around with your suggestions and I think I may have fixed it. There was a time out setting which was set at 10 minutes before disconnect. WTF!?! I changed it to 90 minutes. We'll see how it goes. Thanks for the insight.

I use an iBookG4 and Firefox.

Are you visiting the same websites as your wife? Stripperweb logs you off if it has been a long time since you posted anything. It's happened to me lots of times when I've been typing a long post, opening windows and going elsewhere on the web for info, then coming back to my post. I've learned to copy my post before refreshing that page and logging in.

If you can get rid of the dialup connection and get a high speed connection, you will appreciate the web a lot more.

If my wife actually does start working in a club and our money situation eases up a bit, high speed internet will be near the top of our to-do list. She does work as a realtor which often involves a lot of web time with listings, emails, etc. and she is constantly pissed at how slow dial up is. More and more I feel like the amish of the internet. I never bother clicking on what seem like interesting youtube links because I know I don't have the time or the patience to wait for even a short clip to load. GRRR. We called AT&T once to get a quote for bundled services. They said cable is not available in my area. I know that's BS though, because my neighbor has high speed cable and it passes OVER MY DRIVEWAY to get to his house!

Oh, here's another thought. . . Our driveway is really long. Would we have to pay a lot extra to have them run it back to our house, or does the cable provider eat that cost in order to get us hooked up and paying monthly bills?

(P.S. I normally would have been logged off by now after reading this thread and writing this reply. I'm still on, so I think the problem is solved. Thanks again Lunar.)

You are welcome! I'm glad I could help.

And I totally feel your pain about dial-up. I will never, ever, never-ever go back to dial-up for anything. Hope you can get some decent bandwidth soon...

If your wife is a realtor and uses the Internet, you can take your service fees off the top as a business expense.

On the AT&T/cable question: they are not the same service. The telephone connection very well might not be available where you live because you must be less than a certain distance from a switching station. I can't get it for that reason.

Cable Internet (which is what I have) is available anywhere there is cable TV. Call yor cable provider and ask about it. It can be as fast as a T1 connection, but the more of your neighbors who are online at the same time you are, the slower it gets. It is still faster than dialup, you have the phone free while you are online, and you never get bumped off by someone picking up the phone or by call waiting.

I doubt if the length of your driveway is a factor in the installation fee. They would be having to measure the length of everyone's cable and charge everyone a different fee. I suspect a flat fee is what will be charged.

Don't know if this will still be relevant to you or not, but I just came across this same issue and found a fix for my particular situation: (Firefox all the sudden acting like a slug...even slower with multiple tabs).

First thing I did was a full virus and spyware check just to make sure that there wasn't a malicious cause. Came up clean.

Did a modem reset to resend the signal (unplugged ethernet cable and modem plug, shut down computer, wait 60 seconds, then replug and restart). Excellent signal strength. No problems there.

Checked internet explorer and netscape to see how they were faring. Perfect speed, so it's just firefox (a relief).

Fix - reconfigured my Firewall and reset it to allow Firefox once again since the updates I installed interfered (both my anti-virus/firewall program and Firefox on the same day)
Tutorial is here Link has tutorials for several firewall programs
