Default a question about working out

i know you can do too much cardio, but can you work out too much? like, i get bored very easily, so i like to switch it up. run a mile, do 20 minutes of pilates, 15 minutes of high intensity cardio is what i plan to do today, maybe adding on a 20 minute cardio yoga workout too. is this bad?

i dont really want to lose a lot of weight, just tone up and start working out regularly. and if i force myself to, say, run for 45 minutes, or something, i won't stick to it because i won't want to do it. when i switch things up it's easier to keep going.

I don't see how that could be bad. Professional athletes and dancers are that active all the time. The only issue with over-doing it is if you exhaust yourself and burnout. I have been prone to this...working out hard for a really long time, injuring a muscle unknowingly, days of pain, and I get out of the habit. But I get excited about new things and always tend to overdo them. YMMV.

It should work fine. For cardiovascular health you need to get your heartrate up for a while, but for weight loss, calorie burn and toning it doesn't matter if you do a bunch of little 10 min workouts or one big session.

A lot of trainers even push the cross-training thing, because varying your activity is very beneficial. You tone different areas and get your heart rate up more effectively by challenging new muscles.

Switching it up is much healthier for you- it puts less strain on any one muscle group, reducing the risk of injury. It also keeps the body from adjusting to a routine and plateauing. The overall workout you described runs for an hour at most (depending on how long it takes you to run a mile), which is by no means excessive.
