WOW. Less than a minute after I posted.
Have you seen the Anonymous videos? They're really wierd. Apparently, February 10th is the day Scientology is supposed to die. I got my popcorn ready, because I'm not ashamed to admit, I'd like to fight Tom Cruise, so I wouldn't mind seeing what kind of affect this has on all his wacky goodness.

Apparently it's all for real.

I have a couple friends who did some work at their church in LA (they are not scientologists.) They said it was the biggest kook farm they ever saw - said it made the tin foil hat people look sane. Aliens, interstellar wars, bizarre contraptions and gadgets. The money was good though - crazy people pay well I guess.

This is for real. They have already attempted one major attack. It turned into a bit of a disaster. The Church of Scientology hired a network security firm to protect themselves from the DOS attack. Basically, this company placed a server in front of the Scientology server(s) and basically it caught all traffic heading to the site and filtered the DOS packets out.
Now, this is where it gets kind of funny. A member of "Anonymous" believed that he found the real servers (as opposed to the protection server). He posted the info in the "anonymous" IRC room. All the "members" proceeded to attack the server mentioned. Turned out it was actually a server for some pre-school (or something along that line) in Denmark or the Netherlands (can't remember for sure). They blew that server up pretty good.![]()
Don't believe everything you hear.
Anon did take down several Scientology websites. There also was an incident where Anon accidentally DDoS'd a school's website. That website was slowed down temporarily, and those involved recognized their mistake pretty quickly. No permanent damage was done to any of the sites, either to the Church of Scientology or to the school in question.
The "hack attacks" were attention-getting ploys, and to some extent they worked. We have moved on to live protests, which have had a real impact on getting the word out about the CoS's harmful practices and abuses.
We are a peaceful group. We don't make bomb threats or death threats, though the CoS has manufactured at least one such threat in an attempt to frame us. This falls in line with their policy of defaming their critics, which they call "Fair Game." Google "Operation Freakout" and "Paulette Cooper" and you'll know all you need to know about it.
Incidentally, "Fair Game" is exactly what we're protesting on May 10.

That's my birthday. I am chosen by Zulu or whoever their god is.
Yo anon.....was the person who started Anonymous an ex-Scientologist or something? I don't have much of an opinion on CoS (basically because I've never researched it in-depth or anything), but what I've heard is whack. I was just wondering maybe the group was started by people who have been personally affected by it, either that or CoS is so fucked up that a bunch of non-Scientologists decided to protest it.
A little of both. We have many ex-Scientologists who are involved, because their families were torn apart, or because their savings were stolen, or because someone they knew was hurt. Some are Anonymous themselves, others use their real names. Many of them, like Mark Bunker and Tory Christman, have been protesting Scientology for a lot longer than Anonymous has. But a lot of us are just people who have done the research and decided that they want the Co$ to stop.
As for who started Anonymous... if anybody knew, then they wouldn't be Anonymous, right?![]()
