I just had jury duty last week. While it varies by state, this is how mine went:

I was on call, had to call in every night to see if they needed me.

The day I got called in, everyone sat in a big room where they took roll. Then they split everyone up and sent a group of about 25-30 people with each court clerk to the specific court rooms.

Once in the court room, the district attorney and defense attorney asked everyone questions, including occupation, hobbies, and if they knew anyone affiliated with the case, etc. They disqualify people of their choosing (typically the ones they think have bias in the case).

No, you won't be able to get out of it simply because of your job. They don't pay that well, but your employer can't threaten your job if you're called for jury duty. If you're picked for a trial, the length of time you're there depends on the trial. If not, you'll probably only be there a few hours to a day. I was out in 2 hours.

    Hope that helps.

I had jury duty in 2006. I'd imagine you got a letter explaining what to do/where to go? Jury duty is part of your 'duty as a citizen' and therefor you are allowed to miss work for it. Your employer is prohibited by law to fire you for going to jury duty. I know when I had it, pay was $6 for the first day of jury service, and $40 per day thereafter for every day you serve as a juror. And, even if you qualify, you may not get picked to be on a jury, so don't worry too much about it until you know if you've been picked.

You might not even get called. I got a notice that told me to call the Sunday night before and see whether I needed to report the next day. I didn't, but I had to call again that night. I called Monday night and had to go in on Tuesday. They took roll and then we hung out in a big room all day; I spent the day reading. Around 2:30 pm (I think), they told us we wouldn't be needed so we could all go home. I never even went up for jury selection.
