    Default Ferret litter training issues

I just got a ferret and she seems to be having issues with her litter box.

I've tried all the tips I've read- put litter boxes in corners, leave a poop in there so she knows that's where she should go, clean accidents thoroughly, praise her, etc.

She'll go in the box sometimes but at least half the time when she's in her cage she'll go in the other corner (tried to put in another box but it wouldn't fit) and when I let her out she almost invariably craps somewhere. I try to watch her and catch her but a lot of the time instead of backing into a corner she just lets it fly. If I put a litter box down anywhere in the room, she thinks it's a toy and just tips it over, shoves it around, etc.

    Any suggestions?

Mine learned pretty easily with a poopie in the box. However, I noticed that she kind of picked the corners that she wanted to go in. One was by my toilet, one in the right corner under my bar, and one in the corner by the front door. I just put the litter boxes in their respective places. Obviously, I can't put one by my door, though. She's generally pretty good about it but sometimes she PRETENDS to go there just to get attention, gah. It took a lot of yelling and time-outs to even get her to THAT point. Ferrets can be little assholes. For the cage issue, I would suggest heading to home depot and finding a way to create your own litter box. For the "letting it fly" issues, that is honestly the first time I've heard about a ferret doing that!

I know, it's weird usually she'll at least go against a wall or another object in my room but there's really no consistency at all. Maybe because she's young? She's about three months old.

When I first got her, I put shavings in her whole cage and then put kitty litter in her box. She thought the kitty litter was splendid to play in and dove into it like a sandbox.

So I put shavings in just the box, and old bedsheets in as bedding. It sort of worked for a while but then she decided bedsheets were just as good to go in.

So currently I don't have any bedding except for an old shirt and then shavings in her box. Again, kind of worked but she still goes in the other corner/ lets it fly on a regular basis. And don't even get me started on when she's out of her cage.

I got a newspaper today, I'll use it to cover the bottom of her cage so it's at least easier to clean

Hum... Mine DID let it fly a couple of times when I first got her (like, the first couple of days). But once she was back home (they're illegal here so I drove to Yuma, AZ to get her), she always went in corners (Originally, I kept her sort of like a cat. She had a bell around her neck and just had free roam). I have always had to use paper towels instead of toilet paper, though. She would dig in the litter and throw it everywhere!

Maybe you just confused her with lining the cage? You may want to use this as a last resort, but if you sold your current cage and bought a new and different one (craigslist might have some good used ones) and didn't line the new cage and had the litter box in it with the lining... She may not see the world as her litter box if she's in a different environment.

do not use cedar chips in ferret cages it can cause resperatory problems the best bedding is yesterdays news for litter, ferrets love to sleep on spoft cuddly things old t shirts and baby blankets are ideal... please look around online for a good faq if you cant find one ill messege you one.

never use clay cat litter, it can get lodged in their intestines and cause blockages. your feret also needs ferret vite for vitamines and they love that stuff. hope that helps.

How are ferrets for people allergic (moi) to animal dander? While I love cats and large dogs I sneeze alot and break out in hives.

    Now back to litter boxes.
