    Default Reaction to MSG?

Had Chinese food at lunch from my usual place. Had the same stuff I always have, in fact.

But this time I added an egg roll to the order. Anyhow, two hours later and I'm red as a beet. No stomach upset, although I do feel flushed.

MSG in the egg roll maybe?

Growing up in China, my grandmother kept a jar of granulated msg in the kitchen that she would use a spoon to add to most soups and dishes. It looked like salt. But I've ate so much of it that I'm immune to its side effects.

MSG makes my face turn red and eventually my throat swells up and I can't breath.... but yea the red face n flushed feeling is probably from MSG thats how I started then eventually it got so if I had it my throat would swell.

I get the twitchies with MSG, like massive twitchies, according to my hubby I have kicked him in the past after eating MSG.

    Scarlett,

You'll be glad to know that we never use any MSG in any of our food served at Casa Diablo and the dancers always eat free.

So... when are you going to take a trip to Portland?

Great! I'll go tidy up the dressing room for you. There's plenty of space in there so if any of you other ladies would like to join in it's going to be a huge party going on when Callyish and Scarlett come down. Woo Hoo!

MSG is actually one of many ingredients that people are very sensitive to. If you want more information about MSG side effects, look here, here, and here.

You should also know that if you are sensitive to MSG, you should be reading labels and passing on the foods that contain hydrolyzed vegetable proteins, autolyzed yeast, hydrolyzed yeast, yeast extract, soy extracts, protein isolate, "spices" and "natural flavorings.

^^^^ Thanks, VG, for rescuing the thread from the threadjackers.

Update: I'm my normal color again. I did more or less pass out when I reached my house last night. Woke up in the middle of the night thirsty as hell. But whatever it was, it's cleared my delicate system already.

How do you know this? Do you actually check every single ingredient of every single thing you serve?

If you use a spice combination that just lists, "Spices" on the label and doesn't go into detail of what spices are used...it's 99% certain to have MSG.

MSG is monosodium glutamate. It's also called hydrolyzed vegetable proteins, autolyzed yeast, hydrolyzed yeast, yeast extract, soy extracts, protein isolate, "spices" and "natural flavorings."

^Thanks for pointing that out, VG.

I have several allergies that can be almost instantly fatal. I learned the hard way not to trust people who say "Nah, this NEVER touched the same oil as our fish." or, worse, "No, we ABSOLUTELY don't use egg substitute in our omellettes/cakes/pies."

If you're right, though, CD, kudos to you!

I second most of what VG said.

MSG is an excito-toxin... a flavor enhancer that causes the neurons in your brain to fire so rapidly that they actually burn themselves out, causing lesions on the brain. Believe it or not, it actually used to be in baby food! The lesions can actually be seen on brain scans.

    Monosodium glutamate
    Disodium phosphate
    protein isolate...

If you're sensitive to msg, steer clear of the above.... and pretty much anything ending in "-ate" as well as "spices."

My younger sister is so allergic to it that she can't even SMELL anything with msg in it or she gets migraines.... if she eats it, she'll be in the hospital with half of her face paralyzed like last time!!

I hate MSG's. They make me SO bloated and give me the worst heartburn and indigestion. I try to stay away from them as much as possible. When I eat Chinese I find the places that don't use MSG.
