    Default I need job advice....

Ok, So I've just moved to Los Angeles from Austin, TX. So far so great.

I've worked in alternative health care for several years and loved my last job, which I left to move here.

Awhile back I had my akashic files opened and during that process I was told that the person saw me doing something with artists. My educational background is in music. I studied music business and feel that I could most definitely do something in that arena, I just don't know what. The akashic person said I need to figure out what it is I'd love doing and go for it.

I put my resume up on Monster several months ago and have interviewed at a few places here and there, along with temp agencies. A company contacted me and I've interviewed with them three times as of today. At the end of today's interview they asked that I send an email to the head of the company telling him why I feel I'd be a good fit and why they should hire me.

That job pays nearly 3x what I made at my last job and has full benefits. I still own my home in Austin and am renting it out. Potentially having a house payment as well as rent to cover here, should something happen with renters scares the shit out of me.

My practical side is saying just take the job, worry about doing what you love later.

My romantic said is saying "hold out. everything will sort itself out. figure out what you love and worry about the rest later"

Renters are going to be paying me soon plus I have a little extra money coming from the last paycheck I'll be getting on Friday..... but I don't have money for bills and such really. I'm not freaking out about this....which is strange but....

What would you do? Any tips, advice, past experience sharing......

I think I get the gist here, Miss Taylor--essentially what you have in front of you, what you have to decide on, is something that is beginning to look more certain, that pays well enough to ease cash flow fears, but is not precisely what you want to do. Your heart and dreams seem to be pulled toward working with artists. I tend to side with the heart, though I know there will be plenty who will tell you to go with the money in the short term. Problem is, decisions like this are never really short-term; you can leave them, yes, if you don't like the job, but then it is like starting over...whereas if you follow the heart, you're always on the path you want to be, good or bad, and you can weather the storms. That is how it has been in my life.

Your story makes me think of a friend of mine. In high school, he got a construction job, and found out he loved construction. He got an engineering degree, and went to work for a huge company where he felt nobody paid attention to his ideas or plans. He was hovering then between two ideas: either going to law school, or getting involved with a couple of friends of his, each throwing in thirty grand, to build what was essentially a "Jiffy Lube" business. After all those years my friend was attracted to the constuction aspect of it--see, he still had that in his heart and blood. He called me and asked me what to do. We talked for a long time about it. I could hear in his voice that he was excited by the business idea, and I told him he should try it--he could always go to law school later if it didn't work out.

That's what he did. Borrowed thirty grand against his mother's house, and his job of the three founding members of the business was the construction side of things. After ten years, he has a booming franchise, and had constructed nineteen of the facilities. He sold the business and never has to work again, though he is involved now in still more construction things.

The point is, it was in his VOICE, the seeds of success. He wanted to get away from the big corporate world and get back to what he loved. And I was close enough to him that he could trust I would reflect his wishes. I wish I could hear your voice, Miss Taylor--I think I would know then. But what I'm hearing here is that you are still searching. Search for what you really love, for what moves you, and get on that path, and I am convinced the rest will follow. I've never seen a situation where people went after money alone and found true happiness; I knew one of the richest men in the world once (he is gone now, but every presidential candidate went to this guy for help) and what he loved was the stock market--analyzing it, predicting, getting into the human nature of it. He had a huge house with furniture that was all banged up and chewed up by the cats--he didn't care. He was into the financial world for the game, the human nature of it. A very interesting guy. But every time I see someone come up with scheme after scheme to make it big, they never really do, because the money is the only goal, and there is really nothing behind it to sustain the human interest, if that makes sense.

This might sound naive to some, but I would say, listen to your heart, and think of the long-term--imagine a journey that will make you happy, and the rest will follow.

"akashic files opened" what does that mean??

I don't know what would be best for you, but the practical side of me says take the job with money and use the time of comfort to look for work you love... whether that involves taking night classes to re-skill, or setting up a business or whatever rocks your socks...

Then again I usually never listen to my practical side and we do tend to be more resourceful when we are desperate and complacent when we are comfortable so....

Take the job. The music industry in LA is full of uber-douchebags who will lie to your face to get what you want, rip you off, blow you off, etc. But there is still opportunity.

To add to that, cost of living in LA is really expensive compared to here. I would try out the new position, and start networking your way through the music industry to see where you fit.

Also....music business is business more than art. Determine the specific areas of that field you would enjoy and be good at. And write yourself a personal business plan for growing into that industry, or creating your own thing. It doesn't have to be a long, drawn out thing. I've made business plans on bar napkins.

Create a vision for yourself, a mission statement for what you could do in your field of music business, your competitive edge (what does Miss Taylor bring to the table that others don't), and 3 quantifiable and measurable goals.

It can be done in less than 2 pages of a Word Doc. I hope this helps you. There is no reason you can't have the best of both worlds! You can do it girlie.

Wow.. Jk Jim... what a thoughtful reply. Thank you.

Reading everyone's reply was like being in my own mind for a second. I still feel torn.

I want to take that job because of the money. I know that I can use my time while there to explore my "desires" in the music industry.

Here's my problem. The owner of the company wants someone who will make this their career. Someone who wants to be there for the long haul and really move up within. I would feel awful if I took this job and after six months I said "peace out homey... I'm on to something else". I'm too loyal sometimes.

Or maybe I can do both.

Katrine, that was great advice. I've spent a few days "soul searching" since I've been in L.A. Not much else to do since I don't know many people. haha.

I'm going to re-read what the three of ya'll have said and let it marinate. I have to send an email telling the owner why he should hire me. I think saying I'm perfect and awesome might not go over so well. lol. I actually said that during the interview today. I'm such a nerd.

Take the high paying job, Taylor. If there's a recession coming, you will need a nest egg, especially in over-priced LA. You definitely don't want to find yourself having to come out of retirement out of necessity, especially in LA.

    ArmySgt...lol. Yes sir.

I sent my "why you should hire me" email Thursday. I haven't heard back but I don't expect to until next week.

I need to go shopping for work clothes. I could go to work in ripped up jeans and my house shoes if I wanted at my last job. haha.

ETA: I will take it as I haven't heard back from the guy that wants me to do consulting for him. Well.. I'll take it if it's offered. I have a feeling that they aren't going to offer me the job. But dear god, I'd love to be making that kind of money right now. Especially after some douche bag emptied my account the other day..... oh the joys of having your account information compromised!
