Fertility Awareness - Natural Birth Control

I've been on the pill for most of 12 years. Too damn long to be taking artificial hormones, especially with my risk of breast cancer and stroke. I hate barriers though, and the copper IUD didn't work out, so I've stuck with the pill.

I've only got one month left of pills and I was thinking of trying the fertility monitoring method and getting off the hormones altogether. You know, where you just pay attention to your body chemistry and avoid sex when you're fertile. I know there's some modern method that works better than the Rhythm Method (which is a joke) - does anybody have info on this?

^The problem with fertility monitoring methods, especially since you were on hormonal birth control, is that your hormonal levels aren't regular, and won't be, for quite some time.

After getting off pills, it can take several months to regulate again, which makes it virtually impossible to predict perfectly when you're fertile and when you're not...and as you know, if you're off even by a day or so, you could be pregnant.

And just in case you need some more info on the pills pros/cons...
As a sidebar, it was just released last week that taking the pill actually drastically cuts your risk of ovarian cancer.

I'd advise keeping a big supply of condoms handy because I tried that and I thought I was in the clear because I can usually feel when I ovulate but damn if I wasn't wrong! Last time I tried that!

Buying those fertility sticks that you pee on for the first few months until you get in your rhythm helps. I've always used at least two methods of BC--pills and fertility awareness--it takes a few months to learn your cycle but once you do, you can pinpoint the five or so days a month you REALLY need to use another method of BC to be safe, or simply abstain. For me, those days generally include condoms and the pill.

OT, but I'm looking into an IUD myself...what problems did you have with it?

get the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility. it will explain how to do FAM whether you've been on the pill or not, and how to do it with irregular cycles, etc.

also, even though the FAM chick doesn't mention it as such, and it is in fact totally obvious, you don't have to avoid sex during your fertile days-- you just avoid vaginal and anal sex (or use condoms for those).

using FAM with condoms or abstaining from the relevant acts during fertile times is extremely reliable, somewhere in the range of 97 to 99 percent.

and the reason is not voodoo, but simply that ovulation only lasts so long, as do sperm. you wait them out, you can have all the sex0rs you want and never get pregnant. and even atypical female bodies still have consistent patterns to watch for to determine fertility. you can be completely irregular and FAM will still be invaluable to you.

the pill works by telling your body it's pregnant, which is kind of ironic in its way. but you don't even have actual menstruation on the pill, which is quite appalling.

anyway, get the book. it is worth every penny of that 20 dollars to find out how to be healthier and prevent or achieve pregnancy (and even pick the gender of the kid!) with just a thermometer, a sheet of paper and a brief check of your cervical fluid a few times per month.

I use this method right now. It's a 'long distance relationship' of sorts, so its a bit easier, but anyways, this is what I do:

    1. I use a spit tester for ovulation prediction; salivia crystalizes all ferny when you're ovulating, so it's pretty apparent

    2. I use a basal body thermometer; it confirms ovulation

    3. I chart it all online on fertilityfriend.com so that we can both follow what's up with my cycles; I'm regular as all heck, which helps

    4. We arrange a lot of our dates just before and just after my period. There are specific times that we allow unprotected vag sex and coming-in-pussy

    5. We do it in the bum or with condoms any non-safe time of the month

^That was a hot read, with all yr science n everythang girl

I was told to be careful the first 3 months after ending bc, as KK said. Unfortunately, I can't do bc anymore and we don't use condoms hardly at all, but yes @ times when ovulating. He is absolutely exceptional with pulling out though, and when I go down on him before hand, he almost-cums-than-doesn't (awesome, can control himself) about 15 times, so hopefully that takes care of a lot of pre-cum.

Uhhh I don't know what I'm trying to say here, other than pulling out has been more effective than I used to think--I kinda had like a SUPER liberal sex education, left believing you'd get pregnant any old time there were no condoms, bc of pre-cum, but we've been together 3 years, and I am a fertile person bc I've been pregnant more than once before that (and not being outrageous and cumming inside either.)

But I think I'm being a dummy. If it was perfect, we'd be using condoms for 5 days around ovulation time.

    1) Yes it was hot!
    2) You just wanted to brag on your man with his superhuman penile control!
    3) Color me ignorant, but are women more fertile after they've been pregnant? Is like your body says "whoa, so that's how it's done!" and it's easier to get pregnant again?

depends on the woman, and especially if she decides to nurse. nursing is pretty good au naturel BC.

anyway, that's why i love FAM so much. every woman's body IS different, and it is great that there's a method of BC out there that acknowledges this and helps women create the best plan of maintaining their health for themselves, not a generic AnyWoman with a mythical cycle.

i wish doctors would start with FAM before anything else. but then that would cut into their money, i suppose. bleh. i wouldn't trust the same folks who brought us thalidomide and DES to be completely honest about the risks of telling your body it's prego when it's not.

i totally agree, it's so much better. I feel so much happier when I'm not on hormonal BC, and healthier. A lot of people don't know there are alternatives that are just as good, and that's so sad.

I only read the first post, but I think you're referring to Natural Family Planning. You chart your periods but also check your temperature and your mucus to figure out when you're fertile.

It does work pretty well. As she's Catholic she uses it. People assume it didn't work well because she has four kids but that was actually on purpose
    Order Avon through my website!

were you trying to get pregnant- FAM can be used 2 ways, to concieve, or to avoid conception.

also, it really is as effective, or more, then BCP as long as the person is 100% dedicated and in tune to her body.

I also have to add that i was using Natural Family Planning with the intent to NOT get pregnant. Hormonal BC fucks me up and makes me hate sex and turn into a super bitch.
I used the website tracker to track my periods and well....

    Need i say more

I know its different for everyone but this was my experience. I would say at least ALWAYS have him pull out. I let him cum in me on "safe" days and i'm about to be a mom.

I want to get that book. I rarely have sex anymore but I'd like to be able to be spontaneous about it when I do rather than having to put a condom on. We both dislike the feel of barriers and I can't take the pill, nor would I want to.

FAM is 97-99 percent effective. that means a very few women will still get pregnant even with perfect use.

there's a lot of trojan and pill babies too, and yet nobody's suggesting condoms and/or the Pill are no good for BC, you know?

even abstinence isn't 100 percent effective, since you could get raped and conceive that way.

but i'll take 97 or so percent effectiveness especially if it's chemical free...

Wow, a lot of responses. Thank you all.

K is leaving on Tuesday and will be gone for a few months, so that gives me a few abstinent months to track my body and let it adjust to the lack of fake hormones. I'm going to read up on all this information while he's gone and hopefully I won't have to get back on the chemicals again.

I'm still interested in information, if anyone has any!

the website for the book is a good start.

http://www.tcoyf.com/library/myths.asp --page of common misconceptions regarding fertility.

once you get the book, it has a vast list of references if you want to find out even more fascinating stuff about the female body.

i truly wish every girl could have this information after hitting puberty.

    Yek, don't drink the water!

maybe the best way to not get pregnant or make pregnant is to only take part in homosexual activity!! Still getting loving without the risk. So technically people don't have to be abstinent.
gosh i must be in a funny mood

Safe days aren't always 'safe' I got pg from that method and I am sure I wasn't the first or the last

Best to get him to wear a condom or to pull out and use spermicide or other methods mentioned above!!
