Default i just dont know what's good and what's not!

ok, i went grocery shopping tonight, and im really trying to eat things that are good for me. im taking way better care of myself lately with my crazy schedule (i work at a school 724-245 mon/wed/fri and dance at 8 those same nights) and trying to take advantage of my days off by working out and stuff. i bought lots of stuff that i know is good, like whole wheat pasta and organic marinara sauce, and nature's promise corn chips with organic salsa. but i was looking at some other stuff and i just dont know!

i read the ingredients, and they look fine. but there's a TON of sugar. i was specifically looking at odwalla smoothies (http://www.odwalla.com/product1.asp?...ragescategory). so... are they good, or not? how can i tell what's really good for me and what isn't? i know to look for hfcs, but what else?

i dunno about odwalla but i know that naked juice is super healthy and actually really good, so you could probably make healthy smoothies at home using that?

i find the best way to stay on top of nutrition is to buy raw ingredients and cook most of what is eaten at home. that way it is easier to control what actually goes into meals. but it can also get kinda pricey which is really unfortunate. the organic pastas and salsas and sauces are all real good choices too, though all of those except the pasta have the potential to contain a lot more sodium than a person actually needs.

It can be difficult to make a recently single man pay for sex when he knows that a quick trip to the local watering hole would secure at least one hard drunken tumble for far less cash. It is even more difficult when he is something of a dead ringer for James Bond as played by Daniel Craig and possesses the sort of awkard charm and confidence that brands a man like him as a lady killer.

Cut waaaay back on dining out and sodas. You're conscious of what you're putting into your body so that is very promising. Seriously, volume is the most important factor. Just cut back on portion size and you'll be fine. If you're being more physically active and watching portion size, you'll lose weight. Freaking out about a grain of sugar or white flour will drive you nuts and kill your diet. Just be conscious of physical activity and volume.

You sound like me a few weeks ago!

I have a couple guidlines I follow to keep me fuller longer and eat better, since this is what you also want to do:

-The produce area and the meat department are good.
-Anything without a label (fruits, veggies) are usually safe
-Try to limit caffine severely. If you can cut it out entirely, good.
-Things that have to advertise things like "Good source of____!" usually aren't much better than anything else. If it's good for you, they shouldn't need to tell you that.
-Try to get more protein. My simple trick is to look at the contents label and try to have more protein than carbs and sugar.
    - IE: Something has 12g of carbs and 11g of sugar; therefore I want at least 13g of protein to balance it out.

Here's some things I buy regularly. I have so far lost 15lbs without even trying and my body seems to becoming happier:

    -tuna
    -Hormel no bean chili
-Italian sausage (One sausage keeps me full at work for up to 3 hours while I run around)
    -Almonds
    -Celery
    -Peanut Butter
    -Whole Grain Bread
-Tillamook sliced cheese (look at the label; many of the Kraft cheeses have tons of carbs but hardly any protein. Tillamook has lots of protein and way less carbs)
    -Lunchmeat
    -Carrots
    -Lettuce
    -Potatoes

    And so on.

no no, im not trying necessarily to lose weight. i mean, i am, but i just want to be healthier overall. i dont drink soda now, and if i eat out, i eat what i want because otherwise whts the point? im not freaking out over anything, lol, i eat white bread and i really do eat what i want. im just trying to be more health conscious.

i like that idea to make sure it has more protein than carbs! thats good! ive never heard of tillamook cheese, but i'll look for it. that might not be an east coast thing.

about cooking at home, im very picky. thats a problem. plus i dont have time to do that half of my nights. on days i work, i come home, take a 2 hour nap, get up, shower, grab food, and leave for the club.

Plus 1 on Tillamook. I have a very picky friend and Tillamook is all she eats. As far as healthy eating goes, I try to stick to the aisles on the outsides of the store. The inner aisles are where the processed and sugary stuff lurk.

if you're really picky about cooking, designate a cooking day, and economize your time. Make meals for the whole week, on just one day. By that i mean:

    1. roast a whole chicken. or buy a large rotiserie chicken, that's even easier!

meal 1: roast chicken breast with sides (roast potatoes and corn or a salad) 1 serving of chicken breast. (dinner)

meal 2: chicken ceaser salad (dinner)

meal 3: chicken salad with remaing breast meat (lunch)

meal 4- barbeque chicken sandwich (lunch)

meal 5: a chicken and veggie omlet with meat from thigh- breakfast

meal 6: apricot glazed chicken breast (just thin apricot preserves with water , and cook, pour over thigh meat) dinner

    snack 7- chicken leg

meal 8: chicken soup with leftovers

    also prepare:
salads- cut up, and individually put in tupperware. dress later

3 steak fillets- serve one with pasta one night, another as a steak salad, and the last one cut in 1/2, and make 2 omletts.

saying I'm so picky is BS. You just need to retrain your tastebuds, and form better eating habits. I promise, things you don't like now, you'll enjoy later. Not everything, of course, but a lot of things. Just try it, with an open mind, and take the words- "i don't like" out of your food vocab. I promise that will help.

    and- easy healthier updates:
    1. milk instead of soda
    2. real fruit juice instead of sugared up varieties
    3. eggs and fruit with milk instead of cereals
    4. baked instead of pan fried
    5. seasonings instead of salt
    6. water and fruit instead of soda and chips.

and keep in mind, organic does not mean healthy. Chips and salsa are an ok snack, but still read the labels. like BG said, protien!!!!!!!!!!!!! Carbs, especially refined carbs, don't give you as much energy, or as much bang for your buck, so to speak. Instead of chips and salsa try carrot sticks and cheese cubes, that's protien, calcium and so many vitamins and minerals. or maybe make some guacamole, and add that to you chips as well.

lastly- pre-pack snacks. those little ziplock snack bags are so handy!!!!!!
    1. whole wheat/grain crackers
    2. cheese cubes
    3. yogurt(no bag)
    4. grapes
    5 berries
    6. banannas (no bag)
    7. peaches/necterines
    8. deli meats (I like them rolled up on toothpicks!)
    9. hard boiled eggs
    10.celery sticks with peanutbutter

good luck!!!! oh, and totally listen to BG, she's spot on!!!!

haha, ok guys, im not trying to revamp my eating habits all the way here! i kind of dont *want* to like things that i dont like. im ok with my tastes. i like what i like. and i'm not going to eat things that i dont like just to try and train myself to like them. i dont really have bad eating habits. i dont drink anything but 1% milk and water, unless i'm out at dinner or something, i dont eat fast food, ive stopped ordering out, and i typically dont keep junk food around my apartment. thats why i bought the chips and salsa.. because when i DO have a craving, that's way better for me than doritoes or something.

i appreciate all the suggestions, lola (i really do! ), but i wont do that. i work literally all day and am up almost 24 hours, and then a day off, and then work. on my days at home i dont want to do that. i dont enjoy cooking. i mean, i might every once in a while when i'm feeling productive, but i already use that time to run errands, clean my apt, do laundry, work out, whatever else needs to be done.

i just dont know how to tell whats good for me at the grocery store and whats "good" for me but bad in disguise! like lean cusine meals are packaged as being healthy, but they really arent all that good for you. thats all i was asking!

Tillamook Sharp Cheddar is blissful. And made in Tillamook Oregon!

It's great you bought whole wheat pasta, since white carbs are all pretty useless. I can't stand the taste of it though, so what we've been doing is mixing white and whole wheat. I can't tell the difference, but at least I'm being halfway healthy.

Fab. ideas Lola! Unfortunately, I'm like Britt on this one. My trainer, my ex boyfriends, and a bunch of other people have been trying to get me to do that "commit to one day of cooking" thing for years.

Perhaps it could happen if I had someone to cook for other than myself. And I believe Britt is in the same boat.

I buy the frozen, pre-cooked chicken breasts. I know they aren't the best, but I put a little water in them, stick 'em in tupperware, and they are done in 4 minutes. I also like the veggies that cook right in the bag.

Oh, and trail mix, I keep a big plastic jar of it at work, and sometimes in the car. I don't like raisins, so mine has cranberries and sunflower seeds in it, with other stuff.

Oh, and finally...I was talking about the stuff I am picky about to my trainer just today. If there is something you don't like, you don't have to force yourself to eat it! But if you want to eat healthy, comprimise is in order. I refuse to eat oatmeal, and they've been telling me to get used to it for years. Fuck that. There are other things out there. Still, sometimes I do force myself to shove something healthy and easy in my mouth too...like plain yogurt, or a banana.

Ok, ok, one more thing. This is something I've been really working hard on this last month. Britt, I have been working crazy hours like you for the last few years. I'm finally taking 5 minutes in the morning to do something like this:

    1. Take a tupperware with a few sections. Inside, put 1/2 banana, bunch of cherries, 1 orange
    2. Grab a few protein powder packs (mix with water only). Keep one in my purse, one in the car or office, one in gym bag
    3. Do the same with some protein cookies. I get mine at the gym and they are made by a brand called Apex
    4. Make a turkey or tuna sammich on light wheat, with lowfat mayo, mustard...stick it in plastic/ziplock

I am the worst, laziest, wake up at the last possible second person, and sometimes its still a struggle..but the above only takes a minute or two.

You should probably look at removing wheat/gluten from your diet.

There are tons of replacements for that...and MOST people are sensitive to wheat/gluten (bloating, irritable bowel symptoms, etc).

Invest some money in good, quality glass containers. Microwaving is bad in general (it will kill all the nutritious, good stuff in food) but microwaving in PLASTIC is even worse (everytime you microwave in plastic, a little bit of the plastic will leak into the food and you'll be eating toxic food...in addition to having no real nutritional value).

If you are avoiding HFCS (good choice, by the way) you should also be avoiding anything else that ends in -ose (dextrose, sucrose, fructose, sucrose, etc). You should also avoid all of the artificial sweetners (splenda, aspartame, etc, etc, etc).

You should avoid anything that has MSG. Most people are sensitive to the effects of MSG, as well. MSG is also called hydrolyzed vegetable proteins, autolyzed yeast, hydrolyzed yeast, yeast extract, soy extracts, protein isolate, "spices" and "natural flavorings".

I agree with putting one day aside and cooking up a bunch of servings. It's what we do here and, honestly, once you get into the habit...you'll feel lost without doing it!

    Good luck!
