Default I want to go veg again

Dottie's thread about voting for her and her husband led me on a little path through the PETA site and now I am totally grossed out by factory farming and want to stop eating meat. Other threads have been making me question things too. Thanks SW! I love you guys.

I was vegan for three years, but gave up because of poverty and lack of a good nutritional understanding. I wasn't all that healthy, and I actually gained weight because I overloaded on carbs. I didn't know that I had to eat certain foods or take supplements to combat my meat cravings. I did it all wrong, but now I want to do it again right.
And (thankfully) Jess is going to join me. This also means that Kembra will have a meat-free diet.
I want to do this with lots of recipes and a "support net" of resources so that I don't fail this time. We are doing this gradually too, so that it's not a complete shock. It's a transition to hopefully becoming fully vegan again. I just can't stand that I am supporting industries that profit off the misery and death of animals.

Does anyone have any help, tips, encouragement to offer?

If you really want to slip, wait a week and see if you still want it, and then have it if you do. More often than not you'll find it wasn't worth the slip and you won't want it again. I did that last night and it cured me of the steak craving.

I went vegetarian at 11 and didn't touch any meat until I was about 22. I've recently gone veggie again for the same reasons you are. I've really been craving a steak though, and so has K since I only cook veggie food at home now, so we went to a strip club that supposedly has the most amazing steak in Portland. It was okay, but it wasn't anywhere near as good as the vegan meal I had for lunch at Casa Diablo. Not worth the slip-up and I doubt I'll be craving steak again.

I can't be a vegan, I love cheese too much. But meat is actually a pretty easy habit to kick, at least for me. It helps if you cook a lot. There are a lot of really terrific vegetarian cookbooks out there.

It's becoming easier and easier to be vegetarian in today's world. There are amazing cook books, websites and restaurants out there. GoVeg.com is one of my favorites (plus Dottie's on the front now!).

    Good luck, and enjoy!!

although not uber cheap, i really really really like Amy's food. Amy's enchiladas and burritos are yum as is the Tofu Scramble. best part is that her stuff is sold in most supermarkets. for dairy-free deserts, i really love Soy Delicious, the ice cream bars and ice cream. Also check out cherrybrook kitchens stuff. their cookie mix is ohhsooyummy (saphire123456 has eaten them and said they were damn good for vegan cookies, but maybe that's my cooking)

As for non-dairy cheese, i happen to love the fake cheese they sell at whole foods but then again that shit is expensive.

    Love it!

I have never found a good fake cheese. It always tastes like plastic and never melts. Unfortunately we don't have a Whole Foods here but I'd like to know the brand so maybe I can ask around and see if they have it at our "Whole Foods equivalent" stores.
I really liked that Better Than Cream Cheese stuff and Tofutti ice cream.

It is so very worth it to take out a subscription to the Vegetarian Times. You'll get some of the best, healthiest recipes ever in that magazine. I felt so good physically and mentally when I used it as my guide for vegetarianism.

...Why am I not still doing that?

My vegan friend swears up n down by the book 'The Thrive Diet' by Brendan Brazier. It's got lots of easy recipes.

    I've never tried vegan; but if you have meat cravings there are so many vegan meat substitutes;
I like http://www.schneiders.ca/products.aspx?categoryID=7 (not sure if this is actually vegan)
    and...

Tofutti Cuties are the bomb! Must have these in my freezer at all times.

Amy's Kitchen got me through high school. I swear, I can live off of their macaroni and soy cheese. I like the soy version better than the real cheese. That and the shepherd's pie. Yummy.

Vegweb.com is my favorite place for recipes.

I have been vegan for 8 years and I have never looked back b/c the taste can never be good enough for how bad eating a tortured animal would make me feel. It could help for you to find local vegans through Meetup.com or vegweb.com for support.

The less processed the food the better. Veggies, fruit, rice, and beans are great. Eating out go for the ethnic places for the best veg selection: thai, indian, mexican, mediterranean, chinese, etc. I bring a protein bar to the club, so I don't have to order from whatever junky place the other girls are getting food. HappyCow and vegetarian-restaurants.net list local veg'n restaurants.

Amy's cheese isn't vegan. There are two cheeses I've found that I like: Tofutti Anerican cheese slices. Also Follow Your Heart/Vegan Gourmet cheddar. Fucken great for grilled cheese, to melt into soups, shred onto tacos...I swear! I also use a lot of nutritional yeast for a "cheesy" taste.

As for advice on nutrition...I don't know. I just eat whatever I want, no supplements. And I'm perfectly healthy. I do expect you to take heat for "making your baby be vegan". Because human children are supposed to suckle cows...I guess. Be strong, fiercest sister!

anybody in Dallas/Ft Worth or anyone going THROUGH Dallas/Ft Worth you HAVE to check out the Spiral Cafe. It's completely vegan and it rocks!

They've got the best jamaican jerk sandwich *drools* and their brownies are really good!

I'm not going to take her off the formula she's on, mainly because we get it free from WIC, and I think it's a better breast milk substitute than soy. That's another issue altogether, because they give us so much milk and cheese and eggs. I want to keep getting WIC but don't know if they have vegan alternatives. I don't want to not use my checks because I don't want their funding to get cut.

I guess I really need to watch what I eat more vigilantly than some when it comes to avoiding cravings. If I ate whatever I wanted, it would be cheese fries and chicken wings. lol

You know all this fake cheese, fake meats and fake dairy is shit generally anyway just swapping one shitty food for another. Much of it is processed crap and not really good for the body.
Much better to just eat whole foods, lots of fresh fruits and veggies, nuts, sprouts, grains etc.
I wish I wasnt so tired right now, Im sure i had a better way to say that!

Agreed, but the fake veggie burgers are soooo good, and the fake meat makes it really easy to cook for my husband and just use meat for his and tofu or the fake stuff like chikin for mine. Gotta admit fake cheese is gross though. This time around though I'm not trying vegan. I'm still eating dairy occasionally.

Hmmm I'm not a vegan, but I'm vegetarian for the most part(depends on your definition...I don't eat red meat, pork, poultry, or shellfish, but I do eat some fish and dairy). I started out small, by first giving up red meat and pork, then a few years later giving up poultry. Sometimes it is good to ease into a new diet instead of changing it dramatically.

I'd recommend checking out the Morning Star brand of vegetarian "fake meat" products in the freezer aisle of the food store. Boca Burger is a good brand, too. Their products are delicious, and they're packed with protein too! I really like their "buffalo wings"(spicy soy nuggets that taste very similar to chicken), their chicken patties, or the black bean burgers. Just make sure you check the list of ingredients or avoid anything with "cheese" in the title(such as Boca Burger's "cheeseburger") if you are going straight vegan. I like to cook my veggie burgers with no bun(it's less carbs this way), and I pile slices of red pepper, green pepper, and portabella mushrooms on top. I also melt cheese on top of that, but you can easily replace that with the vegan fake "cheese" products they have.

I also recommend lots of fresh fruit, berries, and fruit smoothies.

Good luck with your decision to become vegan again!

You're right in a way, for sure. I just don't know how to give up the things I used to love eating without substituting them for something that's cruelty-free. I grew up on meat, and cheese and dairy, so these are my comfort foods. I fear that if I stopped eating substitutes I would go back to eating meat again.
Grains, veggies, fruits and stuff are all good but it gets kinda boring after awhile.

I second t he Vegetarian Times. I'm not veg anymore and I still wish I could get vegetarian times. When I get money again, I plan on resubscribing.

All of this makes me really want to go veg again, but at this point in time, I can't afford it. Perhaps when I get cash again.

Yeah, I went vegan because I didn't want to support torture, not for my own purity and health. I was raised on soul food, full stop. Being vegan has taught me the deliciousness of whole and raw stuff I never would have tried before, but I didn't set out to become an ascetic. I dig raw beet slaw and brown rice and bean sprouts now, too, but a southern girl can't live on bean sprouts alone!

I love MorningStar stuff. It's so much better than Boca. Their tomato basil burgers are awesome. If your vegan though, I don't believe they are.

Yay Alexxa! You're right about doing it gradually. I was veg for 5 years before I cut out milk--well, it was my mom who stopped buying and all we had was soymilk which I hated at first, but got so used to it, that before I knew it, real milk was giving me a stomachache even in coffee.

You're so right on...methinks you'll be back veg in no time.

Did you find the last time that your cravings were cut down at all? I was 11 when I became a full veg, but it took me probably about a full year to do it completely, and ever since I don't crave it at all. It's like ppl craving junk food bc they are EATING so much junk food, but on a larger scale of course....concentrate on stopping and you won't even think twice anymore.

I'd like to add, somewhat regretfully, that I started eating fish 1.5 years ago, once in awhile. I'm not sure why, when I was so adamently against it. I think the simple answers are "I got bored" and "I started lifting mad weights."

Well we are finishing up the last of the meat in the fridge and freezer and I've already stocked up with veggie meats. I'm not big on the Boca/veggie/Morningstar burger stuff. I guess it's because none of them even taste remotely like a hamburger and to me it's like eating some kind of hardened-veggie-paste-patty. I found this Smartground (?) fake ground beef stuff that I can use to put in tomato sauces and burritos.
I bought a bunch of nutritional yeast, and I make really good tempeh "Buffalo wings" out of hot sauce and yeast flakes and a little butter.
We bought Vegenaise, seitan (which Jess made into a yummy stir fry), tofurkey deli slices and fake breakfast sausage.
I've been drinking soy milk for years so that's not a huge change. Jess still has to get used to it.
I still have some lamb and shrimp in the freezer but I don't even want to cook it.
I'm going to talk to the lady at the WIC office tomorrow during our appointment about vegan alternatives. I don't know if they substitute for other things (like getting more veggies instead of the 6000 gallons of non-organic milk), but I still want to participate in the program to get formula.

My cravings get under control when I religiously take vitamins and watch more scary videos. I'll keep them bookmarked.
