    Default I'm curious..

I'm not watching the superbowl and was wondering about black people before the ships came.

I'm wondering where and what they were up to before the 1600's. I found a few things on the internet about African slaves in Spain in the 1500's. I think it would be interesting to learn more about their time leading up to enslavement. If anyone can point me towards some books that would be cool.

What a great topic ! I recently watched "Amazing Grace" and have been inspired to do research on the slave trade, etc. ( Something I haven't done since college)..

Also, the slave trade in Africa began way before 1500, many African tribes enslaved other tribes. So you might be better off studying books having to do with African culture.

Why would people enslave their own kind? Thats just crazy to me. Yet, the act seems closely related to present day sex slaves in America.

I believe it wasn't really that they were enslaving their "own people." I believe it all started out with different tribes (I think it still does in parts of africa today.) Warring tribes turned their captives into slaves. When others came from different countries they offered them the slaves in trade. They didn't care because these people were nothing but "slaves" to them and not really a member of their tribe.
Then these other countries got greedy and started either paying tribes to go out and make slaves of others (basically raid other tribes) or the other countries themselves would raid tribes and take the new "slaves" over seas.
I love to read books about the cultures in africa then and now. I recommend checking out african literature class book lists to check out books on that type of subject.

Have you rad Alex Hayleys Roots? That covers a bit about pre transatlantic slavery and its a good read - he is so lucky to be able to trace his ancestry!

its also worth (IMO) reading up on the difference between African slavery and the trans atlantic slave trade. Not to justify anything but there is a difference.

I also liked Slavery: The African American Psychic Trauma

I use to have a pen pal who was - and possibly still is in jail for inolvement with Black Panther style activities in the 1970s. He hand copied whole books for me about this sort of thing to help educate me about my roots. I wish I could remember all of the titles, there were so many. I have them boxed up at the moment. Maybe some of the names will come now Im thinking about it...

I suggest a book called "The Adventures Of An African Trader" if you can get your hands on it. In a nutshell it is the "account of the life of Captain Theredore Canot, trader in gold, ivory and slaves on the Coast of Guinea; his own story as told in the year 1854.". My copy is from 1928 so I don't know how easy it will be to get one but it is an excellent book on the subject....be warned however that you might not like the extent of the African tribes involvement as Farrah Holiday was discussing. Hey I'm such an arse....I found ya a version on da web; (I believe this is the whole book!! enjoy!)

Remember Africa is a continet, were talking about hundreds - thousands I should think of different tribal and language groups, so the situation cant really be looked upon as "enslaving ones own" anymore than the way the English treated the Irish can.
Its probably only because of transatlantic slavery that some of us like to think of Africans and people of African descent as some sort of unified group - which it isnt at all. Africans are very diverse, always has been. The continent was home to the worlds tallest and the worlds shortets tribes and the blackest people in the world as well as the whitest (albinos). Aside from phsical differencies, language and cultural differencies were and are huge too.

^^ Thats pretty interesting. It would neat to find out biologically how these different types of people became and ended up on one continent. I'll have to check out that book you recommended. You're always so helpful in this subject.
