Default I can't take the itching anymore!

Allright. My head itches and it itches bad. I was a twice a week washer (and had been for years) when the itching became unbearable. I thought maybe washing more frequently would help so I started shampoo/conditioning every other day. It still itches. Thank god I don't have dandruff.... I keep making MH check, haha. But what can I do??

I was using bed head Brunette Goddess shampoo/conditioner and when the itching wouldn't stop, I switched to Biolage for color treated hair. Still itching... although not as bad.

At one point, I even had a scab from the scratching I was doing. Ugh.

Tips or advice? I'm thinking about putting some jojoba oil on the itching parts tonight but I just washed my hair this morning and don't really want oily roots just yet.

Not going to help you tonight, but try using a boar bristle brush and really brushing your scalp so you can exfoiliate it before you oil it... also, try a sulfate free shampoo like PureOlogy.

Good luck and I hope you get some relief soon!

stop washing your hair so much for one thing.

also-- using a brush will help circulate and slough off the crap skin like mia said.

you can do topical oil treatments and see if that helps, but then you'd have to wash it-- if that works, try to then shampoo every 2nd or 3rd day.

There's no blood in my brain?! I think my circulation is ok. Maybe it's this sinus infection?! Maybe it's oozing out my scalp instead of my nose.

Ok...sorry, I'm all hopped up on meds.

I have a boar bristle brush... I would use that daily to keep the oils distributed through my hair. It felt oh so good on the itchy parts.

ETA: Mia... I was washing it every 2nd or 3rd day and had been for years.... that's when it got super itchy. Since I've moved from Austin to Los Angeles, it's gotten somewhat better but I still hate scratching my head all the time. I feel so dirty.

I'm thinking along the same lines as head turner, it could be an allergy you've developed... I recommended sulfate free products because sodium lauryl sulfate is a common irritant (not to be confused with sodium lauryl sulfoacetate, which is a larger molecule that cannot penetrate hair or skin and will less likely cause irritation or allergy... unless of course you're allergic to coconut oil- in which case you're screwed since both are coconut oil derived). Between the exfoiliation, oiling, and sulfate free products if you don't see any releif within two weeks, I'd see a dermatologist.

Same thing happened to me a couple of winters ago, and using Head & Shoulders helped me too, I didn't have dandruff either, but it helps with moisture. Good luck!

Washing more often will make you MORE itchy, not less. It dries out your scalp, and your scalp itches because it's dry. That said, I know how grimy the air is in L.A., so it may just be dirty and you have to wash it regardless.

Try massaging olive oil into your scalp. Leave it like that for about 5-10 minutes and then shampoo and condition just the ends - don't scrub the scalp. After a few times that might help. Olive oil is really good for the scalp.

There are a cpl shampoos out there specifically for dry scalp. Maybe try one of those?

I was just about to recommend switching to a SLS-free shampoo. It's the most common sudsy compound out there, but it's extremely irritating to a lot of people. If that doesn't work, check with a Derm. They can help.

I washed Sunday and today the itching is really bad again. I haven't gotten to Lush yet.

I know there is a list out there somewhere of SLS free shampoos... I need to dig it up so I can just go to long's and get something there.

My hairdresser told me to try Head & Shoulders too, regardless of the fact that I don't have dandruff. My head was super itchy, and it worked wonders. This is the cheapest and eaiest to come by method, you might as well give it a shot.

If the itching is that bad, are you sure it's not lice or something? Have you tried Neutrogena T-Gel shampoo?

^I was starting to wonder if it's lice or something as well. Are you flakey or is it just itchy? Have someone check the hair by your nape for eggs.

Tea tree oil is really good if you're flaky and that t-gel shampoo has it in it. I recommended Bumble and Bumble's Tonic in another scalp thread recently... it will give you a cool feeling as well (I think that is also the tea tree oil).

This is probably bad advice because I'm sure it's drying... but I had lice when I was in elementary school and pouring rubbing alcohol over my scalp while hanging my head over the tub was the most refreshing thing ever. I'm not saying you have lice necessarily, but I think it helped me at the time because it cleaned the parts where I'd scratched the top layers of skin off. If the itching is intolerable, it may be some relief... just sayin'...

Have you ever though you have seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis? Its similar to what you describe. T-gel shampoo helps the itches.

It's not lice. I had my boyfriend check and he'd have gotten too since we live together. I'm itchy, not flaky.

I switched to PureOlogy. I washed my hair Thursday night and today I'm super itchy. I was downtown at the Chinese New Year Parade yesterday and we walked a TON so I'm sure my hair is super dirty. So I guess it's just a dirty hair thing?
