Default I hate you, Esurance! (a long and bitchy rant)

I just have to say that Esurance is the worst insurance company I've ever dealt with. And I've had several policies with various companies.
I needed to insure my car for a cross country shipping trip it would be taking, so I went online to look around. Mind you I was very pressed for time (I had about a week to plan and move everything from Cali to NY) so I didn't pick the cheapest policy. I went with one that I had heard mentioned a few times.
After getting a quote for approximately $200 per month (which was with full coverage and one accident from 2006), I was billed for DOUBLE that amount the next day, which I would not have been aware of had I not gone into my online account to print out my insurance card. When I called to inquire about the increase and hopefully get a refund, they claimed that I had another violation that came up and this made my policy increase $200 a month! So I asked if they would just take off the comprehensive and collision coverage and refund the remainder.

The guy agreed. I think all is fine. And since I am pressed for time now, later I will research better companies and get my rates lowered. I just want the car to be covered during it's move for the most part.

So now I'm in NY, it's about a month later and I get billed by them for $95, which causes my checking account (which had been drained from x-mas and moving expenses) to overdraw. Also, my refund has not gone through.
So I call and ask what's going on. I get a very RUDE and insensitive reply from a customer service agent saying that they sent a paper check refund to my old address and it got sent back to them (even though I paid with a debit card so it should have been refunded to the card) and I was not notified that the check had been returned. They had my phone number and my email address.
I ask why this has happened, and can they just credit my debit card instead with the money I asked for over a month ago. The guy becomes more rude and keeps repeating himself over and over in a more harsh tone not even answering my question until I ask to speak to the manager.
I get the manager on the phone. I ask him to review the account and explain to me why I have paid over $500 now for insurance for ONE MONTH.
After hearing him give me some corporate runaround about quotes being different from actual prices (which is unfair business practice since they should have notified me of the increase before subtracting payment from my card since I did not agree to the $400 but rather the $200), I ask him to finally just cancel my account altogether and send me a refund for everything BUT the month that I was covered under. He agrees, and says he'll put a rush on the check so that it should arrive in two days by FedEx.
About a week later (of course) I get a check for about $250. I call back and ask to speak to another manager since the underlings have proven themselves to be incapable of problem solving. I get another one this time - a woman. She informs me that my policy wasn't supposed to be canceled until February and that previous manager didn't enter the right date. So I ask again for a check for the remainder of the CORRECT AMOUNT THAT I AM OWED. She says she will send one for about $190.
About 3 days later I receive a letter saying that my policy will be canceled in February. I call and ask what this means since I have asked TWICE for them to cancel it on the day that I called. She says it's just a paperwork error and I should ignore it. Okay.
So another week goes by and I get a check for $115. I call again and ask what happened to the rest and they claim they deserve a $50 cancellation fee!!!!
I'm just leaving it at that. I don't have the energy to fight this company anymore. And the shitty thing is that EACH time I spoke to a representative or a manager, I have calmly explained my situation and complaints without being bitchy and each time they IGNORE ME. No apology, not so much as a comment really.

FUCK YOU ESURANCE. Really. Fuck you with something hard and sandpapery.

I am now with State Farm, only paying $140 for full coverage and that's with ALL accidents and violations reported.

I only know one person who uses esurance and he likes them, but he hasn't had to deal much with their customer service. Sorry you had to go through all that.

State Farm wouldn't insure me a couple years ago b/c I had a speeding ticket. ONE speeding ticket. They said they won't take on new policies with tickets. That pissed me off, b/c that was my only incident EVER on record and I have excellent credit, etc. I wonder if every state agency is different? Anyways, sorry for beginning to thread hijack....hopefully State Farm is better for you than esurance. Good luck!

Sorry you had to experiance this. I had esurance about 3-4 years ago. Had it for about a year and even filed a claim through them Never had a promblem, but a lot can change customer service wise in that span of time.

I have similar problems whenever I have to deal with my insurance for something. Example - they mistakenly canceled my policy and still made me pay that month. I'm still waiting for a refund! I just cringe now whenever I have to deal with customer service - regardless of what it's for. There's really no standard. Some people are awesome and helpful, but it seem more and more people are rude, disrespectful, and downright unprofessional. I wish there was more we could do as consumers.

Take comfort in knowing you are not along though

I wonder what benefit there might be in reporting them to the Better Business Bureau? Maybe someone else on here might have an opinion about this.

I've had them for 2 years and even when I use their CS I had no problems.

I'm sorry you had to go through that though/

When you get this resolved, I highly recommend Liberty Mutual for auto.

Thanks Kat - I looked into Liberty's prices and they were a little bit higher than State Farm, and I have a local agent here in town that I like and she insures my other family members so I want to do business with her.

The best thing we can do as consumers is to NOT consume products and services from companies that treat us like shit! Put them out of business. If you think it doesn't matter because you are just one person, then the rest of the people who think that way are keeping them in business.
I posted this hoping other people would read it and take it into account when shopping for auto insurance.

Hello_Kitty, I can do you one better. In 2002, a guy I know got rejected from State Farm DESPITE having a squeaky clean driving record(no tickets, no accidents). The whole reason they rejected him was because he lived with his parents at the time, and his PARENTS both had one accident each about 1-2 years prior. So he got rejected, and that's considering that his parents didn't even drive his car! The thing is, he ended up moving out of his parents' place literally a few weeks later!! Well this guy was a loser and I really hate him, so I'm kinda smugly happy he got rejected from State Farm LOL(I guess this is one of those moments when Nelson from the Simpsons would pop out and say "haaaa-haaaa"? lol).

OMG what a nightmare!! Thank you so much for telling us about esurance. I will be sure to avoid them. I've had a lot of nightmare experiences with other businesses(HSBC, Capital One, Macy's, the shitty pizza place near my day job, etc), so I can relate and hopefully I can avoid another bad experience by not using esurance now!

I'm really glad that things are going better for you now with State Farm. I heard that Travelers is pretty good too, although they do charge rates based on credit(not sure if they still rely on credit anymore though...they might have changed their rating criteria recently). Although I did have one small beef with them(they wanted to charge me the much higher 24-yr-old's rate even though I was turning 25 in 7 short days), so I switched to Liberty Mutual and now I might be switching again to save $300/yr more.

No offense to the OP, but I think you'll have a hard time finding ANY car insurance company that hasn't made some mistakes or hiccups with customers. That's why I refuse to boycott an insurance company that has done very well by me. YMMV. Esurance has been WONDERFUL with all the policy changes I have made.

Not to discredit you Alexxa, but I encourage people to form your own opinions. Many people are happy with esurance. That's why they're still around.

I can understand one or two mistakes, maybe a bad egg somewhere in the staff, but to have THAT many problems is just...really unprofessional. They don't deserve my business. Of course people are going to form their own opinions. This is just my experience.

^ Yeah that's the same way I feel about HSBC. I already wrote a thread or two about them on here.

Well, I had State Farm for Insurance from the time I got my license (at 16) until I was 25 years old (no accidents/speeding tickets...completely clean record...high credit). I had sold my car because I was living in the city of Chicago (who needs a car there) and moving to NM to go to school. I was gone for 2 years. In that time, I did not own a car...at all...

Now, 2 years later, I move back home and buy a car. I go back to my insurance guy to get insurance and...got denied...flat out...because I had no insurance coverage for the previous year. Never mind the fact that I had no car. And do you know what the underwriter told me? "Well, you chose to cancel your car insurance. Had you kept that insurance, you would not be getting denied." And I said, "So, you're saying that I should have paid over $100 a month for insurance on a car that I no longer owned? Just so I could keep the insurance on the off chance that I would buy a car in the next few years?" and he said, "Yes, ma'am. Most people keep their car insurance even when they do not have cars..." Yeah, sure...right.

Fuck you, State Farm. I ended up going with Nationwide and have never been happier.

Sorry to hear you had such a bad experience. But, at least it's over.

Haha, wtf? That sounds like a result of poooor employee training. They weren't trying to screw you to make a sale so I don't know what their issue was. Thats ridiculous.

I've had AAA forever. My parents have had it since they were teens and my grandparents since the company opened. I've never had an issue with them and I always get really decent rates and can usually negotiate.

My bf has Esurance but luckily we haven't had a reason to contact them after he purchased it. Hopefully we don't *knock on wood*.

    Love it!
