In someone else's house?
In someone else's house?
If I were to cat sit in my house...I would ask for either a 3 month supply of food, or the cost of the food for 3 months, and I would also ask for either a credit card on file with the vet, with a spending limit determined or for $2000 at least to be set aside in case of a medical emergency.
That just covers the cat's needs. Compensation to watch a cat...I wouldn't ask for anything, personally. Clean a litter box, put out food and water, pet the cat...cat purrs. That's payment enough for me. But...Maybe $200 total for 3 months? I dunno. I wouldn't chage much.
What would I be willing to pay? That's tough. I don't know. What's my cat's safety and happiness worth for 3 months, divided by what I can afford....
Heh heh heh damn with the $ set aside for vet bills! I guess I didn't really think of that, as he's never been sick yet in 4 years, but I'd just assume they would call me and I'd send the $ right away. I'm sure a vet wouldn't make them pay first, just get a cc from me over the phone.
Yea for sure food and litter goes w/o out saying. I was trying to think of how much it's worth. It's just like paying cash to someone for doing a favor, imo. Cats are really easy to take care of!
I think anything more than $100 a month is too much, do you agree? Or is even that a lot?

For boarding at the vet's I'd pay at least $15/day, same to hire a petsitter, so three months would be $1170. Plus I would feel terrible, terrible guilt about leaving a pet alone at home or at the vets for three months. So if you've found someone willing to petsit who you trust with your kitty you're lucky!
Now, if you have a friend who volunteers without expecting any money aside from enough to cover the pet's supplies, that is awesome, and is a favor, and they probably wouldn't think of charging you to do so. I have been on both ends of this kind of catsitting. It is easy enough -- if you like cats and already have some.
If it's someone who you think could use the money and you want to be nice, I would offer, oh, $50 a week. If money is entering into at all, I think that's a fair amount to offer.
I posted an ad, and got one reply already from a girl who sounds really nice. 2 lil dogs tho, Cinco's job in life is emasculating canines, lmao. She said $75, did she mean for the whole thing? I think I'd still pay her more.
I don't have $$ right now that's why I'm hoping to leave to strip somewhere else for 3 months, then prob move out of ABQ, sad as that is. I just put in my 30-day notice on this apt.
I'd feel so bad boarding him at a vet or a "pet spa" place....many cage hours, he is a frisky lil feline that lives to play.
If it's with a friend just buy a gift. If it's more "professional" you can always go with 'make me an offer", making sure that it doesn't include food or anything.

my friend cat sat at someone else's house for only about 2 months I believe and they paid him $1,000. BUT he also had wild wild parties there, which we cleaned up and everything after, but still, if they're watching the cat in your house be careful
I think it depends if the girl had any cats already. I have 2 kittens so watching one more wouldn't be too much bother. On the other hand, feeding, changing ect for someone without any cats would be quite an inconvenience so they should maybe be paid a bit more.

What if an emergency happens and you are unavailable at the time and they can't get ahold of you? I dunno, I'd worry. Of course, I worry about everything a lot anyway.

i would not leave my cats with someone i found on craigslist. never ever ever.
i dunno, i rent my spare room to someone i met on CL. But i got 49 emails (not including spam), and i was really picky about screening ppl. She's the only one i even gave my addy.
if you're really really picky, i think cl can be a good resource.
maybe contact vet's offices who don't board (and thus wouldn't be competing) and ask if any of their people would be interested in home-boarding?
^ That totally remind me of a website I found the other day..let me see if I can find it again.
I don't know if they offer it for cats. It's a website that screens people who offer to pet sit in their own homes or something.

Def do this! I know we had a few people we recommended for pet sitting when I was a vet tech. I watched a cpl clients animals for them myself when they went out of town..didnt live there, but would go every day to feed them, clean the boxes or cages and play with them. And you'll be more likely to find someone trustworthy and reliable with a vet referral, not to mention that they'd have an in withthe vet to be able to take the kitty in if there was an emergency. You may even be able to leave a CC# with the vet in case you cant be contacted in time(just tell him what your limit is)...we did that for several clients as well.
Just out of curiosity..where are you going for 3 months that you cant take the baby?
That's a good idea fancygirl, thanks!
I've gotten 3 responses so far from, from America's most hated website that no one ever will admit to using, and they all seem like seriously sweet girls. One said she wouldn't want $$ even--but all 3 have dogs, and 2 have other cats! I guess I'm just paranoid that they would be getting themselves into more than they want to. I mean, my cat would be fine, but it would make a lot more noise in their household, shoo know?
I wish I had the $$ set aside! Todd will be here anyway, he'd never let the Cinco Pot down!
I'd feel paranoid about leaving my cat (if i had one) with someone I didn't know who had pets... If I couldn't find a friend who I trusted, I think I'd hire a pet-sitter. I don't know your living situation, though. Could you get a friend to stay at your place or something?
If you think school is hard, try being stupid.
I have a girl that comes over when I am out of town to check on my 5 pets (dogs and cats) she spends a few hours with them and plays with them, feeds and waters them. I pay her 20 for the weekend.
Well that's the whole problem....I don't have a friend he could stay with.
I put my 30 day notice on this apt, and if everything goes right I'm leaving the country for a lil while.
I have no choice but to leave him with a stranger. But I know that there are some very good people in this town, that's why I moved here.
This place charges $15 a day for one visit, $30 for two visits.

I have the same concerns as Alaska. I can't take my baby with me where I'm going, too.Hope it doesn't cost me an arm and a leg, but it probably will.

I just paid over $500 for a petsitter for 2 weeks in my home. I would be really nervous about anyone watching my pets for 3 months who didn't have a reputation to hold up to. I'm guessing you don't have any friends with pets you could ask and offer $50-75 a week to?

I used to pet sit professionally. It's a lot of responsibility, since usually if you do it in the person's home, they want you to water their plants, pick up their mail, mow their lawn, shovel their driveway, etc. Sometimes anyway. I'd charge $20/ day for dogs, and $15/ day for cats. This vet asked me to cat sit for a month and a half and offered me $500. He had a hot tub, so it was a pretty okay deal.
Guys! I'm really really happy. I found a really nice girl, think she's in hs, lives w/her fam in a nice home, and I went over there with Todd and Cinco today, hooray!
She has the most adorable 9 month old all black kitten named Princess. She brought her into the room tho when I was about to get Cinco out of his crate for the first time, bless her heart. I hope to god she knows what she's in for....they won't be playing nice, not in the first few weeks anyways. Maybe I need to bribe her, send her lots of postcards or something, yea that's it, hehe. I'm gonna pay her $100 a month.
Another CL success story!

My friend moved back to Hawaii a month ago and left her cat in my care for the next 5, almost 6 months. She left me w/a check for $200, which I know isn't enough for food/litter for 5 months. 3 maybe. Ah well, I'm not trippin'.
