    Toner

What exactly is toner for? I have a bottle of it that came in a skincare package, and I was just reading in another thread about some of you "toning" with apple cider vinegar and other stuff. I am unfamiliar with the concept of toning. What is it, why do you do it, and how?

When I was a teenager, I went to some class session thingy about skincare. It was explained to me that there are three basic components of skincare that all skintypes require.
    1)Cleanser - to cleanse, duh
2)Toner - to remove excess cleanser, and other pollutants on the skin that the cleanser left behind
3)Moisturizer - (even for oily skin) to maintain elasticity and moisture on the skin, to replenish any moisture that the toner took from the skin, as well as many protect from sun damage

This is how it was explained to me, but there could be more to it. Personally, since I'm too poor and lazy for a good healthy skincare regimen, I use my toner/astringent as a make-up remover and over all cleanser when I come home from the club and just want to crash. It dries out my skin when I use it alone, and it stings sometimes. But I'm almost certain it's make for teenagers with ridiculous acne. If I could get a whole skincare system like I used to use, I would LOVE it.

Hm. Okay. I cleanse my face every night and follow it with moisturizer, and sometimes additional moisturizer in the morning. I'll add this toner in the middle. Do you rinse off the toner or just wipe down with it? This bottle I have looks all watery.

Read the bottle. Toner should have some form of alcohol in it, so you shouldn't need to rinse it off. You should run it over your face with a cotton pad, then let it 'dry' (it's really kind of evaporating). Then use your moisturizer.

not all toner has alcohol, in fact I won't use an alcohol based toner. I use mine to remove excess cleanser or if I'm battling breakouts. They're nice during the summer months too for extra refreshing. Sometimes in the morning I skip toner and just cleanse/moisturize. You don't rinse it off. Apply and swipe with a cotton ball (I've also used clean wash cloths too when out of cotton balls or if I want more exfoliating action)

Yeah, definitely refreshing after being in a smoky club. But toner isn't necessary all the time, it can be irritating to your skin if you're over using it.

Try 100% natural witch hazel, I swear by that stuff. iI really keeps my complexion refreshed esp. in warmer weather. All other toners/astringents I think are just too harsh.

Toner is suppose to balance out your skin. For instance if you are oily in the t-zone region which is your forehead nose and chin and normal everywhere else it's suppose to even that out. It's suppose to give you an even PH throughout your face. I understand astringient is different in that it removes dirt/oils the cleanser did not.

^^^ word... a good alcohol free toner also softens your skin so that your moisturizer will penetrate and absorb better.

I'm not a fan of toners that constrict pores, it just doesn't make any sense to me. First, if your removing your makeup properly and using a quality cleanser, your skin won't need an additional product to remove excess oil or dirt... causing your pores to tighten before you apply serums and/or moisturizers seems counterproductive to me...
