    Default Voting in primarys

I just found out that Virginia is having a Primary on Tuesday.
Can I vote just being a registered voter or do I have to be a registered member of a political party?

In AZ you have to be registered to a party. Independents can't vote.

I believe that's how it is for primaries in federal elections.

I'm not sure how it is in Virginia, Susan--in New Hampshire, we declare a party when we show up to vote, and so can vote either Republican or Democrat. Maybe it will be like this in your state, too.

Hey Susan --- Here is what it says.... "All registered voters may vote in either party's primary, but not both." Va is an open primary - so vote your heart out and vote often!!!

^ Really? I feel like such an idiot. I went to vote the other day, stood in line for 1/2 hour, and totally forgot that I was registered Green, but not sure if that would have stopped me from trying if I had remembered. You can only vote for to nominate someone in your party, afaik. Democrats pick a dem to represent their party, etc.

The popular vote doesn't matter. Why doesn't anyone get that?
Feel the fear and do it anyway.

I know its too late now but you must be registered as a member of a party to vote in the primary election.

it matters during the primaries. obama lost new mexico by a bare handful of votes (last time i checked the count, it was a hundred or so).

it was close in missouri too (where he won by a thousand or so).

and it was very close in darn near every state for repubs.

at least in this election year, whether you're a dem or repub, the primary races have been extremely close and victories have been reliant on higher than average voter turnouts.

On that note, I'm switching from Green to Dem for the June primaries, that's state wide. It's a really good year to do that for anyone else who's not registered Dem.

I think people should vote especially in local elections but I just think the presidential election is a joke. I also think that the average american doesn't understand the process.

It does count in the primaries, doesn't it? It is the general election in November where the popular vote doesn't count. That is all electoral college stuff, and the vote we cast is more or less considered an endorsement.

But it's the delegates that actually do the voting, we just tell them which way we'd like them to vote, right? There's nothing binding that says they have to vote that way.

Someone told me tonight that as long as I'm a registered voter I can vote, either Dem or Rep, I just need to pick one party for the primary. I think I'll just show up at the polls and see what happens.
