    Default food intolerance (some TMI)

Okay, so lately my stomach hasn't been very healthy. I'm gassy most of the time, and there's mucous in my poop. My friend was telling me that the most common cause of this is food intolerance to dairy, wheat, or soy. I don't drink any milk as it is, but I guess there are a lot of hidden milk proteins in stuff, and I DO love cheese. I eat a lot of wheat, and I love soy products. I'm currently cutting the dairy out (with processed sugar to match), by purchasing soy yogurt and avoiding cheese and stuff. Has anyone else had experience eliminating any of these foods with good results. I figure I'll start with the dairy for a couple of weeks before moving on to wheat and then soy if necessary. I will be VERY UPSET if it's the soy, because that means no more soy milk, tofu, edamame, etc. I hope it's not the soy.

I have a slight intolerence to dairy. I've never had mucus poop but once I cut out dairy my skin cleared up and so did my sinus problems. I had a bit of a cheese feast at christmas and really paid for it. My face looked like a pizza! Good Luck with it, I hope it helps.

    You may have Celiac's disease.

My mom would have a very upset stomach all the time (yes, mucas poop), and she finally got tested for Celiacs.

Celiacs is basically a strong reaction to gluten, which is found in many foods, such as bread, wheat products, cereals, liquor, gravies, and even milk.

Since cutting out gluten, my mom never has a sour stomach, and an added plus, she lost a lot of weight, since gluten is tied in with a lot of "white", starchy foods.

Celiac's is diagnosed through a simple blood test...it may be worth doing a little research on it.

Mucus in stools and gassiness is a huge indicator for IBS as well. Do caffeine or spices bother you too? Try eliminating foods, and see what helps? I got IBS out of freaking nowhere, and it's never gone away. I get these symptoms too.

I drink NO caffeine at all, but spicy foods don't bother me at all. I'm going to look into this gluten thing as well.

And I don't think I have IBS. My ex-husband had IBS, and the symtoms are totally different.

^^There are multiple types of IBS. I have IBS with constipation which means... well, I don't poop. It's rough. Some people poo too much. Some people have a varying degree of BOTH, which I'm sure sucks a lot.

It sounds like you're taking good precautions, and talking to a Doctor about whether it's possibly gluten or milk (very common foods and food issues) would probably be a good course of action.

I hope you feel better soon!

You could go to a doctor to see what's really going on. But meanwhile, try cutting out just one group of foods for a week or so and see how it makes you feel. Then try it with another group and see if there's any difference. I would freak out if I had to give up soy too.

We cut gluten/wheat and we're all feeling much better. Gluten/Wheat is the biggest of the "unknown allergens". If you need info on gluten/wheat free foods, let me know. But, for the most part, if you have a health food store nearby (not Trader Joes, but more like Whole Foods) you can buy a lot of GF/WF foods.

Not only did it improve our digestion by cutting G/W, but our minds are more clear and the insane tantrums from Makayla are done. Amazing what a food allergy will do.

^food allergies can affect all different aspects of life, like mood, sleep habits, etc.

Three years ago, it was extremely difficult to find gluten free foods, unless you ate completely raw vegetables you prepared yourself.

In just the past two years, HUGE progress has been made, and now the have gluten free cream of wheat (of course, it's called Cream of Rice lol), gluten free breads, pastas, muffins, bagels...foods my mom hasn't been able to eat in years.

Even our mainstream supermarket, Giant, has a health food section with gluten free foods. It's so much easier to eat gluten-free now.

IBS is usually due to something like gluten intolerance or een celiac.

I recently discovered I'm celiac. Zero gluten for the past 2 weeks and have never felt better. Never. I'd cut back on gluten a while before that and got rid of the bloating. But getting rid of it 100% has done a WORLD of good.

Best way to test for gluten intolerance is to eliminate from your diet for several weeks (2 months for better results) and then eating something with gluten to see how your body responds. Medical/blood tests aren't 100% accurate by any means when it comes to food intolerances.

Can you give me some idea of foods that have gluten? I know bread does, but can I eat live, sprouted bread? Yougurt? Oatmeal? I have no problem shopping at the health food store, so should I just look for stuff that says, "gluten-free"?

Most foods list gluten in their ingrediants. Other words to look for and avoid are malt, and wheat.

As I mentioned before, oatmeal is typically out, but their are variations, like Cream of Rice, that are really tasty. Cornbread is usually okay too.
This site is a great resource, and provides diet tips avoiding gluten:

Pasta gives me the symptoms you described after I eat it, so maybe it could be that?

    UPDATE!!!
I went to the doc today because it was getting worse--think bright green mucous and foul gas (gross, I know). Apparently I have a bacterial infection and a yeast infection in my intestines. So I have a script for flagyl and diflucan. Yay - more meds...

Just got to represent my role as IBS Awareness Spokesgirl, this isn't necessarily true. I know mine is not...that's why I bring up caffeine and spices...or salads. Or alcohol. Fat. Sugar. Anything in excess...this is IBS. It's a functional thing...fasting can set an attack off. And it can be constipation, or the other extreme, or alternating between both. Or just doubling over with crippling internal pain. It's a brain-gut disfunction...it's true food intolerance can present like IBS, but that doesn't mean all IBS is reducible to some intolerance.

And Veronica, I'm glad you saw a doctor! That's sounds horrible.

This is very, very true. Makayla sleeps better, her tantrums died away (it's almost like I have my little angel back...almost...she IS 5, you know. ) and there have just been a lot of good changes.

There is a website for anyone who is interested in making their own gluten-free food (for home cooked meals) that I love. http://www.glutenfreeda.com

Basically, if it has wheat in it, it has gluten. You learn to cook with Rice flour, Corn flour, etc...not wheat or wheat by-products.

VV, glad you saw a doctor and got it taken care of! That sounds horrible!

Make sure you stop and get a good bottle of probiotics (those antibiotics will kill all the good bacteria in your intestines). Kefir is also good. One serving of Kefir actually has 2x's the amount of good bacteria as one serving of yogurt.

    Hope you feel better soon!
