According to Limbaugh, Hannity and some other "conservative" pundits, McCain's candidacy will cause the Religious Right to "stay home" like they did in 1976 when Carter beat Ford.
First of all, a LOT of Evangelicals did NOT stay home. They voted for Carter and then switched to Reagan in 1980.
Secondly, I'm starting to wonder how "one issue" and ideologically pure some of these folks really are. Why wouldn't they vote their pocketbooks just like anybody else ? Why wouldn't they vote to keep America safe ? Or to see the 1st woman President ? Or the 1st Black ? There are a lot of black and Latin evengelicals.
I'm starting to wonder whether Dobson and Ralph Reed are more like paper tigers and that their actual influence is far less than some people think. Obama has significant appeal to Young Evangelicals. Hillary does well among single women regardless of their religion.
Add to that the Ted Haggard and Larry Craig scandals and who knows what they're really going to do in November.
