Angry They keep cutting my hours

So, when I first got hired I was full time. Then I asked to be switched to part time - part time was average 24 hours a week (full time 34 hrs) so they were like ok. In the meantime they fired 2 full time people, hired a full time and another part timer.

Slowly I was cut from 24 to 20 hours. Now she keeps changing my schedule. Im talking every other freakin day. Then, yesterday, new part timer asks for more hours. Guess what happens? Today I get a call cutting my hours even more and changing my days. AGAIN. This is the 4th time in a little over a week (keeps changing to accomidate new hires). On top of that, not only did they move my days around, the one day they DIDNT move they shaved away an hour. So, now this week Im working 3 days, 18 hours MINUS 2 half hour lunches. So, 17 hours.

Theres no reason for this. Ive been accomidating, Im good at what I do, I get along with everyone. The owners LOVE me. Its just the manager. (I was hired by the owners) I guess Im just ranting.

I dunno.... Im just getting frustrated. The manager is very nice to my face but I can see her being a total passive agressive bitch. I thought this the first time I met her. I guess its coming out now.... I think she doesnt like me but since the owners hired me and really like me she cant/wont fire me.

Should I stay and let them keep cutting my hours and changing my days? It doesnt really bother me, its just principle. I dont mind working a few hours, its kind of a hobby but this passive agressive shit is driving me nuts.

since you say it isn't bothering you at this point and if you enjoy the work I say stay until either it does bother you or you no longer enjoy the work. that is if you can afford the decrease of pay that goes along with less hours.

Yea, the pay isnt a big deal since doing hair is kind of like a hobby to me right now. Im working for a friends website 4x's a month so thats paying the bills. The salon is just getting me out of the house.

I just dont like people being passive agressive towards me but I cant beat this job. I can take breaks all day long, they accomidate me when I need days off (for shooting with my friend, dentist, whatever).

I know nothing about resumes, previous work exp, etc. Im thinking the future (like 6 months) when I leave this salon will it look bad to only be working 15 hours a week at my previous job?

^^^ no, especially not if you can use the owners as a reference rather than someone who dislikes you (mgr). it doesn't even have to be mentioned in your resume that you worked part time (although be honest if it comes up for some reason-- usually does not, though).

I can relate, because I went through the same thing. Tell me about jobs moving around hours every week! I hated that. Retail is the worst at doing this.

Hmmm perhaps the reason they are cutting your hours is because:
    a) they know you have other things/jobs going on, and they figure you don't mind
    b) Perhaps they expected you to work full-time, and then when you changed your availability after they hired you with the expectation of being full-time, they put less stock into accomodating the number of hours you'd want.
    c) You wrote in another thread that you were the only one of 5 girls who didn't bitch about the schedule you were assigned. I used to be the same way when jobs gave me a bad schedule. Unfortunately, sometimes being complacent can work in your disfavor because it results in managers taking advantage of your easygoing nature.

If hairstyling is just a hobby or a resume builder for now, then do the amount of hours matter that much? I don't think employers ask your previous employers how many hours a week you worked -- they ask for dates of employment and perhaps if you were part time or full time -- but I could be wrong.

Either way, it sounds like you are bothered by it, so perhaps you should talk to the scheduling manager and explain some of this. Maybe offer to work a smaller schedule or a less desirable shift one week in exchange for better, longer shifts the next week. If all else fails, maybe talk to the owners, since you said they like you a lot + they have influence over what the managers do? Either way, be assertive about it. I wish I was, back when I didn't speak up about scheduling issues.

I agree with MiaBella. plus if you are doing this to gain more experience then I agree double. passive agressive shit does suck though but it sounds like you have some decent perspective so I still stay stick with it until you just don't want to anymore.

Ugh I know what you mean about managers cutting/giving away your shifts to others. Don't mean to threadjack, but here's an annoying story about that.

I was working at this one chain restaurant and they took advantage of my complacent nature the entire summer I slaved away at that shithole. It started when they hired me as a waitress but ended up sticking me on cash register(making a lot less money than I would have if I were waitressing), then they scheduled me hours outside my availability that interfered with my college courses, then I had to DROP a nonrefundable course because working all their scheduled shifts made me fall behind(thus costing me more money than I made working there). By now I was bitter as HELL about the job but I hid my feelings at work.

After driving through nearly an hour of heavy traffic to get from my college to the shithole workplace, I entered the parking lot and got cornered by the loser stalker bf I had at the time. He explained to me that earlier that day, my workplace had called and told me that I didn't have to come in to work because they gave away my shift to the new girl. New girl accidentally showed up for work when she wasn't scheduled, so they figured they'd keep her there and cancel my shift...after I drove all that way down there!! They didn't even call me, they had to call the stalker boyfriend and tell him. If I knew that my shift was cancelled, I coulda stayed at the library(where I got all my studying done) and avoid the stalker boyfriend, who followed me around the rest of the night resulting in no studying for me(I know I shoulda stood up for myself more).

So you think that after being so easygoing, they would accomodate me, right?...WRONG! A few days later when I didn't feel good and could use extra time for my upcoming exam, I tried to call out and they told me that I "wasn't allowed" to call out. WTF? Later on when I needed managers to write a reference, they couldn't even do that...the one manager's idea of a reference was to keep me waiting for over an hour and then hand me some handwritten scribble on a greasy piece of receipt paper. WTF?

I wish I stood up for myself better and quit as soon as I started seeing it all go downhill. Thinking about this makes me mad, not just at the workplace but at myself for having been so damn passive and put up with shit(like losing a lot of money I spent on my college course) because of them.

Are you sure they know that you don't want your hours cut anymore? Maybe that's a stupid question, but I could see myself just going along with it and not complaining. Well, the old me would.

Honestly? I dont know. Maybe she doesnt realize Im done with the hour cutting. But not only that but the schedule changes every other day are what annoy me most. I mean I do have a freakin life outside of my 3 days a week. I guess as long as the shifts are only one closing a week Im ok. If she tries to schedule me 2 closing shifts we will be having a little chat...

Omg, retail hell! (I know it's not retail, but...you know)

That was rule #1 I learned ---don't ever let them switch you from FT to PT, this will happen every single week.

In the future, I'd keep with the (very coveted) FT position and like, switch days with yr coworkers frequently to make sure yr shifts are covered, but until you get back on FT, sorry to say yr probably SOL.

I think you've answered your own question - you were hired by the owners, the manager doesn't like it but can't do anything about it directly. Accordingly, she's going to make your life difficult in the hopes that you resign.

So, do you have any sort of written agreement about the hours/days you're working? If so, I'd wave it in the general direction of your manager and sweetly say "when the owner took me on, there were the hours we agreed - could you explain why that's changed?"

If you don't have any sort of written agreement, I'd keep a careful note of the hours you've worked and each time you've been asked to chop and change them. After a few weeks I'd bring up the subject with the owner and just say, "I love working here, but the continual chopping and changing of hours is making it a little stressful for me. Would it be possible to have more settled working times?"

What you don't want to do is directly confront your manager - because if it comes to a you/her situation the owner will probably feel she has to back her manager.

What you do want to make your manager aware of is that chopping and changing your hours might leave her in bad odour with the owner. However, you have to be very careful doing this - it's not a card you can play too often.

As to resumes - you might want to keep working there for longer than 6 months. When any employer takes you on, they'll ask themselves a series of questions - one of which is "how long will Audrey stay?".

If I look at a CV (admittedly not for hairdressing), I'd like to see someone has averaged at least 3 years in their jobs with maybe only one 'left inside two years for their own reasons' period of employment. If someone has a history of chopping and changing, I won't take them on. I don't want to spend 3 - 4 months training them up, then have them leave after 6 months.

That might seem an unfair attitude, but when I take someone on, I have to look to the needs of the business. I also have to think about what my superiors think of me - too many bad employment decisions will reflect on *my* ability as a manager.

    Phil.

I guess if the day changing does start messing with plans and stuff Ill say something. For now Im just going to suck it up and stick it out. I really like the owners and the girls I work with. I guess the manager is just trying to work with everyone and since Im being accomidating Im getting moved around.

See, Im NOT passive and Im NOT accomidating. I actually threatened to quit and was given me Sundays and Thursdays off like I wanted. I have an agressive personality but Im trying not to bring it out. I just want a normal schedule given to me every 2 weeks and that doesnt change daily. I guess now that were set with out hires and everything things should level out and no more switches will be made. I just need to have a little patience
