    Home Improvement Stores

When you go to improve something at home, where do you go? Are you loyal to one place over another? If so, why?

My experience is that Lowe's is way better than Home Depot in several ways, but most importantly (to me) in their customer service department. I also think the layout of Home Depot is fairly difficult to navigate around and has 100% a cold feeling/vibe. I find Lowe's to be very warm, the employees are helpful and friendly, and I like their selection better. If I can help it, I never go to HD. I joked around with a friend that HD gets their employees from Philly whereas Lowe's flies them in from Vermont (haha).
    Lowe's FTW!

    Love it!

Currently, we're big fans of Lowes... they have prettier stuff for our master bath and they honor the 20% off coupons we have for Home Depot.

I have not had much time in either. I think I like Home Depot a bit better.

I still miss Bunnings from Australia. I had such fun taking JCB there when he was 2-3

Having worked in the construction business, I marked "other" in the poll. It would really depend on what I was doing as to where I would shop for supplies.

I'm fine with Home Depot for raw lumber and hardware such as fasteners, nails, screws etc. Also concrete and concrete supplies and lower end building materials are reasonably priced at HD. Their delivery is affordable (even it is a bit tardy at times) and they have a liberal return policy.

I would avoid HD (or Lowes or any other big box store for that matter) if you need anything better than the basics. Mid range to high end building supplies and fixtures should be acquired from specialty retailers. Especially if you are doing a period restoration. If you are getting a remodel done of a kitchen or bath ask your contractor where he/she gets their supplies. Usually contractors are able to get special deals from suppliers and can pass that along to the customer.

I usually go to Home Depot but that's just because I'm more familiar with it than the new Lowe's.

I will absolutely not shop in their garden department though. Every poor plant I've gotten from Home Depot has died. Plus the local nursery has a much better selection.

I agree with Lowe's being "warmer." They seem more oriented to the regular customer while Home Depot is catered more for contractors and industry professionals. I think thats why Home depot workers ignore you, they expect people to already know what they're looking for.

These days I like to count my money. I like to wash it delicately and iron it. Sometimes I dry it with some bounty to make it all nice and cuddly. I love my money... did I say that out loud?

Funny this should come up, I just bought a house and so I've been in both of them at least once a day since then!

For me, I go to Lowes because it's closer, but then it also closes earlier so after that I go to HD...

Also, i make the boy push me around in the cart when we go and the carts are more comfortable at Lowes!

Other. I go to a 'green' building supply store whenever possible, and otherwise prefer local independent suppliers, assuming they have what I want. Home Depot &etc are last choice.

Yeah, ethically it is not great... but when my roommate and I were renovating her apartment the Home Depot walked us through step by step for all sorts of crap. We actually called them at one point when we were installing the cabinets and they spent about 20 minutes on the phone explaining shit. I thought they were nice. I'm not sure if we have a Lowe's here; we never tried.

Ebay... for $18-$25, you can get 2-5 20% off coupons that are good for purchases up to $2000. Since we're finishing a basement and remodeling our house, those bad boys have more than paid for themselves with only our first purchase.

Chrissy, you are right on all counts about Lowe's versus HD. I just wish Lowe's was closer to my house.

Hey, a bunch of chicks talking about home improvement stores - is that cool or what? My mom would be proud of us.

LOL! I had to edit my post because I had a typo and left out the "o" in "counts".

Lowes all the way. Sometimes I forget and go to the HD, but them I spend the whole time either having to explain in great detail what I need because they don't understand, or being harassed by Mr. Sexist because heavens forbid I know what I need. In fairness I am usually looking for costume or theatre supplies (tape, tin snips, wire, etc), not home improvement stuff. Though when I wanted to make a plant shelf over my radiator Lowes were my people. HD kids looked at me blankly.

Zabrina, you nailed it. it's got the contractor-ey vibe. that's what it is about HD, for me.

Scarlett, where can i find out if we have green stores here? is there a registry or something that i can look up? i tried "green supplies philadelphia" but i got a shitton of results, none that helped.

    Love it!

    Ace Hardware FTW!

But I used to work at an Ace. LOL Still, they're great, and they stock Benjamin Moore paint. Best paint EVAR hands down. I still love them.

We have a contractor friend and he uses his discount at "contractor only" places and gets the best stuff.

For paint, it's either HD or Lowe's. Depends on who has the color and price we want.

I like them both. I've had really good experiences at both places and when we were remodeling our condo, the people at both HD and Lowe's new me by name. I was in there all the time buying/returning/exchanging things. There are still people there who remember my name. LOL

For appliances, we hit a high end store in Merchandise Mart. They sell the Sub-Zero and all. I hate going into that store...makes me want to constantly redo my kitchen.

I think we had better experience with the paints at Lowes...don't know where an Ace is, off the top pf my head. I'll go to either...I loooooove the way that hardware stores smell. As much as, if not more than, Wilson's Leather. *sniiiiff* Ahhhhhhhh...

Wow, I totally agree with your assessment of Home Depot! And in every other store it's "are you finding everything okayyyy" 5 times, but there's never anyone around in HD, and I need help there the most!

I go to mom and pop shops first to see if they have what I'm looking for, but so far it's been for less major things than entire DIY home jobs.

Other. My family does contracting, so when we need stuff we go through them. Otherwise, I go to my local, family-owned and operated hardware store for supplies and Sear for tools.

Lowes. My brother in law works there, so I show him what I need and he gets it for me. Most of the time, he doesn't ask for the money back. What can I say, I'm spoiled.

He gave us a $100 GC for Xmas one year, so we ended up getting a dishwasher for like $80. Last one they had, on clearance, and it was the floor model. That was a deal!

Normally Lowes. They are way more customer-friendly.

HD if Lowes doesn't have something I need someting something kind of "standard" that I want to grab quickly.

All tools come from Sears. I threw away a lot of junk tools before I started buying all Craftsman!
