Thumbs up Hip Chicks Do Wine

I just had a really wonderful day - shopping for fresh produce, a stop at Trader Joe's, a trip to the spa for steam and sauna with a foot bath and clay face mask - and on the way home I passed . I've passed this sign several times and wondered what that was all about, but today I gave into the impulse and stopped in to investigate.

I was expecting a wine store. I found a small boutique winery instead; they make all the wine from raw grapes right there. It's a couple of butch lesbians and their seven-year-old son, tons of large barrels, and a small tasting area. They'll sample four wines for free or you can try several for a $5 tasting fee, so I ponied up a fiver and went with the full tasting.

Well, this place is TERRIFIC. It's some of the best wine I've ever had and it beat the hell out of several wineries in Sonoma County. The Private Reserve Syrah ($42) actually gave me goosebumps up my arms and legs. I bought the Bad Girl Blanc ($12, best chardonnay ever, not acidic or woody at all) and the Whole Berry Cabernet ($18, fermented in the grapes with no crushing, so deliciously fruity without being sweet). They ship everywhere so I thought I'd pass this on for the benefit of anyone who loves good wine!

I'm so jealous! I. Hate. Eugene. (and I rarely use the word hate)

I'll be in PDX at the end of the month. I'll definitely have to check out that shop. Have you had a chance to shop at Hot Box Betty yet? That's a cool little boutique. For some of the best second hand clothes check out Red Light Clothing Exchange. The local film industry gets it vintage clothing there. I could spend hours just trying on clothes from that store.

I'm glad you like your new home.

No, I haven't been there yet! Haven't done any clothes shopping at all, but I need to.

We must go to Hip Chicks Do Wine (and wherever else) when you come up. If you need a place to stay, mi casa es su casa. Looking forward to seeing you again.

I'm just so blown away by this wine, wow. Every Oregon wine I've had has been sugary and syrupy (typical for cold-climate grapes in my experience). I mentioned that while I was there today and they said they do an extra step to avoid processing their grapes with that much sugar still in them. I've never had such a pleasant, non-astringent chardonnay in my life and I can't believe it came from Oregon grapes. Can't wait to crack open that cabernet either... I didn't get a chance to try it, but based on my favorites at the tasting the lady there was confident I'd love it. She said if I didn't, I could bring it back for a refund and she'd drink it, LOL!

Their son even gave me a heart-shaped sucker for Valentine's Day. Heh. Nice place!

And here I goes to check it out, even though I do kind of like really sweet wines...

They have good sweet ones too. I tried the Wine Bunny Blush and the Belly Button Wine, both sweet and slightly desserty but not sugar-syrupy like muscat or cheap reisling. I wouldn't want to drink a whole bottle by itself since IMO they were too sweet for that, but either would be really pleasant on a warm evening on the patio with some crackers and cheese.

Awesome. My trip to Portland is definitely including a stop here. I've become such a wine snob lately.

That's awesome! I love a good chardonnay. I'll have to check this place out when I visit Portland.

Thanks Yek! I was actually about to start pumping you guys up for info on wines that are under $25 that don't leave you with that wine-headache. $25 seems to be the minimum price for a bottle I find that doesn't give me headaches, but that's a lot for all the times I feel like drinking wine! hehe.

I'm gonna "support local" bc sometimes my mind lives in Oregon, and that's local.

I love syrah! And I love your enthusiasm for Portland. I've become sort of immune to all the wonderful little things to check out here. I definitely have been curious about HCDW. It's about five minutes away from my house.

^^^ Ain't that always the way? I'm only just discovering all the cool things to do in Memphis because I'm showing it off for K. I never went to Interstate BBQ or the Stax Museum (two of the best things Memphis has to offer) until I needed to get him out of the 'burbs and into town.

But Portland is just so full of these terrific little spots. Every time I go anywhere I find some adorable little place tucked away where I'm not expecting it. Last week K and I went out and met the real Ned Flanders in person - he owns this bizarre little dollar store on Hawthorne called the Dollar Scholar.

Alexxa - I LOVE your location!

    Sxy :

They don't . No wineries can ship here. You can thank the backwards Utah laws for that. I am often in North CA and used to bring my wine back on the plane . That was back when you could have liquids over 3 ounces on the damn plane ( inside with you so they didn't have to ride below with your clothes in luggage). Needless to say, my reserve is running quite low.

Next time I need to stock up , I will be investing in one of those padded boxes that holds either 6 or 12 bottles and putting this on the plane.

Now ..... the way that you could get around the silly law is to have someone pick up your wine with the padded box ( most wineries have these on site ) , and then ship it for you through UPS or other shipping place. Or .... if you have a friend in Wendover or just over the Idaho border, have it shipped there.

    Yek :
You are making me want to visit Portland too ! I have been lazy and have not been branching out with work related trips, but your posts are making me want to work / play in Portland for a weekend or more.

I know they aren't supposed to, but I know a few do, and ship it labeled as something else. Boo.

Is it a hassle to prove your age when getting alcohol shipped to you?

When I was young, my mother was on this make-your-own-wine kick... I have to say, I didn't like her wine made from grapes she bought at United. Maybe these Hip Chicks actually KNOW how to do it properly, but I'm wary of 'homemade' stuff..
