the book sucked until she had been working a while. and her overly precious writing calmed down a lot to reflect her own life change.

she was employed as a journalist, so i am not surprised she has a few screenplays lying around.

but she spent most of her strippertime supporting a married guy with a kid who was too 'laid back and chill' to divorce his wife for the bulk of her strippertime. and he was also too laid back to have a job for the duration of her stripping time (including when she quit her writing job to strip and support the guy and his kid full time). i find it pretty darned intriguing how that bit never comes up when her book is mentioned.

and he was a musician, too, i think, but the book is in a box, so i can't check.

I read it (very quickly) and thought it was a fun read. I love all types of stripping memoirs but then again, I am probably easily satisfied because I really enjoyed "Strip City" as well.

only through convenient omission I believe. I never remember hearing that he had a job, only that he was such a good father, spending time with his kid, being perfectly laid back and chill, hanging out with her after work bathside, being supportive and listening to everything.

Yes. I always thought it was odd when I was reading this. She seemed to be working nine hours a day at her journalist job and then stripping at nights as well. And she would go home and roll into bed at like 5:00am or something and get up and go to work again. I cannot remember her bf (Johnny?) ever having a job or at least not working nearly as hard as she was. Oh well . I just know this would drive me insane!

I think he had a job but he wasn't well-paid, and yeah, he was a musician... but raise your hand if you know more than one stripper supporting an underpaid musician boyfriend! They eventually did get married, although they got divorced a month or two ago. What a shame because they sounded awesome together.

Just because she was the breadwinner doesn't necessarily make him a deadbeat.

I really want to read this book now!! Don't we have a thread somewhere listing all the books about stripping? I think I'd like to read most of them.

also, i forgot to add the trifecta-bit-- she has 'johnny's girl' tattooed on her. which is now even more hilarious if they're actually divorced.

i guess for me, the bizarrely stereotypical aspects of her time in stripperville are the only interesting thing about her stripperbook.

ok, but the fact that he was married makes him a jerk.

Not necessarily, he was already separated. It's not like he was cheating on a loving wife behind her back or anything; they were in the process of divorce. My ex-husband and I were both dating again before our divorce was finalized.

I picked it up at B&N in the 4.98 bin the other day. Overall, yeah, her abuse of hyperbole and the whole "Oh, look how hip and counterculture I am, tee hee!" thing got old REALLY fast. I did like the term "Loserhosen" for guys in sweat/track pants. I found it confusing. She praised strippers one minute, then talked 19 types of shit the next. A fun quick read, but, bleh.

I did enjoy the book, it was very funny at times, but I didn't like her condescending attitude. Just because one has a college degree or day job does NOT make one an "unlikely stripper." Actually, thats at least half the strippers I know.
