    Default Epsom Salt

Here I am soaking my big toe in epsom salt water for an ingrown toenail and I don't know why!! I was told to, but I really don't know how it's going to make things better.

Someone, please tell me what is epsom salt and how does it work, what are the benefits?

salt is good at detoxing and disinfecting. not sure about ingrown toenail unless it's infected, but who knows. maybe it will soften everything up so you can clip the nail down.

I forgot: one time what I did was that i filed down the central part of my toenail on the premise that if the nail was too thick all over and pressing into the flesh that by weakening the central part a little bit, the two sides would push towards the center just a tiny bit and relieve the pain. I think it worked but it's been so long I don't know

I did a search on curezone and came up with a few posts:

"Beth...Try saturating the corner of the nail that's ingrown in castor oil...you
may need to put a bandaid around it...but make sure it stays saturated. That
should do it after a few hours. I've also heard Vit E oil will do the same thing.

Also...there's a drawing 'poultice' that works for splinters...and it may work
here if the above doesn't...dip a piece of bacon fat in turpentine...and lay it
across the ingrown nail...wrap that in a bandaid...that should bring it out also.

I've gotten some really deep splinters out over the years with the bacon fat and turpentine....even glass splinters.

    Good luck...kathryn"

    and

"I have had ingrown toe nails for as long as I can remember. I do not take my toes to the doctor. The only thing I have ever done that worked is to file down the thickness of the nail, on the part where it is ingrown. I use an emery board to do this. Once, I filed it too thin, and quite a bit was actually gone. When it finally grew back, it was almost normal !! I have also gotten temporary relief by jamming a small piece of cotton under the part of the nail where it in ingrown. I shove the cotton under there with a tooth pick at night, sleep with it, and take it out in the morning. I cut my toenails straight across and I do not cut them short...if I do cut them short, I will get a bad ingrown one for sure.

What does not work for me is to cut the nail in the part where it is ingrown. For me, it just digs in deeper when it grows back. It is tempting to do, because it does bring relief at that time. But the pain that comes when the thing grows back is not worth it.

    AND

"My husband had an infected, ingrown toenail. I told him to soak it in hot water with Epsom Salts . After that, he applied castor oil by soaking a cotton ball in CO and taping it to his toenail area with a bandaid. Today the infection is gone! No more throbbing, no redness, no pain."

I use epsom salt to soak in the bath when my muscles are sore from the gym and it works well.

I also used it to soak my fish in once to cure it of an illness - yes it worked!! But in small dose for the fish.

^^ I use it to soak too! It's great after a long night at work! Not sure about the toe though....probably to get rid of infection.
