Are you certified?
the oil rigs off of galveston (not mexico I know but might be an option for your check-in dive if you haven't done it yet.)
I'm a fan of Cozumel...both the diving and the island in general.
I didnt scuba, but I've been snorkeling in Cancun off Isla Mujer...gorgeous! I bet it would be even better if you can go deeper
Yay. Looks like I'm going on this trip with an ex of mine. She's busy looking into packages. The idea is for me to have my four "checkout" dives for scuba certification and hang with her (plus snorkel) the rest of the time. Mid March for 4 nights (on the off chance any SWers will be in the neighborhood).

Cozumel all the way! How deep are you certified to go?
My final exam is next week. Not even sure if we get back in the pool for that one.
But, anyhow, my recollection is that certification permits you to go to 30/40 feet. The maximum depth for recreational divers is 130ft, as you know. And down that far there isn't a lot of color or whatnot. I'm sure I'll be happy at 60ft and above.
Update: Got 48 out 50 on the final. So, I passed. Now looking at an end-of-March dive trip. Will be on the West Coast then anyhow, so am considering Sea of Cortez or Cabo or San Migel.
Suggestions welcome.
i just snorkled in Cabo about 4 months ago, we were about a 1/2 mile off shore, it was amazing! i can only imagine going deeper!!! i couldn't scuba i smoke too much, i almost died snorkling after only an hour!!!!

Damn.. always wanted to try scuba. My BF is certified, but I'm worried about the pressure in my ears. Anyone tried SNUBA? LOL. It's like a mix of snorkel, scuba. The tank floats on top of the water, I think.
I have the exact same worry. Interestingly, the physics of "air spaces" and pressure mean that once you get past 15 or 20 feet, it's easier to equalize, or so they say.
I think I'll be okay.
Plus, you're taught never, ever, to force yourself to decend. In fact, you're supposed to start equalizing before you feel any discomfort, and stop at depth if you feel any (nobody wants to pop an ear drum underwater or otherwise--this will also end your dive trip).
