Default DX ladies... recommend someone to help wtih my taxes?

So i bought turbotax but its not working right.

Its weird for me since i'm a parttime resident in two states, and i dont know where what income gets claimed or taxed, and is generally a mess.
I must be doing something wrong. Everyone i know is getting refunds, and its telling me i owe thousands. Like WTF?

I seriously think i'm going to just scratch the idea of using the software, at least this year, and just go to someone. SO who do you guys trust?

for starters, you have to pick one state as your 'tax residence'. This is usually the state where you spent the greatest number of days / where you maintain an apartment etc.

Do your federal return first, filing all of your dancing income and dancing related tax deductions on Schedule C.

Then do your state return for the state that is your 'tax residence'.

Then do a non-resident tax return for the other state.

At this point, turbotax will start to alter your resident state tax return to reflect credits for taxes due to the second state.

Also, since your are self-employed, if you earned a fair amount of money and if you did not send in estimated tax payments every three months throughout last year, it is indeed possible that you owe thousands.

Keep in mind that in all probability the 'friends' who are getting tax refunds are considered to be 'employees'. This means that their 'employer' pays 1/2 of their Social Security and Medicare tax, whereas a self-employed person must pay all of it. This also means that their 'employer' automatically withheld from their paychecks and sent into the IRS weekly estimated tax payments throughout last year, where a self-employed person must do this themselves (or pay it all in one lump at the end of the year).
