I know that there is a bit of interest regarding some of the more well known NYC clubs.. and as someone who work 3-5 nights a week at Hustler, can I just say...
I watch our GM audition girls nightly. Now, I've seen auditions as someone already hired at whatever club, and been auditioned myself at numerous clubs.
I have said it before, and I'll say it again.. I DO think Chris is a very good manager. he has his flaws, but I've worked at Scores East, and a brief stint at PEC, and I favor his management style second to none.
The audition process at Hustler is this:
No set times
Girls walks up to doorman, shows ID, says "I want to audition."
Girl is escorted upstairs to DR.
Chris sits there, smoking a cigarette and says "ok, go get undressed, come back in heels and thong."
Girl does this.
Chris looks her up and down (in brightly lit DR) and says "ok, go get dressed and talk to the house mom."
while girl is getting dressed, he looks at house mom and either a)shakes his head "no," or b) says "so and so, she's good."
If she's a no, house mom simply says "ok sweetie, fill out this application, and we'll keep you on our waiting list." If she's "in", she starts going over everything about the club, etc.
My point is, I always play a little game in my head when I see a girl start this process of "Will she or won't she?"
I almost almost NEVER RIGHT!
I see Asians come in that I would never ever believe he would turn down, get turned down and then overly thick more ethnic (pls ladies don't get on me for that, I'm simply going on what NYC clubs generally hire, it is not a personal opinion in any way) girls get shown the red carpet.
This happens over and over again. And it's not just the above scenario, it's every scenario similar..
What does NYC really want? I am TRULY bewildered.. Everyone (including myself) seems to believe that NYC management is looking for a certain type, yet Hustler is DEFINITELY working it's way up the food chain, and still seems to be hiring (i.e. Chris is hiring) a very different look than the stereotypical barbie girl. I believe Chris does know what he's doing, he's been there a long time.. And the club is very big on promoting a typical "upscale, big deal club" typa image.. So.. are "upscale" clientèle leaning towards a different demographic of dancer than they were believed to in the past? What is going on? It is NOT that I have a problem with this!! It's just that it interests me..
Btw - to everyone: in no way is this meant to be insulting, or even to be my own opinion.. It's simply an observation I've made based on what everyone, including SW's opinion of a typical NYC dancer vs. who I am watching being hired and desired by management at the club I work at.
