    Default Your Happy Weight

There was an article in this month's self magazine, on They explained the difference between "ideal weight" (which may not be attainable, or may only be attainable by sacrificing enjoyable foods and activities) and "happy weight" (which may not be perfect but which is still beautiful, healthy, and happy).

There's a calculator on there, so I did mine. Charts and medical stuff all put my ideal weight at 110-115 since I'm 5'1", but I've long known that's bullshit because I've been within that range and I had bones sticking out everywhere. According to this calculator, my happy weight is 121, which I can reach with moderate exercise and generally healthy eating and the occasional splurge. I'd definitely look great and be fit at that weight.

Did anyone else do this up? What do you think? Is there a huge difference between your ideal weight and happy weight? They gave the numbers on several other women and it was interesting to see where everyone's reality and self-perception lined up.

I'm 5'2'' and my happy weight was 118.2 pounds which I am very happy with being. I look good at this weight too and am quite slim.

In my head, my ideal weight is always 112 pounds though.

That's interesting, Jade. I couldn't even imagine weighing 92 pounds though, aigh! Even my anorexic friend at 15 weighed more than that!

Just to add though, I hardly ever weigh myself. I'm at my happy weight when a certain pair of jeans fit me well, but I'm not exactly sure what that weight is.

I'm at 114 right now. that put my happy weight at 108. But I seriously objectively look best at 105ish. any where from 103-108 really. I'm glad my ideal is realistic.

But I'm not trying to loose weight, it makes me depressed.

So approximately what do you weigh right now, Jade?

I haven't weighed myself in awhile, but I weigh about 130-135. I definitely want to lose 10 or 15 pounds but I'm not going to kill myself to do it. I just need to squeeze in an extra 30 minutes of cardio a few times a week and stay away from the crispy fried stuff, and hopefully I'll get down to 120 by the time swimsuit season rolls around.

Said my happy weight was 133.
I currently weigh 133 and have cellulite and hate myself.

My personal happy weight would be 125. I weighed that last year and loved it. I was thin and toned and sexy, but didn't look sick or to thin.

My happy weight is 144.3. I weigh 128 lbs (ish), and considering my body has sat within 5 lbs of this weight since puberty, I think 144 is a bit high for me.

I tried making myself bigger and my working out less and everything... and the max I could get was 114...and I haven't been 114 since I only ate grapes and drank orange juice for two years when I was 13.

UGH.... What do they want from me?

I am VERY MUCH calculated by my muscle mass. It didn't even take that into consideration. It makes your goal weight LESS if you work out MORE? WHat if you do Weights?! Then you SHOULD weigh more if you work out More.... DUH.

I will be at my happy weight when I reach size 6. I have weighed the same forever, but I have gone down from a size 10/11 to a size 7/8. Fuck it ! if I look like I weigh less than I do, I am not going to say shit about my weight.

Okay, yeah, not going by this....

    happy weight: 121.6
    ideal: 108-145

I weigh 112. I like myself best between 108 and 110. I go over 115 and it starts showing(not just to me, others notice it), in a bad way. Me at 120, would look fat. But i also have a very slim frame.

I almost never weigh myself for this exact reason. If my "skinny" jeans fit, or my "skinny" dress for work fits, I'm good.

I'm 5'4" and about 115 lbs. My happy weight is 126. I am content with my weight.. I'd prefer to be around 110... but 126 is definitely too high for me.

Yeah right. According to that my happy weight is 140.2. Thats close to what I normally am and I hate it and get called fat all the time. Ideally I'd like to be @120...but unless I go back to being hard core anorexic or start doing a lot of drugs I dont see that happening. I already work out and barely eat. 140 is my " it's cool..I LIKE big girls" weight. Bleh

^^^ Sounds like your "happy weight" is really about 130 then.

I got up to 145 last year (I'm 5'1") and I really felt gross. Thought I'd look better at 130. I do, but I'm still a bit squishier than I'd like and since I don't tan, I look jigglier than most (the only thing I hate about being pale). I feel pretty good about my body most of the time but lately I've just been feeling jiggle and squish everywhere and it makes me sad.

Lysondra, you're really muscular and athletic, which makes anything that's BMI or scale based inaccurate for you. Your measurements are a far more accurate gauge of your true body size, and they are a lot smaller than measurements of women who weigh much less than you.

The 'happy weight' they put for me (124) is one at which some people call me a bigger girl and some say I look good (mostly my mother, who likes the meat on the bones look). How I feel at that weight depends partially on how much muscle I have at it, but I tend to think I look best much lower, as in general I don't carry a whole lot of muscle, even if I'm working out. My genetics don't let me build it easily, so I tend to look flabby if my weight's that high, particularly around the hips and thighs. However, the 'happy' thing about that weight, for me, is that it's very easy to maintain without doing all that much. So, while I might not like the way I look at it, I do like the fact that I don't have to think about maintenance as much. That's not worth walking around in a body I feel uncomfortable with, I tend to think, but I won't say it's not a benefit.

My happy weight is 132. I already weigh 6 pounds over that and I wanna loose a few more. I'm not convinced by this calculator.

According to the calculator: My happy weight is 115, and my ideal is between 103-138 (big damn range).

My happy weight is pretty accurate, I really want to be back between 105-110. I'm currently around 120, which makes me very curvy, curvier than I'd like. I'm only 5'2.5

I know you're right flickad... but seeing a weight heaps below my own weight and it telling me I'd be happiest at that weight still makes me feel like I'm big. I know I'm not. I know I'm thin. I know all this and yet seeing these numbers of people who say they're fat at my weight or that I can't POSSIBLY be happy being as 'large' as I am when I am full of muscle and almost no fat (14% I think?).. just seeing the numbers, y'know? Makes me self concious.

And it seems it's not just me... a lot of the girls here see that and go.. wait... my weight should be ten pounds less?

    *sigh*

Why do things like this only tell you how much you should weigh?

If I weighed 107 like it wanted, I'd be sick and bony. But, apparently, happy.
