Default Is there a logical reason why people

can't accept the fact that there are certain items of clothing that flatters a persons body shape and some items don't? On another board this discussion for a site that helps people dress according to their body shape and teaches what is something that will flatter the shape

Now of course as in anything else there will be peopel who see this as a completely different issue and the issue in this case was seeing "flaws" as something that is a bad thing. Due to the wonderful education lesson I received here about symmetry and what is appealing to the human eye I decided to have and add a logical explanation about it really isn't pointing out that you should be ashamed of yourself at all, that it's just that certain things look attractive and others don't, for example, in MY opinion this is not attractive at all...

And the reaction was "But the point is, *why* do we think it is unattractive? What influences us to think it is unattractive? Clearly it's not innate - there are cultures where the more body fat is shown off, the better."

Now I believe that there is nothing wrong with that persons body, the problem is that when you take something squishy and squeeze in certain areas, things will over flow, fat will distribute causing that effect.

Anyway I was just wondering what is your take on this?

From what I've read, cultures where fatter is appealing tend to be those where food is scarce (not a problem in ours). I'd say the girl in the pic just doesn't have good ?sense? about what is appealing, or maybe she only saw it from the front, or maybe she can't afford a pair of jeans that fit, or maybe she has a self-image that sees this as attractive (I guess body dysmorphic disorders can both ways, and range from very mild to very severe; this might be a very mild case of positive self image, not necessarily a bad thing )

I think people need to dress for their bodies and thats not to say theirs anything wrong with their bodies. I'm pretty thin and if I wear jeans that are too small they give me mufrfin top too and it looks like shit, so I don't wear them. I don't get how that girl looked in the mirror and went "daaammmnnn I look hot". I suppose thats why shows like "what not to wear excist" some people just don't get it.

i don't appreciate you taking pictures of my back like that...
These days I like to count my money. I like to wash it delicately and iron it. Sometimes I dry it with some bounty to make it all nice and cuddly. I love my money... did I say that out loud?

I never said there was anything wrong with this person, just that the choice of clothing was poor for the body type.

Ahh...Dunlap Syndrome. Maybe when she put them on they fit right, but they just happened to get this pick right after she ate a 12-egg omelet and a whole cheesecake?

I really don't get it. Above all aesthetics, isn't that uncomfortable??? You'd think it would hurt. My jeans don't do anything near that to my waist, but they're still a little snug and even that is uncomfy. Plus when they're too tight I get bad gas.

Yes, yes, yes! And that's pissing me off about fashion these days. Much of it is unflattering to me. Those tent dresses don't show off my sweet curves. And my curves are real curves, not fat that I call curves.

Dress for the body you have, not the body you want. I hate that look! And I agree, it's gotta be uncomfortable.

A girl at work was doing research for a paper on plastic surgery and appearance. One of the questions was do you think that Hollywood has an affect on societies appearance. I think yes and no. It seems a lot of people try to dress like the rich and famous but they don't have the body for it. It seems that there are more overweight people than before in this coutry.

I still do not see the problem in wanting to look good or having a guide in letting people know what looks flattering and what does not. Is it insecurity? why is it seen as an attack to the physical appearance? As I looked through the century, fashion and trends pretty much dictate what is hip or what is just not acceptable.

Again people can wear what ever the hell they want, it's their body, their money and how they choose to invest in in clothing and on their appearance, but the question is how do we determine what is appealing and what is not? better yet, how do you determine that?

Clothes, for the most part, are binding. I bet she doesn't look bad naked. She probably looks half decent, and I can go out on the street and find 20 people that look worse than her. To me, seeing skin all bound up and hanging over jeans doesn't turn me on because it takes what would look great au naturale, and binds it into a sausage casing with what doesn't quite fit right hanging out of the ends. When you're sitting and look at the top part of your thigh, it looks smooth and nice. When you straighten your leg and take your hands and push your thigh down, it makes bulges and maybe cellulite. Smooth, flowing lines are attractive to me. Even on a larger person they're sexy if you don't bind them up. It causes the eye to get caught up and focus on the sloppy parts.

Seriously...when I dont fit in my skinny jeans..guess what?? I DONT WEAR THEM. Forget what other people think..I dont feel sexy when I have a muffin top. If that means I have to wear a size 5 or 7 that day instead of a 3 or 4...so be it. People notice if you look fat...they dont notice what number is on the size label.

Here in America, land of the plenty..I think looks, like everything else here, is all about control. If you can be skinny with a Taco Bell and a million pasta restaurants every 5 feet....then you are in control. If you are fat...you arent. (Not that I believe this....well, not for anyone else but myself) Its a theory...but IMO..its why skinny=attractive here while skinny would mean unattractive in other countries

Sometimes people try to dress younger or thinner even though they aren't. I think some people think if they squeeze themselves into clothes like a sausage, it will make them look thinner, when it actually does the opposite. But, I have to say I'm guilty. I've been losing weight lately, and I'm not buying any new clothes that fit. So all my pants are literally falling off, I know half my town has seen my thong/ass crack in the last few weeks. And I look so frumpy because the legs don't touch any skin past the top of my ass, I'm literally swimming in all my pants. I'm not proud of it, because it looks like shit. But I don't want to spend money on clothes that aren't gonna fit in a few months. When I think the weight loss has stopped, then I'll worry about it. Not that that makes it okay, but oh well...

^^ Not that anyone asked, but I'd rather see a bag lady than someone who looks like a balloon with rubber bands around it. It sounds cruel to say that but my fattest was 285lbs, and I never dreamt of wearing something that would accentuate my biggest features.

Good points, I said in the other board that a shirt like this would look better and with a jean that actually fits.

To look sexy in the streets in my opinion it does not mean a person has to wear a mini skirt and thong showing.

^And who's looking sexy in the streets?! Usually, when I'm running errands, I couldn't care less who thinks I'm sexy. Occasionally, there will be a nice blouse or a little make-up done, but that's it.

That sounds dressed up to me! Always shorts and a hoody.

No mama, I mean at times people try to look sexy, very attractive but have poor choice of clothing for the body type is all I'm saying.

When I was in PR this past Christmas I was in Walgreens, as I was looking for diapers I saw this woman who must of been in her 50's and about 45 lbs over weight with a tank top, a mini skirt that you could see the crack of the butt from the back and ass cheeks coming out from the bottom with sneakers. I said "damn she must be really confident, I wish I had that confidence" but also thought, why? the woman was not ugly, at all, but I was thinking perhaps she wants to look younger and appealing to men but how many men are actually thinking "she's hot"

The jeans, and a T-shirt cropped just enough to let the love handles hang out, look seemed to be very prevalent among the young girls at the local mall last summer. So it's not just one girl who doesn't have fashion sense, it seems to be a trend.

That, and low-rise jeans with high rise thongs, so when they sit down you see a lot of the back of the thong. (As a guy, I feel like I ought to find that sexy, but I don't...it's just ugly and unkempt. Maybe it's because it doesn't look like it's on purpose, I don't know.)
