    Mom's: Post-Baby Period Questions

Sorry if this is TMI, but I got my first period this past Monday after having my first baby (12/19/07). I bled for about a month after having him and now this. At first it was super light, then on Tuesday it was awful! Now it is Friday and it's still very heavy...but no clots or anything that I should be alarmed about. The cramps have lessened as well. But it sucks dancing when it's this bad so I am taking the weekend off.

Is this at least somewhat normal? Is this period going to last awhile? Also, is this how my periods are going to be in the future??

Sorry if these are stupid, I am a new mom and kinda clueless!! TIA!

Gosh, I don't know. I breast fed so I didn't get my period for a while, and when I did it was all normal.

Maybe without the breastfeeding the uterus hasn't returned to it's original size or something? I really don't know. There are some smart girls on here though, hopefully they'll have some info for you.

Sorry you're going through that, it sounds crappy.

It has only been 5 days yet though, so that isn't too abnormal for a period.

Thanks for your reply ~ I feel so miserable because of the bleeding. Now I am wishing I breastfed for more than a month!!

I can feel ya, I'm having the same thing right now (my first 12/24/07). I got so worried about it I called the OB, evidently this is a normal thing for some women. He said that each period should lessen in severity.

Oh and kudos to you for having the body to already go back to work. I still have a small pooch and some hips to work off first. I've actually been hitting the gym consistantly for the first time in my life. I'm so jealous and congrats on the new little one!

Whew ~ thanks! I was thinking about calling my OB but since it's Saturday morning I would have to wait. I feel better knowing I am not the only one, sorry to hear you're having the same issue.

It's nice being back at work! I needed the break in monotony. My body is almost back to normal, just a few 'issues' here and there (like my thighs...how the hell did that happen!!).

    Congrats to you as well!!!

I breastfeed my son still (he's 14 months) and I got my period back (while I was exclusively BF'ing him) when he was 5 months. With my daughter, I exclusively BF'ed her and got my period back 3 days after my Post Partum bleeding stopped.

It's all about hormones, etc. Each woman is different. I found that my periods AFTER my daughter were much heavier (shorter duration) than before. After my son they weren't as heavy as before I had him, but they were a day longer.

    I wouldn't worry about it.

    It's pretty normal.
A ton of women find thier periods are different after having a child/children.

Wouldn't be worried. My first few periods after birth, were a bit heavier. I think it's just the bodys way of getting back to normal..there was a lot of extra stuff going on down there for 9 months!

I just got my first postpartum period last month (baby came 8/9/07) and it was pretty heavy the second and third days and all but stopped the 4th and 5th days, then I bled a little for the 6th and 7th, then it was gone. Really weird, because my periods are usually 7 days of moderate to heavy bleeding. My point? Pretty much anything can be considered "normal" because every woman's body is different. If you're super concerned, you could call the OB just to be sure!

I just got my first postpartum period a few weeks ago. Baby born 9/30/07. The first 2 days were super heavy than it just lightened up and by day 4 was all but gone.Your situation doesn't seem too unusual.

I'm glad you weren't offended by my first post! I had ment to edit it so it didn't come across the way it sort of did - it was assuming that you didn't BF and that maybe it was a cause - I really didn't mean it like that, I was just ramblin'. Anyway, hope all is well with you and your baby and you're getting good sleep at night!

I remember having to wear those HUGE maxi pads! I bled heavy and hard. I also remember that standing up hurt alot too because of all the pressure of pushing her out. Ouch!

Thanks so much ladies! It's better today, still annoying..but I am taking the rest of the weekend off anyway. If it gets worse I'll call my OB but it seems fine.

Sorry, I am a new mom and freaking out about everything.

    Oh, don't worry...I wasn't offended at all!

As far as lots of sleep...yikes. Not too bad now but it seems I am always exhausted. Meanwhile my hubby seems to enjoy his 8-10 hours of uninterrupted sleep at night...lol...

    Hope you are getting rest!!
