    Default antidepression meds/ED's

So my psychologist wants to refer me to a Dr/Psychiatrist to put me on antidepressants for my eating disorder. it's apparently supposed to help since eating disorders are in part caused by an imbalance w/ brain chemicals.
what antidperessant meds worked best for you all that i could consider? btw prozac has had a bad rap in my family.

    thanks

women's liquid health multivitamin, 5-htp, flax seed oil, bragg's liquid amino's.

not an antidepressant, but certainly works that way for me.

Umm...I tried Lexapro when my ED was really bad and it didn't help me, but valium made me chill out enough to eat.

Prozac had a bad rap in my family too but it worked wonders for me. I took it for about 6 years. Now I am on Zoloft because pf pregnancy and BF-ing and that seems to be working great so far. Been on it since last August, 50 mgs once a day. It also helps me with my panic attacks...very rarely do I have one now. No side effects either.

I was put on zoloft for my ED in 2003, and it didn't work, but apparently it does in some cases.

I've been on pretty much every SSRI anti-depressent commonly prescribed, and had results varying from them just not working to them making me worse to allergic reactions. BUT, that's just me, and everyone reacts differently to medication. SSRI's don't work for me, but they do for A LOT of people. No one really understands everything about these medications or why they work sometimes on some people but not others, so often it's a process of trial and error. What I will say is that if one doens't work for you, don't write them all of, it can be frustrating, but when you find one that works it's amazing.

If you're bulimic, you may want to ask about Wellbutrin. It's commonly prescribed for people who have anxiety issues as well as depression, and it has a bit of an appetite supressing effect to it.

DON'T TAKE EFFEXOR! I cannot stress this enough. Many doctors will not even prescribe it anymore as it has THE WORST withdrawl symptoms of any SSRI. Comming off it is AWFUL, and there are lots of alternatives.

Also, I know that often in ED inpatient programs they give you Seroquel, which is a medication prescribed for bipolar disorder, but it helps people with severe EDs.

I've had a lot of experience with this stuff, so if you have any other specific questions, feel free to PM me.

    Good luck with getting healthy!

It's VERY hard for others to say what's going to be right for you - antidepressants and other psych drugs work differently for everyone - but my dad happens to be a psychiatrist and I know he generally has great things to say about Cymbalta. It can be tough for the first few months (as with ALL antidepressants - they take time to work the way they're meant to, so if initially things aren't going as you planned, make sure to stick it out for a little while to let them do their thing), particularly with nausea and headaches, which are the most common initial side-effects. I've also heard that Wellbutrin is usually pretty good. Both Cymbalta and Wellbutrin are used for depression as well as anxiety disorders, and both have very low risk of sexual side-effects in women (men are just kinda SOL when it comes to sex and anti-depressants though, bless 'em).

Basically, I'd make sure to have a very thorough discussion about all the possible meds and their uses and side-effects with your psychiatrist and see what he recommends. As others have said, it's usually a trial-and-error process so you may not get it right the first time! And just because Prozac hasn't worked well for your family, don't count it out - these things tend to be very personal and even family history doesn't account for much.

OH! And if money is an issue and you're considering generics - just remember that when it comes to psych drugs, generics can be a problem. The dosage and potency levels aren't very well regulated, so while I'm a HUGE spokesperson for generic drugs in general, when it comes to psych drugs I'd stick with the name brands.

I take Paxil CR 12.5mg daily in addition to 0.5mg Xanax up to 6 times daily no more than 3 full mg's a day.

It's working for me for my depression, and the xanax is helping chill me out but other than that, I dunno about any others.

Sorry I can't be more help!

I've tried them all and Wellbutrin is the only thing that's helped at all. With it food just isn't the issue that it once was. It's something I only think about when I'm hungry. I've struggled with bulimia/anorexia since early childhoodso this is a revelation for me. A freedom I never thought could exist.

Oh and as a bonus it helps with migranes for some.

I did notice that Prozac seemed to lessen my urge to binge and it's been prescribed for that reason to others. So meds can be a good idea for people that are bulimic or have some sort of overeating issue.

I think most of the studies of results of giving meds to anorexics that I've seen have not been promising though.

There is an ED thread in member boards so it would probably be a good idea to ask over there as I believe several members have been on vacation.

I took prozac for about a month. It made me really hyper and loud. I had to get off it and am now just scarred to try any new meds.

first of all, the actual cause of eating disorders is unknown. there are many different factors that come into play and depression could be one of them but that's not always the case. depression is an illness that is distinct from an eating disorder (of either type). i am an intern at an eating disorder unit at a hospital and when the psychiatrists prescribe antidepressants they're prescribing for depression and anxiety--not the eating disorder. this is because many of our patients with eating disorders often have depression and/or anxiety in addition to an eating disorder. as of now there is no "pill-cure" for one.

what is your eating disorder if u dont mind me asking?

i am bulimic and i find that ssri's do not help at all with my symptoms. however in my case i have been on ssri's for a lot longer than i have had an ED so that may be in part why i dont notice any changes - i developed bulimia after being on ssri's for anxiety for years (I don't think they caused it or had anything to do with it).

No med's helped with my ED. My family did, however (or, maybe it was just MY situation). I believe that there are different reasons and triggers for every individual ED. I'd rather not get into my situation, but for others, I don't believe that the solution is something along the lines of, "Don't worry, be happy!" I'm hoping that your psychologist is looking for a quick fix for the sake of your health while s/he delves into the real issue at hand.
