Default What did you give up for Lent this year?

For any of us that celebrate Lent...just curious, what did you give up?

You could say that I've given up meat, but then again, I ALWAYS give up meat. It's literally been 10 yrs since I ate red meat, so I don't think the no-meat thing counts for me LOL. THat said...

I decided to give up driving to work for lent. It's a lot quicker to drive to work, BUT it costs a lot more plus it contributes to increased traffic + pollution problems + the gas crisis. I've decided that I will only drive my car to the bus stop(the bus stop is 0.75mi from my apartment, and I don't want to get myself sick again by walking that far in the cold winter weather), but from there I will take transit to work.

This no-driving thing ESPECIALLY pays off when I go to my club. The parking garage next to my club charges a "discounted" rate of $10 for employees, but $10 is still a rip-off. $10 is a small amount of money, but hey that adds up to about $90/month for me! Basically the parking fees eat up the entire waitressing/shotgirl monthly paycheck(I get paid $2.83/hr - taxes) that I receive alongside my usual tips.

LOL so far I have been more committed to following through for Lent, than I was with my New Year's Resolutions!

So tell me your ideas for Lent!

Ok, this may not fly, but. I feel I've gone through enough of hard times that I shouldn't give up anything. Really.

I gave up jalapeno peppers. Boy and his dad were laughing at me last night when I mentioned it during dinner because it would be absolutely no big deal for them (their taste in food is kind of... um... bland), but I'm dying over here!

Yeah actually I can relate to this a bit. I went through more than my fair share of hard times a few years ago in 2005, during the whole Asian Tsunami natural disaster. All of these charities and groups were trying to collect money to help them out, and so were most people. I didn't give a dime, because during this time I was struggling enough to give myself necessities and nobody cared to help me out(this was during the time that my grandmother pressured my mom into kicking me to the street because I couldn't find a good-paying job despite trying). If anything, all people did was use my poverty as reason to discriminate, falsely accuse me of things, and to de-friend me. So don't worry, I hear you and I hope things are going better for you now.

LOL I can relate to this!! I LOVE spicy food, whether it's Mexican(with jalapeno peppers) or Indian(with their spicy curry). Actually, I just headed to the Mexican chain restaurant On the Border last night for their all-you-can-eat enchiladas special.

Don't worry, Lent won't last forever and then you'll be able to go back to spicy food in no time.

^^^ I seriously always go crazy with whatever I give up during Lent. One year, I gave up pickles. My boyfriend (who is not Catholic and does not give up anything for Lent) was counting down the days for me! He said was so neurotic and grumpy, he just wanted it to be over. At least I didn't give up all spicy food this year, though. I would seriously die without my shrimp in garlic sauce every Friday!

LOL here's a funny story...a few years ago, this guy I know gave up abstinence for lent. Yes, abstinence. He was very sexually frustrated because only a few months prior, he had just gotten out of a year-long relationship with a prude who refused to have sex with him...so it'd been well over a year since he'd gotten lucky. Then I started dating this guy. Well I guess God wasn't too happy with his choice for Lent, because the first time this guy did have sex again...he got me pregnant LOL.

So the lesson is, make sure you give up something God would approve of for Lent! E.g., don't be giving up "healthy food" or "exercise" or "peace" for Lent! Haha!

Hmmm I'm not a Catholic, but I am Episcopal(the closest thing to Catholic). My church mentioned Lent and Ash Wednesday in their services even though we're not Catholic...they even suggested a nearby Catholic church that was offering Ash Wednesday services. I am not overly religious, but I try to go to church on a somewhat regular basis. I started going there a few years ago after I had some tragedies occur and I needed to try and understand more about faith and the afterlife. My family overall isn't very religious at all(they haven't been to church in over 15 yrs! and that's considering that my youngest sibling is 16), so it's usually just me going to church...although I do like to drag my friend M--k along with me, since it might do some good for him eventually LOL.

I gave up my virtue. It's too bad seeing as I now have no redeeming qualities left...

Aww, you're sooo sweet, thank you dear!! I know, there's always worse off than me. I do have a bunch a clothes to donate, I have to get the time to get across time to get over to do so.
Usually, I try to give up sweets or chocolate, but if it's a case of me goin' off or eating those, I'll take the sweets

I'm a recovering catholic school girl!!! LOL!

This year (I think I mentioned this in another post) I gave up drinking at work. I figured it would reground my hustle, address anxiety issues, and teach me to not be such a lush.

Oh man you sound like my guy friend M--k...LOL.

Oh wait...M--k said he's actually giving up his gut for Lent. Thing is, he's not fat or anything. (M--k's too critical of himself)

I usually try and use Lent as an opportunity to give up something I'm getting a bit addicted to ie. chocolate, soda, coffee etc, but this year I honestly couldn't think of something that needed given up! So I guess I'll just continue loving all my vices in moderation.

My dear, sweet 14 yr old sister had a good idea though; what's she giving up? "Other peoples bullshit". Love it!

Gave up fast food for Lent.

It's not so bad in that I haven't gotten major cravings/withdrawals... but damn does it make life inconvenient! (kinda' the point of it all though, right?)

"In life, we DO a lot in order to accomplish mundane trivial things before we die, but it is in death and after death in memories that we will truly live, because it is in the level of care and detail that a person paints of us with stories from their memories and experiences with us that give us meaning."

    Gave up religion.
