Default skin care advice for early 20's

So I'm in my early 20's, and I've always had pretty decent and clear skin. Consequently, I pretty much do nothing to it except wash my face. I keep thinking I should take better care of my skin now so I don't regret it later. So what do I do? I'm especially interested because there's a lot of girls on here in their 30's who look great in the pic posts, etc. What did you do to your skin in your early 20's?

I'm still in my early 20s but I just graduated skin care school in October (Von Lee in Pikesville). You should get a professional facial once a month because they use professional and strong products to get a deep clean and exfoliation that you can't get in stores. They can also tell you what kind of skin type you have and what products you should be using.

Besides that, make sure you always remove your makeup and wash your face twice a day. Moisturize but every so often, skip out so your skin will still produce the oil on it's own and not depend on the moisturizer. Get a mild exfoliatant and use once or twice a week. Use a base under your foundation and always, always, always use sunscreen every day on your face of an SPF of at least 30. Anything under 30 isn't that effective. I think it's Neutrogena that makes a good SPF to wear everyday.

    Yep. Everyday single day too.
Clinique make a good facial sunscreen which has a matte finish and feels nice and light on the skin yet is a broad spectrum, high SPF sunscreen.

And iseestars has it right on too. Make sure you remove makeup, sunscreen etc, before you go to bed.

    Cleanse properly.
    Tone.
    Moisturise.

Exfoliate once or twice a week.

See somebody who can recommend specific products and analyse your skin professionally. Spend time and money because your skin has to last a lifetime. That being said however, not all good beauty products are expensive

I'm in my early 20s and need to start looking after my skin better. I have dry skin, and hardly ever break out. Can anyone recommend any specific brands to use?

Ellebelle - if you have dry skin, you want to use products without detergents in them. Flip over the back of the product and look at the ingredients. If it says something like sodium laurate (I think I spelled the last word wrong) or anything along those lines of "sodium," don't get it. Don't use a toner with alcohol in it and moisturize a few times a week but not twice a day because then your skin will depend on it and not try to start producing oil on its own. My mom used Oil of Olay and they have good products for dry skin.

a lotion or face cream is good for combating surface dryness. sunscreen will be your wrinkle prevention. that and keeping animated facial expressions to a minimum. the only topical that is scientifically proven to address wrinkles is a retinoid, preferably a prescription strength one.

I pretty much wash my face with water and a washcloth, but I have sensitive skin-I'm thinking of trying the oil method though as my face has become more oily/broken out lately. Cold cream to get the makeup off. Rare facials. Body shop scrub about once a month. Cetaphil w/ sunscreen every damn day. And body shop Vit e eye stuff often. I also only use face makeup for work. Maybe a little mineral powder or cover up on other days, if I break out.

A portrait in the attic to age for you doesn't hurt either.

Yes I am in love with Olay Total Effects ever since I forgot to bring my moisturiser when I went to visit my mum and borrowed some of hers. They don't market it towards younger women but I'm in love with it. It feels so good on my skin

    Maybe try this ellebelle?

Biore has a really good alcohol-free toner. I like to keep mine in the fridge. I don't know if it does anything special by doing that, but it feels oh-so-refreshing when I use it.

SUNSCREEN--however not all sunscreens have the right ingredients. you need a sunscreen that is SPF 30+. and it should contain a good UVA such as avobenzone, zinc oxide, or titanium.

    avobenzone 3%: solbar 30 PF gel, Neutrogena 55 w/ helioplex, Coppertone 50,

zinc oxide 8%: solbar zinc, vanicream 30 or 60

titanium oxide 9%: neutrogena 30 sensitive skin

i use Neutrogena 55 w/ helioplex. it's really light and non greasy.

    Moisturizing sunscreen, totally.

And make sure you keep the fragile skin around your eyes well-hydrated. Apply a good eye cream, baby oil gel, or Vaseline every night before bed. Never rub around your eyes and don't use an eye makeup remover that you have to scrub with. Use baby oil or baby oil gel to remove your eye makeup, and do it in one or two gentle swipes. The skin around your eyes is extremely delicate and it'll be the first thing to age you, so treat it like antique lace. You wouldn't scrub antique lace so don't scrub your eyes!

Drink lots of water, and green tea, and take Vitamin C, E, and folic acid. Don't smoke and stay out of the sun as much as you can. Sunscreen and moisturize.

I've heard that "sunscreen" doesn't count for much if it's in a lotion or make-up. I heard that it doesn't last as long... that it will come right off as your face produces oil. I'm going to try that Clinique recommendation because face sunscreen still feels too heavy to me for everyday wear (and I really should use it more).

^^^ Honestly, sunscreen will only get you so far. Better to stay out of the sun entirely. Wear a hat with a brim when you go outside in the sun, or at least large sunglasses to protect your eyes and minimize squinting. I know we have a lot of beach bunnies and tanners here, but UV rays are not your friend.

Another vote from me for sunscreen and avoid tanning in general unless it's of the self tanner variety.

Other than that I suggest drinking lots of water and limiting caffeine to a minimum.

Topical stuff like cleansers or moisture products is such an individual thing I can't really recommend anything particular except maybe if you live in a dry climate to use a gentle moisture cream twice a day.

yeah, this is good stuff I really like it. The 55 is better than the 65 imo (I have both) I just don't like the way the 65 feels on my face.

I've also had good results with Eucerin face lotion spf 30. That one is good for sensitive skin.

On my list to try is Shiseido spf 55.

Anybody know any good eye creams for someone in their 20's? I have a genetic problem with deep dark circles. The one eye cream that did the trick went out of business or something.

I'm using Arden's intervene that's supposed to be light anti-aging cream for people 25 and up....
