    Default Your thoughts/experiences on anti-depressants?

My doctor wants to put me on them, but I'm not sure if it will help. I've been having a very hard time focusing on tasks...a cloudiness/forgetfull/out to lunch sort of feeling, since Ive been out of college.

A doc may say one thing, but I'm looking for additional opinions from ppl who actually use them, you know?
I'm getting my Dial-A-Stripper service up and running again. If you are in NYC or NJ and are interested in private party dancing, email [email protected] with your SW handle, contact info, photo (if you have one) & best time to call and I'll get back to you asap.

The symptoms you have described do NOT sound like depression but maybe you have not explained it all?

I have been on several anti depressants (all of the SSRI variety which stands for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) so they work on your serotonin levels.
I have been on them since I was 14 and I am now 28. I wish i was never introduced to them because now I feel that I can never live without them.

Having said that, they are extremely helpful in treating clinical depression and anxiety in some people.

You also have to be aware of the side effects.

Please check the thread that I started here in body business about the side effects of SSRI's:

There are many stereotypes about the industry that I work in. Sometimes they can be true but human beings are very diverse creatures and cannot be pigeon-holed into one category.

Some of the most effortlessly beautiful, kind, intelligent, successful, motivated, driven and ridiculously hilarious women that I have ever met have been dancers. I've met the best friends that I've ever had in this industry.

Well I take three different pysch meds. I take prozac for depression and this particular anti-depressant does work. However, the side effects are what you need to look out for. Prozac takes away your orgasm and all sexual desire.
In my case, my other pysch med, puts it in overdrive and it balances out.
But if you were to take this alone you would not be able to errr... cum and it doesn't go away. But I dealt with the same thing forgetfullness, ect and it has helped me stay focus, feel better about myself and be more proactive in my day to day duties. The downfall with anti-depressants is that you have to find the one that works for you. I went through three different prescriptions before prozac. Some like Celexa ( I think that's what it's called) made me feel even worst, like suicidal worst girl, don't play...so ask your doctor about the side effects. You sometimes have to way your pros- and cons. Like would you rather be drowsy or eat alot, because some will make you feel like you just hit the blunt and have the munchies. If you do settle on prozac, inquire about counteracting meds and for the side effects which they sometimes have. Hope I helped! good luck

^ Unfortunately, even the best docs tend to be misinformed about the side-effects of antidepressants. They get into a prescription groove for certain meds and it's Pavlov's Dog with them.

Antidepressants are legendary for having wildly different effects on people. I have no idea how they ever did Stage III trials on these drugs because responses, side effects and tolerability are literally all over the map.

There are people who swear by SSRIs and others who swear at them.

If enough people contribute to this thread, you will see this diversity. There is simply no substitute for working your way through certain meds and finding what works for you.

I'm more concerned about your diagnosis, though. Nothing you've said in your post even remotely suggests depression unless there are things you've excluded. It sounds like you are much closer to being ADHD. Do you have the reasonable option of getting a second diagnosis?

I did leave some stuff out regarding my situation. I didnt want to bitch & moan about it, but basically everything Nikkie was saying; trouble completing day to stuff, huge lack of focus. Ive been going through this "mid-20's crisis stage" where I dont know where my life is going and I cant figure out a suitable career, forgetfulness, confusion ect ect ect. That problem has began to make me depressed. I couldnt take it anymore, so I decided to see a shrink. We discussed the antidepressant thing.

I am nervous about the meds though. Youre not really the same once you start taking them. Alternatives to medication like accupuncture and meditation are also things I want to explore before turning to drugs.

How old are you? Im 24, Im feeling that mid 20s crisis too lol.

Anyhow, I just recently started taking Zoloft for mild depression/social anxiety. But I have also felt that "forgetful" "spacey" feeling for a while now. Im not sure if that is from being mildly depressed or just situational, I think it has alot to do w/ being out of school and not keeping your brain focused any more you know what i mean?

My experience w/ zoloft? Well Im just on day 8 so I dont know if Im really feeling better or if it could be the "placebo" affect but I do feel a little different. Im not as anxious to wear Im shaking in social situations though i still feel anxiety. when i would normally sit bakc and feel a little blue, now i feel nothing and cant really cry even when i want to. i dont really feel like me though and thats the thing i dont like...so we shall see.

Side affects, I have to take it at night b/c it makes me so tired and lately it has started giving me night sweats to where I feel my body burning up hot...its wierd. I also could not cum during sex w/ hubby...apparently this is going to be a problem so we'll see how long I stay on these.

*oh another strange side affect, i normally am very particular about what i wear and my makeup and all but lately i could care less if i wore the same outfit 3 days ina row...i guess im losing motivation??*

i used Zoloft briefly when i was 13. You wont feel anything at all. It makes many people "level." I didnt like it, cuz I'm pretty "emotionless" naturally--id be a fembot if i took it now.

anti-depresants make alot people lose sex drive. they dumb down passion about anything in general. But its been a long time since i used anti-d's so i was wondering if there had been any improvements made since 1994.

It sounds like maybe an ADD drug like Adderall might work better for you...keep you focused, lift the fog, etc...

I've been on a million anti-depressants and anti anxiety drugs. None of them ever have any effect on me..like I could literally swallow a whole bottle of valium, xanax, etc...and I might as well be swallowing tic tacs and it would do exactly the same thing. I have a freaky high tolerance, plus my pancreatic condition means drugs dont absorb like they should...combine those things, and nothing has any effect on me.

I'm currently on 60 mgs of Cymbalta a day. I dont know if my blue period lifted on its own or this is helping...only time will tell
