On a related note, when we went to the National Aquarium in Baltimore yesterday, they have an Australian exhibit sponsored by Animal Planet. There were birds flying around and I noticed two were Eastern Rosellas and thought of Lysondra. There were also flying foxes hanging from the ceiling, and some nifty fishies. Good stuff.

Cute birds, Cam. I love the bigger ones but they need more time and care then I have right now. The daughter's two parakeets/budgies will have to do for right now.

Yeah...hes a ham. Actually I have no idea if he is a he or a she...you need a blood test to tell with this species. And I wasnt going to breed them so I didnt care enough to do it.

Heh, I only did it because Mei Mei means 'little sister' in Mandarin. Nothing like naming your bird the girliest name in the world and them turning out to be a boy! So I double checked.

Usually you can sorta tell by personality. Either way you end up assigning a sex anyway. I know males are more talkative and hyper and eager to please. Females are less chittery, play more and are a bit 'ruffled in the feathers' if you know what I mean.

Mei Mei's been known to PMS. Ha.

True. But in a group setting, some birds will take on characteristics of the opposite sex, so you never really know. My conures have never tried to hump each other and both are loud and bratty...so I assume they are male!

Yes yes, true. It's just a general 'rule'. Hahaha, I like that assumption. Now if they start stealing your panties in your sleep you know for sure.

LOL...no pantie raids...but my one WILL mutter when he knows he's annoyed me "I'm a bad bad boy" And he'll yell at other birds when they are obnoxious..mine and wild ones...which varies from "BAD BOY" to "BAD BIRD"....so hmm...maybe he knows the differance...lol

I'm actually thinking of getting a male bird next (I'm looking at a breeder who specializes in green conures) because I love personality, as that's why I get birds... but males tend to be SO FUCKING bratty, don't they?! My friend has a male bird and it will steal things, kiss her and then bite, laugh and chortle and destroy things JUST to bug her (and omgomgomg bird KNOW... they fucking KNOW... you can see it in their eyes... they KNOW it's bad and mean!).... but at the same time, males seem like awesome companions for more hard-core training and companionship while females seem more the type to be pretty and cuddly but not trained or held as much.

Any advice on conures or males? Does yours do that AWESOMELY cute conure thing of 'vibrating' while purring? It's such a weird thing, but it's so cool.

My one does do the purring thing!! I finished hand raising him and OMG he's SUCH a mommas boy!!! He'll wait until I'm good and mad about something and ready to kill him..then he lowers his head, looks up at me and says " love you mom" Oh yea...he fucking KNOWS!!

He also tortures the cats. My female wont even go near them...my male gets duped once in awhile. Rio will call him" kitty...meow...meow..." then when he goes to investigate, he gets nipped on the nose or paw. Rio will then laugh hysterically while the cat runs away.

Ahahahaha, awesome! My cats are afraid of my birds too. The birds bite back! Not fun at all! What a GOOD talker he is, though, omg. I love when birds talk.. and they know just what to say (Love you mom? OMG DIE!) at the right times. Smart little insane buggers.
