Default Is this a bad idea?

My roommate who is moving away owes me $1300. She has the money to pay me back but she doesn't want to wire it to me because she says it will cost her a couple hundred more dollars.

We use the same bank. Is it safe for me to give her my account number? If not, does anyone know what I should do instead?

I love her and used to trust her but the circumstances of her owing me the money leads me to distrust her. I hate being put in this situation. Maybe I'm too trusting.

I've never dealt with a situation like this, and I truly appreciate any advice I get! Thank you!

Not sure if its the same in the US but in the UK I think its pretty safe to give someone you bank account number so they can put money directly into your bank. They would need 2 other forms of ID plus security details to be able to withdraw money. Maybe call your bank to double check.

Or couldn't she just write you a cheque and post it?

I'm pretty sure in the US that's not safe-she could have access to your account if the bank people were not paying attention. I think wiring only costs $50 or so!

I think it's safe as well, but you still might want to double check it. I do remember a while ago paying somebody on ebay by depositing money into their account, so it must be pretty safe for people to give these kind of details out to strangers over the internet.
Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.

She can't really do much with just your account number. I have my landlord's bank account number and that's how I pay rent - go to the bank and deposit to his account.

Some banks will also let you do a transfer between accounts owned by different people, at their bank. Bank of America does this.

To do a bankwire she would need your account number also.

she doesnt need your bank account number. you use the same bank so she can write a check made out to you and take it there and they should deposit it in your account.
but if you have more than one account there, like a checking and savings or two checking or whatever, then she'll need to know which account.

^^^YES. She can just walk in and say she wants to put this money in your account. She needs to know your name and address, in case there are more of you. And she should know which account to put it in. That is it. No numbers needed.

I stand corrected. For some reason my bank is really really paranoid and will not let me do this.

I would have her write me a check and send it, but I need the money sooner rather than later. I put our bills for the last two months on my credit card and I really need to pay it off. I only have the card to build credit so I don't want to be paying interest on it. My mom told me not to give her my bank account number because she thinks she could empty out my account, but based on what a lot of you guys are saying, I don't think she could do much with just my account number.

But... I get in trouble once in awhile for being too trusting.

I understand being skeptical about it. I have needed to give my friends money before and just deposited it in their bank account. I've never had a bank account that would let you withdraw money without proof of identification.

Go to your bank, open a new account. Should take about 1/2 an hour. Have her put funds in that account..then close the account and deposit into your real account. THen you have your money and she doesnt have any account # thats worth anything.

BofA only charges $20 for a wire transfer... Most banks I've dealt with are the same. I'd check it out, sounds a little shady.

account numbers are printed on checks anyhow. every time you write a check, you "give" that person your account number.

o yeah walmart does transfers like western union style. i think those are more expensive that a bank transfer, but they're not a few hundred dollars. probably between 12-30 ish depending on the amount.

and then there's also western union. i'm pretty sure they do wire transfers not just money orders.

Yay Cam! Number one advice lady FTW! I'm gonna do the new bank account thing.

I already knew that my account number is on my checks, but I'm also super skeptical about check-writing anyway. I only write checks if that's all they'll accept.

Don't give her you account number, give her your banks wiring instructions, and have her bank wire the funds. This will not cost any more that $25

    DON'T...DO...IT.

It sounds like the girl is making excuses, honestly. It does NOT cost a few hundred dollars to wire money. And like other people pointed out, why can't she mail a check or find another way to send the money?

If she already owes you $1300(which isn't exactly chump change), then I would be a little leary of giving her personal info like a bank account number...ESPECIALLY if you have a large amount of money in it right now AND she is aware of this. I know that it doesn't feel good to mistrust friends, but...I've learned that I can trust almost nobody.

    Better safe than sorry.

couldn't she just do a money order at the postoffice, or a cashier's check from the bank?

That way its as good as cash and will post rightway to the account, no "flloat"

Erm, not true... I pay bills online with an account number and a routing number and little else (which this person also would know since OP shares the same bank with her). I believe you can open a paypal "verified" account with that info too. Bank account numbers should not be shared lightly. You also have fewer options if a bank account is compromised than say a credit card.

If you need the money sooner rather than later, and if you think she really has it (I have my doubts, sorry) the best mechanism is to wire it by WU. The cost for next-day cash wire of that amount is around $35 - $40. (Not "hundreds.") I think the "hundreds" plea is an indicator she really doesn't have it.

    Anyway, the advantages include:

    1. No headaches with bank-to-bank wires, where a dozen things can go wrong if any of the routing or account numbers are incorrect or names are not perfect. You do NOT want to have to back-trace a bank wire. This is even a problem with inter-branch transfers which you are dealing with here.

    2. No risk that there will be time delays or holds on checks with new or existing accounts. Banks push for their 5-day hold whenever they can get it, even when it's not mandated by regulation.

    3. No risk that if her check bounces, you get charged a fee (and don't have the money anymore).

    4. You can pick up the cash at pretty much any major chain grocery store, major retailer or shipping locations with a WU terminal. It's usually in the "Customer Service" section. You can check for any local outlet by searching by zip code.

    4. Make sure you get the $$ at WU in cash, not check, or you are back to your bank hold again! It's best to go to a major store to pick up the wire so you don't run into a problem like this.

    5. Also, be sure to take two forms of photo ID if you have them (she should do the same when she wires to you). Some WU outlets require this on wires of over $1,000.

    Good luck!
