    Default Bad news at work...

Well, it's official. My day job is laying people off and I'm going to be one of them. Thank God I ordered my dance gear already! Now I HAVE to audition and start working; can't let my nerves hold me back. Times are HARD ladies. Here are my current monthly expenses:

Student loan payment: $501 (They're already consolidated! )
    Verizon internet & Phone: $120
    Tmobile cell: $35
Dell financial: $51 (financed my lap top)
    Car note: $270
Oil Change: $40 (I need one every month)
Credit card payments: $200 (I have $5500 in credit card bills from dental/medical procedures that I had to pay for.)

Now, that's my monthly debt WITHOUT moving out of my parents house. (Which I will HAVE to do once I start dancing.)
Once I move out, I'll have to add $735 for rent to that list. (All utilities included)

Please let me know, is this a plausible amount to make on a monthly basis while dancing in NY/NJ?

I know you going through a rough time right now, but I believe that you will reach goals with dancing. You seem very determined and you have a positive additude towards your situation. I wish you the best of luck honey. You may want to talk to Lady Jade and some of the other NY/NJ girls as well.

I'm so sorry you have to deal with that stress, hon. But you'll make it through. Please stay strong and know that we're here to support you!

I wish I could answer your question, but I have no idea about the earnings in the area you live in.

i dont know about the ny/nj area, but in md it would be possible. my bills add up to around $2000, not including credit cards or gas/groceries/other expenses, and i'm absolutely fine money wise.

i mean, think about it. say you work 4 shifts a week and only make $200 a shift. thats still $800 a week and $3200 a month.

^^Exactly what I was thinking Britt.

I have a question - have you ever danced before? That will effect your earning potential!

Also, you forgot gasoline, food and other "unexpected expenses" (like clothes, renters insurance, etc.)

That said, you can easily make 4 grand a month if you work 4-5 shifts a week. It's hard as hell on the body and mind, but it is possible. That's on an average of 200 a shift. Which doesn't always happen in NJ right now.

Also, where are you renting? That rent is seriously cheap!!

Aww, thanks hun! I really appreciate it. I just need to grow a pair and get in there. I don't know why I'm so nervous, I've done booty shaking contests in a thong in packed clubs before. Once I actually go, I'll be fine though.

Thanks love. I totally need your support right now and it helps to know that I've always got someone to talk to.

That's comforting to know. $200 a shift sounds possible.

Nope, I've never danced before. (Is that bad?)

Oy vey! The crazy part is, I was thinking about gas/groceries but was so
I didn't even put it in there.

The rent is for a place in Newark that I was offered. (Cheap but hood.)

Again, I agree with Britt (get out of my brain woman!)

Newark is hood. And can be extremely dangerous. Especially at 3am. To someone with cash on them.

It's not BAD that you haven't danced before, you just have to learn the hustle and deal with the assholes and get used to it - like any job. It takes a while to get things down.

I must agree on Newark-not a great place (I know, there are nice areas everywhere, but I've had nothing but badness from Newark). You can totally split a 2 br with someone for that much, in a safer town, cutting your utils in half. It might take some effort to find someone, but it's worth it to come home safe.

Can you fib a bit at the parents? Say you got a bartending gig and pay some more of those bills down?

True, the Ironbound section of Newark is very nice. It's where the new ice hockey rink is.

However, the news did just report that this past month was a record breaker for Newark. It was the only 30 day period in 10 years that there was NOT a homicide in Newark.

I agree with Rose. Split the rent with someone, it might even be cheaper.

I think this would be a good idea for the first month or so of you dancing. Sometimes being new can affect your earnings in a positive way. Guys always like to see a new face and the enthusiasm you have at the start can outweigh your lack of ability. However, your earnings will probably be quite up and down when you first start so a little breather at your folks house without having to pay rent would help a lot. Can you tell them your bartending?

That's a great idea! I can definately do that. Hopefully long enough to pay off my laptop and credit cards.

I do have a great friend that lives in East Orange and he's offered to drive me to and from the club every night (when I move to NJ). He's really responsible and dependable; so I'm really happy that I'll have a man that I can trust to keep me safe every night.

From the sounds of it, Newark is a DEFINATE no-no. I was told that the area that I was offered an apt. in wasn't bad. (But if I think about it; this is someone who grew up in some REALLY rough neighborhoods.)

I can always count on you ladies to help me when I need it. SW is the best!

try that database, i'm not sure what it takes to qualify (if that's even necessary) but i did a quick search around Essex county (where you seem to be looking) and found some pretty good deals and some relatively pricey deals too though. but at least it'll give you an idea of what to expect.

east orange/irvington isn't much better than newark imho.

there are parts that are good as home ownership brings the neighborhoods together but rental parts are still going to be iffy on average imo. you'd be better off looking at commuter zone rentals. montclair, south orange, maplewood, but you'll also get into higher rates. hth

I guess the good news is that I'll get a severance package and unemployment. Thanks Snoopy! I will check that out right now. Thank you all so much for your help and encouragement.

I told my mom yesterday that I will be laid off from work. (even though I'm not sure when exactly) Then I told her that I was thinking about bartending at a strip club and she accepted that pretty easily. She just said "That would be really good because it'll give you time to go to school during the day." I know my family will never go to a strip club, so I'm no longer worried about them finding out. Thanks ladies!

The only good part about me being terminated will be that I can deferr my student loan payments, laptop payments and credit card payments. (I bought insurance for the last two that deferrs payments if you lose your job.) So all I'll have to pay is my $270 car payment, Verizon and Tmobile. That way, any additional money after those are paid, I can put towards my credit card debt.

The only thing with living with your parent is you've gotta be careful about leaving your dance stuff around. (I know you've prob thought of this already but just in case!) Maybe get a locker and leave our shoes at work and make sure you wash and dry all your dance clothes when they're out at work or whatever. A friend of mines mother found some of her dance clothes and she had to tell her that her and her bf were a bit kinky and she liked to dress up for him!
