    Default Do you compost?

I am so absolutely thrilled that I can say I now have a compost heap. My aunts here have gardens and I am such a nerd but I can't wait to see the results of using the compost when we get to plant stuff this spring. The soil here is very clay-based so we need all the help we can get.

Does anyone else do this? If you don't, would you if you knew more about it?

(I know this thread is really boring compared to the serial killer thread but maybe this will take some of the heat off)

yes....with the grass clippings in the back, and usually the next year we dig under and get the good soil to use for that years plantings....which probably isn't a good thing that we;re always planting new plants every year to replace those that we "lost".

My parents used to compost. Our entire area has clay, so everyone has to buy topsoil, which gets expensive and just washes away with the rain anyway. They'd make gigantic compost piles so my mom could have something to garden with. Worked great. Smelled horrible.

i compost, but i only started last year, and i have a lil vegetable garden and a pear tree
These days I like to count my money. I like to wash it delicately and iron it. Sometimes I dry it with some bounty to make it all nice and cuddly. I love my money... did I say that out loud?

My grandma does it, and has done it for years. I personally don't even have a garden, so until I can get to that point, compost isn't really worth much for me

I've actually thought about this for years now but to be honest I'm rather lazy. Plus I know nothing about it. Enlighten us!

My best friends do & I admire it greatly, just have never been in a living situation where I could do it myself. Hopefully soon . . .

well its a place where you put all of your organic waste- leaves, grass clippings, and non animal food waste. then in like 6-10 mths it rots and turns into "black gold"- compost, which in turn can be used to fertilize anything. a compost pile can be in a giant container , a fenced in box, or just in a pile i guess

This site gives some good info:

You don't really need fancy containers though. We have a plastic thing that has some holes in the side and we just toss stuff into it every few days. In our kitchen we use a big tupperware.

does it need enzymes or any type of "starter" ?

    Get one of these:

I posted this the last time the subject came up:

    http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product...=1&topnav=&s=1

    Or make one of these:

    http://shoppingmatchmaker.com/compost.htm

    or

    http://images.google.com/imgres?imgu...%3Den%26sa%3DN

Look what you can divert from a landfill:

    http://images.google.com/imgres?imgu...%3Den%26sa%3DN

    http://www.plantea.com/compost-materials.htm

I've had one for about 8 years, I've only emptied it once (into the garden), and nothing that can be composted goes in the trash.

And, no. Rotten stuff seems to have plenty of it's own enzymes.

Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

I did when I had a yard, but condo living makes it difficult. My mom always has as far as I can remember, because she loves to garden. She has a lot of land so it's easy just to go toss the eggshells and coffee grounds and other compostable waste in a big pile by the garden.

It's cool what will come up in the spring; a few years ago she wound up with potato plants growing out of it from little survivors of the kitchen knife.

I love to garden. I need to find my community gardens in PDX and get a plot going for the summer.

Avocado and mango pits are really hard to compost. I just remembered that.

We greenbin. The city picks up foot waste separate from the garbage and recycling.

    i REALLY want to!
Right now we just throw food scraps off of our deck for the animals in the woods.
However they don't eat it all and we have rotting food in our pretty yard.
I would love to have a veggie garden this year and the compost would surely help.
We can't have a garbage disposal due to our septic system and my hubby takes our trash to work so we try not to throw food scraps in it. I will scroll up and read the links posted when i get home later.
I'm very very interested in this!

I just started this lastfall, but I don't know how successful it can be. First I don't throw out much compostable trash; mostly it's just garden plant waste. Also with long cold winters here, the composting doesn't occur for many months. Finally my area doesn't get much rain at all. I need to learn a lot more.

I am fortunate to live in an area which once was good farmland with lots of good growable poil, albeit with a lot of diseases apparently and only a few trees for leaf compost.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

NOTE: anything I post here, outside of a direct quote, is my opinion only, which I am entitled to. Take it for what you estimate it is worth.

I don't compost because of where I live and cooking for just myself all the time means very little food scraps.
My parents have done it for ages though and it's really good having food scraps go into this rather than just producing more rubbish.
It's good too, if you're planning to start composting, to remember to break up the food scraps with other less nutritious things such as newspaper to make the whole composting process easier
Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.

If you can find a container you can flip over, it will work better, just FYI. A big round plastic barrel is great for this. Just roll it around a few times once a month or so.

Heh, my parents used to have one. I thought of it as the giant trash pile. There were four kids plus my parents... it got really big. I don't remember why they stopped, though.

I cannot wait to have my own house, with a nice big yard.

The soil here is pretty good to start with, and it's warm, with plenty of rain, so it seems like good conditions.

    I would like to grow:
    berries: strawberries, raspberries and blueberries
    figs
    lemons
    tomatoes
    corn
    cucumbers
    onion
    cauliflower, brocolli
    some type of squashes.
    fresh herbs.

I'm a pretty good gardener, my aunt grows a lot of her own produce, and I've learned a lot from her.
