    Default Going Green

This thread was inspired by the National Geographic and Compost threads.

I'm just wondering who here is doing their part to minimize their carbon footprint?

In my house we purchased a reusable coffee filter and have changed all our lightbulbs over to the new energy saving twisty ones. We recycle our newpapers and magizines, bottles and cans and try to remember not to let the water run while we brush out teeth.

Yes, conserving energy here at our house too. I wish there was a earth smiley to insert here but I guess this one will do, lol

We use solar on the hot water and are saving to invest in more solar power and have switched out all possible lightbulbs to the new energy saving kind.
We also recycle glass, plastic and paper and use a canvas shopping bags.

I try to drive as little as possible and drive a hybrid.
Another thing we do which is often over looked by those wanting to get more green is to plant a garden and trees as well as buy local made and grown products.

    Yay for positive topics!

I don't own a car - haven't for almost a decade. At first it wasn't by choice (poor finances and losing my license for not driving with insurance) but even after I got all that straightened away, I've decided I don't need to own a car to get around. I use FlexCar (now ZipCar) for the occasional car use, or rent a car if I need it for a longer trip.

I purchase carbon offsets for my ZipCar use. I know there's some controversy over carbon offsets but I just see it as one small piece of the puzzle.

I take the bus or bike to and from work.

I recycle as much as possible - curbside recycling rocks.

All but maybe two of the bulbs in my apartment are compact fluorescent to reduce my consumption.

There's probably more but that's what I can think of off the top of my head. I'd love to read more ideas.

I've been talking to my husband about looking into solar panels for our house for about a year now. Perhaps now is the time to get moving on it rather than just talk.

I also plan on investing in honeycomb shades for my house. I've heard they're very energy efficent.

We've tried to plan a veggie garden a couple of times, needless to say if we had to be farmers, we would starve to death.

I use a travel mug and if I forget it then I just suffer and go without my coffee rather than purchase a styrofoam cup.

Great thread, southstbabe! Like everyone else has mentioned, I shop with reusable bags, try not to leave the water running while I brush my teeth and wash my face, recycle, and we're replacing all our light bulbs with energy efficeint ones.

We're remoldeling and updating our house so that's giving us some ways to be more green... we got a new furnace- it's not a high efficentcy but it is way more efficeint than the original. We purchased an energy star washer, dryer, and dishwasher. And we're trying our damnedest to use building materials with low VOC emmisions.

The tough one will be when we replace our kitchen cabinets... we can't afford solid wood or bamboo and painting on a VOC blocker scares the shit our of me (what if I eff up the cabinets?!?)

I moved to Portland, LOL! This whole town is so damn green it's hilarious!

My car gets 36 mpg and I walk whenever possible. I bring my own reusable bags to the store when I remember, and I never waste anything. We have a lot of windows in our place so we tend not to use electric lights during the day. I'm not totally green, but it's a start.

I make my own tea at home and bring it to work in a travel mug.

I turn lights off constantly, and don't run the water when I'm brushing my teeth.

We recycle and try to reuse containers and other scraps that could be used for other stuff like art projects.

Sometimes when I'm mad at Jess I make him get out his harness and pull our car to the grocery store.......

    lol

I so wish more urban areas did the flex car thing. It's fabulous!

Oh yeah - part of going green for me is not eating animal products. Factory farming is a very bad thing for the environment.

LOL! I hear ya, I'm not very good at it either. I've switched to flowers and shrub plants and going to the farmers market for my produce. Too bad it doesn't run all year though. I'm thinking of trying one of those aerogarden things for winter time tomato's and greens.

Wow, so many great ways to save our enviroment and $$. Here's another one, if you go to www.catalogchoice.org you can opt out of a lot the junkmail and catalogs that clog up our mailboxes and save hundreds of trees! The best thing to do is to have the catalog you don't want to get anymore when you go online and when you enter it you need to put in the customer number that appears on the mailing label, and bye bye Lillian Vernon! I've even started doing it here at my office.

not eating animal products produced using resources exponentially times greater than producing vegetable based foods is the easiest and as far as I know, more effective than using energy efficient light bulbs or using reusable bags.

I recently purchased these so I will now be using many less paper towels than I used to in the past.

    great thread!

we recycle cans, glass, plastic, newspaper and all food boxes and cardboard.

i just recently bought some reusable bags for groceries, they ROCK!

    we do the lightbulb thing.

    also, no water while brushing

low water/high pressure shower heads and faucets

run our dishwasher at night while in bed

we rarely have our lights on

programmable thermostat for heating and cooling. which all goes WAY down at night while sleeping

just got all new energy star appliances

try to use detergents with no "detergent" in them...i.e. biokleen stuff
my migraines can't handle the smells of regular detergent anyways, plus my oldest skin is super sensitive and can't have it on his clothes either

no dryer sheets or fabric softener
    i use borax or vinegar

combine trips as much as possible. i have a minivan (all those stinkin kids! lol), so gas is a bitch even with the good gas mileage i get, so i try to do everything i need in one trip.

i have a garden every year. i grow lots of cherry tomotos, roma tomatos, big boy tomatos, cucumbers (green and lemon variety), watermelon, pumpkins for halloween, usually some kind of bell peppers...i give all the excess to my neighbors. i'm thinking about getting a big greenhouse so i have a garden all year round, there's nothing like fresh vegis from the garden! i also use non-toxic "pesticides" like soap and also natural fertilizer, my fav is fish emulsion, the tomatos LOVE it!

our house is only 6 yrs old, so it's pretty energy efficient itself

i'm sure there's more, it's just all stuff i don't really think about, i just do it. probably from living in pdx so long! lol

    compact flourescents
    high efficiency utilities
    lookiing into solar panels
composting (sometimes there are snakes..but there's no rats
honeycomb shades and a pull curtain for the back sliding glass door that keeps heat/cool in
We are going to blow in insulation between our floors
when we put down the wood floor we'll be placing cork between, also less vacuming= less electricity
Getting a new more efficient heat pump/air conditioning unit
We don't use baggies to pick up after our dogs. They do "their business" in the back and we clean once a week with a small bag and a pooper scooper. Otherwise you have all these little baggies
Using lush products (hey this counts right?!?!?!)
