I'm deeply mired in novel revision these days, and trying to make substantial progress tonight. The bulk of my novel takes place on a roadtrip across the Australian Outback, with two female characters who start out friendly and become lovers along the way (and then of course everything falls apart, including the relationship). I've gotten good feedback on the early drafts, but one criticism is that they don't do much along the trip besides drive and eat. Outside of their relationship, they need more things to do besides eat.
Thing is though, that's all I know to do on a roadtrip, drive and stop to eat. They do stop at a few tourist attractions, but they need more eventful things to do. Almost all my roadtrips have been solo, so I can't think of that many ways to keep two people engaged on a trip, especially when most of the trip is across barren desert.
So what are some things to do when roadtripping? Adventures to get into, etc.? (This probably sounds like I'm asking for the whole plot. I'm not, I just need a few more scenes to flesh it out.)

) anyhow I read the map wrong and not only did we miss an important turn/off ramp, we ended up unknowingly in the wrong town, spent the night there and continued in the wrong direction the next morning!!! hahahahaa my b/f was sooooooooo fucking pissed at me when I finally spoke up and said, "um honey? I think this is the wrong road." hahahahahahahah I mean seriously, we had gone a couple hundred miles in the wrong direction.

It makes you overlook certain character flaws and bad behavior .
