Default Things To Do On A Roadtrip

I'm deeply mired in novel revision these days, and trying to make substantial progress tonight. The bulk of my novel takes place on a roadtrip across the Australian Outback, with two female characters who start out friendly and become lovers along the way (and then of course everything falls apart, including the relationship). I've gotten good feedback on the early drafts, but one criticism is that they don't do much along the trip besides drive and eat. Outside of their relationship, they need more things to do besides eat.

Thing is though, that's all I know to do on a roadtrip, drive and stop to eat. They do stop at a few tourist attractions, but they need more eventful things to do. Almost all my roadtrips have been solo, so I can't think of that many ways to keep two people engaged on a trip, especially when most of the trip is across barren desert.

So what are some things to do when roadtripping? Adventures to get into, etc.? (This probably sounds like I'm asking for the whole plot. I'm not, I just need a few more scenes to flesh it out.)

    Change a flat tire?

    Make comments about surroundings.

    Take photos while driving.

Make the food lustful... or lustfully bland.

What does the scenery invoke... How many pit stops do you need?
One more cup of coffee for the road,
One more cup of coffee 'fore I go
    To the valley below....

Slowly moseying my way to the exit.

They head into a tropical monsoon, get laid up for a couple of days, and turn south into the desert where the majority of the story takes place. Taking pictures, that's a good idea. I could totally work that in. The flat is a possibility... toward the end they total the car so a flat would be an interesting setup. I like that one, thank you!

on my last road trip we took a quick detour to check out Niagra Falls for a mere 20 minutes and then hurried up to get back on the road.

Oh yeah and there was the stop in Chicago where we stayed in a friend's condo for several days. Woke up one morning to F-14's screaming past the window thinking we were under attack!

Oh YEAH I was the navigator (narcoleptic navigator I was told ) anyhow I read the map wrong and not only did we miss an important turn/off ramp, we ended up unknowingly in the wrong town, spent the night there and continued in the wrong direction the next morning!!! hahahahaa my b/f was sooooooooo fucking pissed at me when I finally spoke up and said, "um honey? I think this is the wrong road." hahahahahahahah I mean seriously, we had gone a couple hundred miles in the wrong direction.

I used to play this silly little game when I was younger. Whoever saw a "Jesus Fish" would yell it out, and everyone else had to take off one article of clothing. Last one with anything still on was the winner. Was real fun on the long stretch of highway with trucker's reactions. I'm too "mature" to play this now.

^^^ Dude. That is brilliant. Won't work in this particular story but I'm gonna keep that in mind for my next roadtrip with other people. How did the driver strip without pulling over?

Very helpful ideas here, thank you.

Yea, tricky when you're the driver. Can't really strip but you just pull things down (shorts, sweats, panties, etc...) Shirts and bras are easier though. You can get those off. Yea, we were REAL bored when we came up with that one.

A friend of mine who is famous for just getting up and going on random roadtrips told me that once she was driving and it was so hot and she happened to come across a house where it was obvious that the owners were gone on vacation or something due to the overflow of newspapers, and they had a pool, so she walked around the back and jumped in...

I was driving across Wyoming with Mrs. UtahMike back three months after we were married and had a wheel bearing go out. Wyoming is not as vast as the Outback, but when you have car trouble there, you can be a long way from the nearest help. We had taken a wrong turn as well, and in trying to get back to the right road, I took a shortcut across a mountain pass and got stuck behind a herd of sheep being moved from here to there. When we finally got past the sheep and started downhill, the wheel bearing started making a noise, sort of like, "Grunk, grunk, grunk!"

I had no idea what it was, but there was nothing I could do about it anyway, so I just kept driving. We finally got on the final approach into Jackson, and the noise stopped, but then the brakes failed! I would push on the pedal, and my foot would just flap all the way down to the floor with no braking action.

So we drove down this winding mountain road with no brakes. I didn't want my wife to be scared, so I started singing Broadway songs like the "Fugue for Tinhorns" and "Luck Be a Lady" from Guys and Dolls. She kept telling me to slow down, and I kept singing louder, and she kept getting more pissed because I wouldn't slow down. Somehow I made it into town, and when the grade leveled off, I shut off the engine and let the car slow down and stop. (I couldn't do this before because there had been no shoulder.) When I stopped, a cloud of smoke came out of the right rear wheel well.

What had happened was that when the wheel bearing finally broke down completely, nothing was holding the axle in the differential, so it drifted out so that the brake shoes were no longer contacting the brake drum. That's why the sound stopped and why I had no brakes.

It was a Sunday, and the car had stopped right in front of Teton Motors, the local GM dealer, so we abandoned the car there and hitched a ride into town in the back of a pickup truck full of empty paint cans. We were so late the hotel had given someone else our reservation, and we ended up in a cheap motel instead.

The motel wouldn't take our check because we were from out of town and had no car. They asked for my credit card, but I didn't have one because I had bad credit at the time after my divorce from wife #1. "You don't have a credit card?" asked the strong, sturdy woman behind the desk. "EVERYBODY has a credit card."

Luckily a friend of mine, Allan, was working as stage manager in a summer stock company (Aside: Annie Get Your Gun, was the production, and there was a scene where the actor playing Frank Butler had to open a door onstage, look through it, and say there was nobody there. Allan told me that the actor was gay, and that every night when he opened the door, everyone male in the company who was not on stage would be standing on the other side holding their dicks and whipping them around in circles, trying to make the actor laugh, but he never did. Now back to our story.) Allan got the theatre manager to cash a check for me, so we had money for the motel, dinner, and the show.

On the way out of town, I needed gas, so I stopped at a gas station and filled up the tank. When I went in to pay for it, I took out my checkbook, and the clerk, a pimply faced boy of about fifteen, said, "No out of town checks."

"OK," I said, "You'll just have to take back the gas." So he took my check instead.

The next day, we got the car fixed, but the garage put the new wheel bearing on backwards, so the same thing happened to us on the way back. But this time, I knew what the sound was, and it was a weekday, so we were able to stop in a small town where there was a garage and get the car fixed again.

    ***************************************
Another trip, I took my car into a gas station to see why the radiator kept boiling. They said my thermostat needed to be replaced, but they sold me the wrong thermostat. So on another trip through the mountains, the radiator boiled again. There was a stream down the hill from the road, so after the radiator cooled down, I refilled it with water from the stream. Do you have any idea how long it takes to refill a radiator with water carried in two empty coke bottles? After a half an hour, a guy with a bucket stopped and helped us.

But I couldn't drive more than ten minutes without the radiator overheating, so it took a long time to get back to town and complain to the garage that they hadn't fixed my problem. They checked the thermostat ("Oops, wrong thermostat, sorry.") and replaced it with the right one.

This sort of spoiled the trip, but we went to a local motel and pretended we were somewhere else having motel fun.

On a road trip, me and two buddies:

Pegged the speedometer in a rental car and took a picture - doing 120+ (indicated) in a 70 MPH zone.

Got a speeding ticket about 10 minutes after that for doing 90 in a 70 - which in Montana was a $40 fine we could just pay the trooper and be on our way.

Ran out of gas because we stopped to eat and forgot to gas up the car, too, and then continued on into miles and miles of barren Montana prairie.

Flagged down a Winnebago full of a mom, a dad, and four daughters aged 16 through 24 to drive to the next town and get gas.

    ...in one day.

On that same road trip, the next night and day, we saw sunset in the South Dakota Badlands, and saw the following sunrise at Devil's Tower in Wyoming and hiked around the base. Later that morning we tried to stand in the geographical center of North America, but were told by a nice little old lady "Oh, you boys don't want to go out there. It's on private property. And there's rattlesnakes." We were disappointed but I was secretly relieved.

Oh, man, road trip stories. I gots some.

    AUDIOBOOKS! AUDIOBOOKS! AUDIOBOOKS!

You can borrow some from your library, you can buy them off the internet, or you can be like me and pirate them, yarrr. I remember listening to the Lord of the Rings with my family on a road trip, and my bro and I passed the time by listening to The Godfather when we drove to see my grandparents.

    two ideas:
    1. one of the girls throws up, or one starts choking and they have to jump out and have one do the heimlich for the other (inspired by a friend who choked on nachos and had to jump out and throw himself at a guard rail to do a self-heimlich.)

    2. notice that they don't have cell phone reception, and have them stop in the middle of nowhere just to walk out into the dessert beyond where they can see the car just to see what it feels like to be that isolated.

I like to play the "who am I" game. One person asks "Who am I?" The other person asks yes or no questions to finally guess who the person is. For example:

If you were an article of clothing what whould you be? ... tight shorts
If you were a landform what would you be? ... a mountain
If you were a vehicle what would you be? ... a bicycle?

    Are you Lance Armstrong???

I have loads of other questions.

I dunno, they get bored and have horridly self-absorbant conversations about how it's just like America.....food everywhere, they seriously thought it'd be all Jack Keroac style but they were sorely mistaken?

Expound upon the grunginess of public restrooms? Steal the funny pee story from Leno--girl gets car caught in snow on first date....gets out to pee....gets her ASS stuck to the back of the vehicle, date comes out to find out what's taking her so long....she's stuck....only solution is for dude to piss warm liquid on her ass to free her from the bumper.

Incorporate those crazy new pee-cardboard-things for chicks, bc they are hip females who read about it in Bitch magazine? (Note---this is not an endorsment for Bitch.)

Yeah, there you go. They can pop some peyote and have a crazy trip. Maybe they can hallucinate a giant kangaroo. From the giant kangaroo's pouch can jump another kangaroo, and from that kangaroo's pouch can jump another kangaroo, and from that kangaroo's pouch can jump another kangaroo, who will then shout at the main characters,

" Bitch, I have not said anything to you this whole time I was here but your a rude ass wench. I'm sorry your 64 triple z boobs hang down to your pussy which, I'm sure has not been touched for obvious reasons. Waddle your whale ass to the fuckin gym bitch and you won't be so fuckin evil, you heifer!!!"

Then after the main characters bitch slap all the evil kangaroos, they can go bra shopping together.

I'm sorry. I'm tired and about to hallucinate myself. Good night!

Do you gotta hallucinate kangaroos in the outback? I thought they was for real! They could stop and casually eat a kangaroo burger at least...no commentary necessary.

I dont know where theyre going to find peyote in Australia...

My ideas - romp naked in some beautiful area - just because you can. (Done this myself, infact done half of a road trip completely nude) I know its dessert but there could be a random water hole or random patch of greenery.
Find a random excentric hitch hiker. I also know this happens too (-:

I was going to say the same thing!! I love audiobooks for road trips, esp the ones I've had to go on with my mom. It makes it easy for when there's a lull in conversation or just when it gets boring.

The Undomestic Goddess by Sophie Kinsella is really funny for chick road trip.

ETA: Oh yeah, I also pirate them through torrentz.com or Limewire. Not much selection tho, but I was able to download all 7 Harry Potter books, which are great! I suggest downloading or renting from somewhere. If you rent a bunch at once, you can import them into iTunes and have them on your iPod for whenever you want them. I wouldn't buy from iTunes tho, they are more expensive and don't allow burning rights. Download elsewhere.
