    Default hpv

My wonderful ex just called and informed me that he caught hpv 4 years ago and he thought I should know now since we were broken up and I'd be sleeping with other people. He knew all along and didn't tell me becouse I was "with him, so it didn't matter". Wow. I'm freaking out now...has anyone had any experiance with this? I did a search on yahoo and found out alot of people get it, but it can cause cancer.

What a fuck-head. That aside, don't freak out yet.

A majority of people actually have HPV, and there are many many many different strains. Some can cause warts, some can cause cervical cancer, and some have no obvious effects.

I apparently have a couple of different strains. (warts, and now abnormal cells in my cervix). It's a pain, and it can be stressful, but the world is not over. If you haven't had a recent pap (like once a year), I would schedule one just to make sure everything is ok. Other than that, keep an eye on your girlie bits and make sure everything looks ok.

Thank you, I might be able to sleep now. He had just called and I've never had someone do this to me before...I'm still in shock but feel a little better.

I got some semi-odd looking cells on my last pap, so apparently I got it. There were no symptoms, I never felt or saw a thing...whatever strain I have, it's a cancer-causing strain. It doesn't do a blessed thing to men, only to the fairer, cervical-bearing sex. I've heard they don't even test for this on men, and that you can still get it when he wears a condom. Super duper. There's only the shots you could get, I suppose.

There is a new shot that prevents against HPV that you can take if you haven't had too many sexual partners. My doctor was trying to get me to take get it, but I declined because it is still relatively new. Though one of my friends just got the test so I'm considering getting it. Okay--sorry this isn't supposed to be about me.

Don't quote me on this, but to my understanding my doctor did say that almost all women eventually get HPV. However, there are only two or three types of HPV that can cause cancer and warts. If you get a pap smear and it turns up abnormal then the doctor will test you for HPV. I would recommend booking an appointment with your doctor and tell her your concerns.

And about your ex---what an a**hole. I would want to kick him in the balls if he gave me HPV.

The shot only prevents a few different kinds of strains of HPV. It can be a very big deal - and it can also be nothing at all to worry about.

It's really just important that from now on you are extra aware of your hoohoo. Talk to your doctor about this immediately. The easiest way to keep it in the nothing at all to worry about range - is worrying about it. Get tested, talk to your doctor. If you do test positive for HPV discuss what level of severity it is. There is low risk, medium risk, and high risk strains of HPV - namely the risk being cervical cancer. However if you do have a strain that is likely to deform into cervical cancer, being on top of it can catch it as soon as it begins to deform and the cells can be removed before developing into something that would require operations that would prevent future child bearing if that is in your plan.

You will be okay though! It is a very, very common disease, and while it is surely no picnic, doctors are learning more and more about this epidemic and you should be fine and live the same life someone without HPV lives as long as you keep on top of it.

My best friend was recently informed that she contracted HPV and her doctor emphasized the fact that scheduling pap smears more often than she normally would - 2-3 a year, would highly increase her odds of catching any signs of deformity in time to easily fix it.

Sorry if I'm being redundant, I'm kind of tired.

I'm so sorry this happened to you! What a fucking asshole - this is why it has become an epidemic. For guys its no big deal - you cant tell they have it so they don't tell anyone and then they give it to girls and they don't know and they give it to another guy and he doesn't know - there are no tests for HPV for men - and he gives it to another girl and she doesn't know. It's insane.

Oh, what a fuck douchebag! Putting someone else's health at risk? Grr. That makes me mad. He should have told you in a mature, calm conversation BEFORE you had sex so you could weigh the possible outcome.

I guess some people can't suck it up and be HUMAN about a serious subject.

But, like many have said HPV has many different strains, some do not cause any effects, some warts, some cervical cancer. Go to a gyno and ask to be tested for everything as well. If he lied about one thing, you need to make sure he wasn't lying about something else so you are not putting your future partners at risk.

Just remember, your life is not over. I find this is the first thing that pops into people's heads when they get a "chronic" STD (even when they're NOT terminal). Yes, if you do (which, you might not, you won't know for sure unless you go to a doctor) you need to nip it in the bud (especially if it's the cervical cancer causing kind - PS: Just because you have abnormal cells doesn't mean it's HPV, you can have abnormal cells on a pap and not have it) and get a doctor who has a good understand of HPV and how it works, exactly what is is, and can diagnose you properly.

Like someone else said, if you do have a kind that causes cervical cancer, you need to go get a pap smear a couple more times a year as opposed to once to make sure there are no irregularities (because if there are, catching it fast is very good!). Warts are usually the harmless kinds, you just get them frozen off (or use a cream). They might be a little stubborn, but usually the end up going into "remission". Although you still have the virus, you don't have visible signs of it.

how the hell did he know he "caught" hpv? they can't test for it in men. unless he had warts.

warts are a good sign, though, it is less likely you have the type of hpv that causes cervical cancer.

ugh, i hate to admit it, but hooray for the internet and anonymity- I had warts. cleared up in about 9 months for me. For most people it clears up in 6, but I caught mine about 3 months in.

It's really nothing to stress about. I know some girls that had cervical cancer and the surgery was actually a breeze for them. don't be worried, though, hpv happens a LOTTTTT

First, props to everyone who stepped up to the plate and said they have this, because people never admit shit like that.

I also have HPV, one of the strains that causes cancer. What happened to me was well, a bit unpleasant, but hey I got drugs out of it Okay, if you have abnormal cells on your cervix, don't freak the fuck out, it takes about ten years minimum to cause cancer. Anyway, they go in with this crazy electric knife thing, and cut off the part of your cervix it's on. Crazy, your cervix grows back! There's really no discomfort or anything afterwards either.

(this is called a LEAP procedure by the way if you want to google it)

For most people they only have to have this done once, and then your paps will come back normal forever. I don't really know if you would still be contagious or not after having this procedure done. My boyfriend knows I have this.....he was pretty cool about it.

(DFB, the girls who had the surgery didn't actually have cervical cancer they had pre-cancerous cells on their cervix. Cervical cancer is not as easily treated, not by a long fucking shot)

I think he's just being an ass to be honest....The way to test for HPV is by scraping a few cells off someone's cervix so unless he has a deeper skeleton in his closet he's not telling you.....

Either way, don't stress it. A lot of people do have HPV and it doesn't affect their life and as long as you see you gyno once a year or if you have any problems, there isn't much to worry about.

SOOOO many women have hpv and don't know it. I had an abnormal pap smear @ 19 and it just went away on its own. Like the ladies said, not all strands of hpv cause cancer or warts. You should be fine, just pay a visit to the gyn. P.S. He's a dick.

Unless he had developed genital warts from his HPV strain, then he would have known. If not, and he's lying, he's a dick. If he wasn't lying, he's still a dick because if it was one of the high risk strains he was putting you at risk. So either he was ignorant of this fact, or just a huge jerk.

I had an abnormal pap smear last year and tested positive for the high risk strain (cancer causing) of HPV. I freaked out when I found out that they would have to do that LEAP procedure on me. But once I did some more reasearch on HPV it didn't seam like such a disaster anymore. The procedure was very minor and painless (I think my anxiety in anticipation of the procedure was much worse).

HPV is considered the "common cold" of the STD world. A study found more than 50% of college age women were found to have acquired an HPV infection within 4 years of first having sex. Often people don't even know they have it because the immune system inactivates the virus before it can cause cells to change. BUT, you should make sure to get your yearly pap smears, beacuse of the strains that can cause cervical cancer:

    http://www.cancer.org/docroot/CRI/co...V_Vaccines.asp

"Almost all (more than 99 %) cervical cancers are related to HPV. Of these, about 70% are caused by HPV types 16 or 18. About 500,000 pre-cancerous cell changes of the cervix, vagina, and vulva are diagnosed each year in the United States, and over half are related to HPV 16 and 18. Low-grade cervix cell changes are caused by a variety of HPV types, including 16, 18, 6, or 11."

First, the only way a man could have been diagnosed with it is if it was genital warts. He either was diagnosed with that one or he slept with someone who told him she had the cervical kind and now he thinks he has it (which actually would make hima carrier, but most men become carriers at some point anyway). The best thing to do would be to call him and clarify.

Second, it is very illegal to sleep with someone if you have been diagnosed with a permenant std and don't tell them.

Third, it doesn't take 10 years to develop into cancer. There are several forms, and some are more aggresive than others. I work with a 20 yo that told me she'd only been with 2 men and lost her virginity at nearly 18, and she has full blown cervical cancer, and i sstill trying to work through the chemo with a wig, and she has to have a hysterectomy as well.

I was told that I had a few strains of the cancer causing type. I was freaking out especially because I had absolutely no symptoms, just an abnormal pap. Went back in a little over 6 months later and it seems to have cleared on it's own. My Dr. suggested follow up paps every 6 months just to make sure everything is still normal.

It's usually hard to prove person A gave you something like herpes or HPV. You could have had it before, and since there is not way of knowing how long you've had it, it's pointless in my opinion. You could have had something before you slept with person A.

Basically, it should be something you get over, and move on. Not dwell on it trying to get money out of some douche.

I have HPV -- my GYN actually told me most women do. Some estimates are in the 60 to 80% range. So you're in good company.

I found out I had it in a most unfortunate way -- I found strange bumps -- the warts -- that had to be surgically removed. Gross, but I did get percocets out of the ordeal, and the symptoms fortunately never came back. You'd never know I had this happen by looking at me (er, my vag) now. I also tested positive on the pap for the cancerous strain.

Honestly, it's not that big a deal. The stigma of having an STD is the worst part of it, but in practice, a lot of people have them. It's not right that there's any shame attached -- it's a fucking virus, and sex just happens to be its vector. Everyone has sex; some people just win the (unlucky) lotto.

Anyway, it hasn't affected my life since the surgery.

And in accordance with my doctor's advice, I generally don't bring it up with sex partners as long as we're using condoms. I sometimes tell them anyway, and I've never had anybody mind. Like I said, it's very common.

Honestly, I consider myself fortunate to have only had HPV -- I have 3 close friends who have herpes, and that one's actually painful. (HPV isn't).
