    Default Coordination and Shoes

I'm generally a fairly graceful and coordinated person. I've been dancing for about three weeks now; on fridays, saturdays, and mondays..It hasn't been THAT long, but I still wobble a bit when doing certain dance moves, and then there are the moves I don't try at all because I know I would just tumble over. It's sorta frustrating..

How long did it take for you to get coordinated in the shoes?

I still wobble a bit on some moves, and I have danced for 3 years

Could be the shoes. Some styles just don't give enough support and would have the most seasoned veteran wobbling. Have you tried any other styles?

True enough. I have to have ankle straps. Also if I'm wearing stockings or socks, I'm more prone to slipping and losing my balance. And the shoes I have are clear plastic which stretches out the more you wear them, so they are looser than they used to be.

That all being said, I don't expect ever to feel like my shoes are just an extension of my body! But I'm definitely not a very graceful person in or out of the club, so that may just be me.

I bought a pair with ankle straps as my first shoes and I find that I'm still sort of wobbly in them. I'm much more comfortable in the Pleasers that don't have ankle straps but rather two wide straps across the middle such as these.....http://www.snaz75.com/pl-sky-302.html. Those kind feel much more like an extension of my leg and I feel they don't slide around at all. I've never had them fly off, although I imagine if you have super narrow feet they wouldn't work. I've always been a bit on the wide side and this style does feel a bit wider than most.

If the shoes I wear don't have ankle straps and chunky heels, I can't walk, dance, whatever in them and this is after 3 years of dancing. I would either try new shoes or maybe try wrapping garters around the shoes and your ankles for more support.

Gotta agree with you. That style is also the one that I find most stable and comfortable.

It might just be the kind of shoes you have. I have no clue what you have... but shoes with a spike heel and no ankle straps are not something I'd wish on any newbie. I actually made the mistake of starting out with closed-toe mary jane platforms. Not smart. Hurt like a bitch and I lost more balance from having my toes crushed up in the shoes.

Do you wear your shoes around the house? If you can walk on plush carpet, hard flooring will be a breeze after a while. I did that when I was new. It also got me used to the feeling of being really tall.

When I wear heels with no platform, it feels like they're an extension of my body. Shoes with a significant platform though, I never feel comfortable. Maybe it's because I can't feel the ground under them as much. ?

I'd suggest that you start out in boots, if you can. With chunky heels. Lots more support...way easier to walk/dance in.

Sorry about taking so long to reply, but....

My shoes are 5 1/2" tall, so they aren't the huge ones. Whenever I bend over while keeping my legs straight, on the way back up I always wobble forward. It's so annoying because I would think that I would be used to it by now, and not do that.

But the odd thing is...I bought some new shoes Satuday; they are 8" tall, and I'm actually balancing way better in them. I don't understand it, but somehow it works! Now I just have to break them in, I wore them that night and they rubbed my feet pretty bad...

I'm going to start wearing them around the house more often, I was doing that a few weeks before I started dancing, but have since quit because I'm too lazy to put them on....

    Thanks for all the sugguestions!

It's so weird that the shorter ones are like that! For me, I think it's because I don't have to step down as far and that somehow helps me...somehow...it's a mystery

You have to learn how to place your weight when your getting up, or doing anything for that matter. It feels funny but you need to try to put more weight on your heels (yes, you'll feel the stretch in your legs). Be super careful that your heel is securely on the floor before you place most of your weight on it because all it takes is a slight angle on a stilleto to go tumbling down.

Try it, it should solve your problem. Once you learn how to place your weight on the back part/sole of your foot and not by the toes, the slant on the front part of the platform shouldn't bother you. Besides trusting the heel, after that you should be golden, HTH.

I've found that I do better in the higher heels than the lower ones as well. The 5-6 inch heels that I've seen tend to have a stiletto that comes to a thinner point than the 7 or 8 inch ones.

Also, it may be the weight and size of the platform - the taller ones (like my happy 8 inch Pleasers) have a wider base and grips on the bottom.

I'm anti-ankle straps though - if my foot slips to the side and I fall in those suckers, I would rather have my foot slide completely out. The straps seem like a damn good way to break your ankle.

snaz75.com has a 5'' chunky section . It will narrow down the choices to only show chunky ones. I haven't purchased from there yet, but love that feature and have heard good things about the site.

What about these clear ones ?

I'm thinking of buying these also. They are open toed. Has anyone had problems with these cutting into your toes ?

Totally! Its not a huge difference between the two but it really, really helps. I can practically sprint in my pair of 8in stilettos that come to around a 1/2" point faaar better than my 5inchers that have a tip the size of a pencil eraser.

Some of the big ones do have that tiny point. I can usually compare a few pics online and spot them, although I've learned which ones are my favorites by now.

My feet took a whole month to get used to the shoes and dancing. Prior to that, I had been dancing 15 years, too.

Now, I've been dancing on and off for baout 6 years...I STILL feel wobbly when I am on stage and not holding the pole. It's so annoying. I don't know any dancers like this...
