You know I've always feared this sort of thing happening.

Make damn sure you've typed that decimal point when you need to. Well unless of course you WANT to prepay the light bill for the next seven years.

I can't believe they didn't give him back his money! When I overpaid my Victoria's Secret bill once, they sent me a check after I didn't use the account for a couple of months (granted, it was $5 instead of 11k, but still...)

2 weeks is PLENTY of time to see if a check clears. I bet that guy wouldn't have gotten his money back if he hadn't called the newspeople. I'm glad he did and it worked out.

Something I've been wondering about online banking:

I transfer money from my main bank to another bank or my credit union via an online transfer. The money vanishes out of my account immediately. At the soonest, it shows up in the other account about a day later. Sometimes it takes four days, and if a weekend or bank holiday is involved, well...

So, after it is out of my main bank, I am no longer earning interest on it. And until it gets to the other account, I don't earn interest on it there either.

So, where is it in the meantime, and who is earning interest on it while it is there?

Not that I am worried on the interest on thirty or a hundred dollars for a day, but if you add up ALL the millions of online transfers in the world and somebody makes a few cents on every one of them, SOMEONE is making a lot of money. Who is it?

That's good he got his money back. That's partly why I'm leery about paying bills online-I tend to make careless errors like writing the wrong amount in my check register. Yeah, it's a little more inconvenient to have to buy stamps and take the time to mail my bills out, but it's worth it to me.

The "new" bank of course! That's how they make money. It's not to "clear" the check because one phone call can verify whether or not the check is valid. I've had it done at the branch, and then it will still get held up even though they verify that the funds are available. They also like to hold large checks for longer periods of time. Now you know why.
