Default What do you think about E-Trade?

I'm considering slowly closing out from AG Edwards and using E Trade from now on.

I don't do risky buys and I invest with the longterm in mind. For example, the companies I am currently invested in are Johnson & Johnson, GE, Campbells and Intel. I'm not actually asking for or using any advice from my AG Edwards guy. I just tell him what to buy for me and when. This is why I am thinking of going to E-Trade for future buys.

    So what do you think?

ps- I'm specifically interested to hear what Katrine has to say on this question.

etrade screwed up a couple of transactions for me, and they were a mess to unravel, but i'm still with them so i guess i don't hate them that much...or i'm just lazy...
These days I like to count my money. I like to wash it delicately and iron it. Sometimes I dry it with some bounty to make it all nice and cuddly. I love my money... did I say that out loud?

Funny you mention AG Edwards and E*Trade... That's exactly the combination I've used since 1997. I keep the bond portion of my portfolio (home state tax-free municipals with laddered maturities) at AG Edwards because my broker there is familiar with my state's bond issues and AG Edwards has a decent market in those. And I like their checking account and on-line access... you get access to all their equity research on-line, including their focus list, core stock list, etc. Don't even have to bother your broker, just download what you want on-line

I keep my stock portfolio with E*Trade, using their research combined with AG Edwards' focus list. Have been with them since 1997 and have never had a problem, great results, they track capital gains, etc. My home mortgage and regular checking account are with E*Trade as well.

I have an E*Trade ATM card, one drawback with E*Trade was the lack of a local office to deposit a paper check (I'm unwilling to mail a deposit). But I can make deposits at AG Edwards, then transfer funds electronically between the E*Trade account and the AG Edwards account. This setup has worked very well for me.

Hope things work well for you!

I never had a problem. You can transfer from a normal bank account also. I made the mistake of telling my parents someone printed a rumor about a possible bankruptcy or bank run on etrade and I had to move the money out of their account.

I've had a little savings acct. w/them for a few months now. I'm just getting ready to make a deposit in there, so I can make a little interest. I got the idea to go there from bankrate.com. I guess I'm not a huge help here.

there has been a lot of unofficial scuttlebut that e-trade is financially strapped - which is confirmed by their very high CD interest rate offerings (i.e. paying a premium in order to attract additional depositor cash).

Other scuttlebut points out that e-trade has 'coincidentally' developed network communications problems on days that the market has taken a nose dive which have prevented account holders from getting 'rapid' execution of stop-loss sell orders (with the conspiracy theory being that e-trade actually sold the stock as soon as the account holder put in the order, but actually only paid the account holder a lower price that occurred 2 hours later).

Ummmm, since I make money off of client's investments, I wouldn't advise them to go somewhere where I can't monitor what they are doing, lol!

That being said, I've recommended the Etrade fdic ins. cash accounts because they have top notch rates. But I warn of the risks due to their financial instability, re: Melonie.
